5 best waterproof cameras in 2018

Camera technology has come a long way since its inception over a century ago. Today, cameras are used by practically everyone in some form, thanks to mobile devices. However, standalone cameras still have prominence in the market due to the fact that they provide better image quality and offer a much better photography experience overall. However, most modern day cameras are feeble and easy to break. The companies understand this fact very well, and have started off something that we know as waterproof cameras. These cameras allow users the freedom to use it in practically any weather condition, without having to worry about a hefty repair cost.

Most of these waterproof cameras come with a durable exterior, making them immune to drops from a significant distance. The general rule, however, is to not drop your precious gadgets, no matter what the manufacturers claim or promise. We’re going to talk about five best waterproof cameras available in the market right now, with the hope that you pick the best one suited for your liking and usage. Some of these are quite expensive, which is understandable given the kind of features they provide. Let’s have a look at some of these products.

Ricoh WG-4

At first glance, the Ricoh WG-4 gives you an impression of a prop from a sci-fi movie thanks to its slender design with blue coloring on the body. It looks like a phone for the most part, thanks to the protective waterproof layering around the edges. However, it’s a lot more than that as it offers users the liberty to capture photos even when it’s raining or even underwater (in some cases). In terms of the hardware underneath, the camera is powered by a 16-megapixel backlit CMOS sensor, which is capable of some very good pictures. The design also makes it drop proof (from up to 6.5 feet), making it an incredibly durable and sturdy camera. It has a built-in GPS, which is helpful in geotagging your pictures and even giving you an idea of the latitudes and other coordinates. It also has a water depth gauge, which can be handy in some situations.

You can take this camera up to 45 feet under water and it will still work like a charm. Thanks to hardware buttons on board, capturing images is a breeze even if you’re underwater. Triple shake reduction technology ensures that your pictures have little to no shaking. As far as rugged cameras are concerned, the Ricoh WG-4 is pretty much up there with the best in the business. This product is hard to come by right now, but you should be able to find it online for just about $350. A newer mode, the WG-5 is also worth checking out.

Olympus TG-4

This camera has “Tough” written on the front panel, so there’s no ambiguity about what it brings to the table. Olympus is a well known camera manufacturer and is not new to waterproof cameras. The TG-4 offers a 16-megapixel sensor accompanied by a f/2.0 lens for quick photos. There’s a 3-inch digital viewfinder and it lacks a conventional viewfinder, which is a letdown for traditional camera enthusiasts. Given that it’s waterproof, the company offers a dedicated underwater mode for amazing pictures in the pool or shallow waters. It can sustain water pressure up to 50 feet, so you’re free to take this to the oceans as well. A camera of this caliber is ideally suited for surfing photography as it can bear pressures of the sea as well.

Further, the camera is “crushproof” up to 220lbs, which is a unique feature to have in a handheld digital camera. Much like the camera we talked about above, this one too comes with GPS as well as a dedicated compass. Wi-Fi connectivity means you can wirelessly transfer your photos and videos onto a computer. This is a favorite among the fans as well, and we highly recommend you to have a closer look at this offering. It can be bought via Amazon for just under $500.

Nikon COOLPIX S33

This looks like a conventional digital camera but is a lot more than that. It is waterproof up to 33 feet, and shockproof up to 5 feet. These credentials mean that you can use the camera only in shallow waters and probably not in deeper oceans. While the materials used in its making doesn’t inspire a lot of confidence, it is pretty sturdy and rugged for most use cases. It comes with a 13.2-megapixel CMOS sensor, which should take pretty decent photos both on land and underwater. It is capable of recording videos at 1080p, which is a prerequisite among modern day digital cameras.

The buttons used in this camera are large, making them easy to access. There’s a large display as well, which will act as a viewfinder for your photos and videos. There’s no manual viewfinder here, however. The Nikon Coolpix S33 will cost you $178.99 and can be snatched up from Amazon right away.

Olympus TG-870

Olympus is no stranger to cameras and the company has been somewhat a pioneer in terms of handheld digital cameras. Much like its other waterproof camera mentioned on this list, this one belongs to the “Tough” series, offering unmatched durability and water resistance. It is water-resistant up to 50 feet, shock proof up to 7 feet and crush proof up to 220 lbs. It is also freeze proof up to -10 degrees C. It is excellent for underwater macro shots which is aided by the built-in “Super Macro Mode”. It also comes with 13 art filters within, allowing you to modify your images to a great extent. Given the kind of features it offers, we feel the Olympus TG-870 is an excellent offering to own, and it will only set you back by $500, which is the same price as the other Olympus offering on this list.

Samsung Galaxy S8

This is an unconventional choice, but a valid one. The Galaxy S8 is Samsung’s popular flagship from earlier this year. Its camera is highly rated for its performance and the fact that it also comes with a handful of other features on board is a bonus. If you’re in the market for a smartphone and also a decent camera, why not get both in one package? Well, the Galaxy S8 boasts of a large 5.8-inch Super AMOLED Quad HD display, the octa-core Snapdragon 835 SoC, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of expandable storage, Android 7.0 Nougat, and a 3,000 mAh battery. It is equipped with a 12-megapixel f/1.7 camera lens on the back, which is capable of some amazing pictures and videos. The front comes with an 8-megapixel wide angle f/1.7 lens for selfies. Software features like dual video call make it a very attractive smartphone, and an even better camera. You can get the unlocked model of the handset on Amazon for $675.
