What to do if Galaxy J7 won’t connect to a wifi network

Problem #1: What to do if Galaxy J7 won’t connect to a wifi network

My name is Isaac. I am from the US but am currently in Germany traveling. While traveling I have no signal and rely on WIFI for my phone. I got to the house I will be at for a week last night and the owner went to connect my girlfriend’s phone (iPhone) to the wifi and it worked right away. When we attempted to set my phone (Samsung J7) up with the wifi, the wifi network didn’t even show up on my phone. I could only see the neighbors wifi. The wifi in question is currently visible and working on both my girlfriend’s phone and the computer I am using, but still my J7 only every so often shows the neighbors wifi. I have attempted a soft reboot but with no change. I have cleared the Cache and I made 5 GB space available but nothing seems to fix it. I am at a loss of what to do short of a full factory reset which, at the moment, with no way to back anything up on my phone, would cause me to lose all my apps, pictures, and other documents. I do not know if this is related, but my phone is susceptible to resetting if its jolted at all and a lot of times it will state that certain system programs aren’t responding before asking me to close out apps when they are not even open in the first place. Also, pertaining to the Android Version Oreo, I am unsure if that is correct.

Solution: If your Galaxy J7 can connect to other wifi networks without problems at all, then there’s probably a temporary bug that causes the situation right now, or the current wifi network is configured differently so it blocks your device. Try to clear your J7’s network settings and see what happens. In many cases, this is enough to fix network troubles. Follow the steps below to clear your phone’s network settings:

  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Tap General management.
  3. Tap Reset.
  4. Tap Reset Network settings.
  5. Tap RESET SETTINGS button to confirm.
  6. Restart your S9 and check for the problem.

If a network settings reset won’t fix the problem, work with the wifi administrator to isolate the factors. The network may be set to block your device for some reason. The least that needs to be done here is to check the router settings so you’ll have to tell the owner of the wifi network about the issue and the troubleshooting you’ve tried so far.

We don’t think a factory reset will help in this situation but if the owner is absolutely positive that your device is not blocked in any way, you might as well try it.

Problem #2: How to fix a Galaxy J7 that keeps restarting and overheating

Hello Experts of Android world! This is my first post, apologies if I missed out any courtesy!  

Background: Phone was purchased through ATT US, through contract. Contract is now over. Based in New York. Phone is beautiful physical condition.   

 

  • J7 keeps restarting itself and ends up heating it up too much.
  • I booted in safe mode. Uninstalled dozens of apps, ran anti virus scan, no issue found. Freed up memory, about 5.3 GB free on phone.
  • Removed sim card and memory card. Backed up data using samsung smart switch to my PC. Phone did not reboot for quite some time. Felt like it was resolved, and phone did not heat up. But again, after few hours,it started booting itself in loop.
  • I cleared/wiped off cache from boot loader menu.
  • It fails to boot using boot loader, and I see error, “command not found.”
  • I finally formatted phone from boot menu, I did the factory reset. Phone boots from scratch, and by the time I try to put my google account info in there, it is again in boot loop. It keeps doing this.

 

Is there any emergency software that I can install through PC (Smart Switch)? How will I do it phone keeps rebooting itself? Appreciate your help! King.

Solution: If the random or sudden reboot issue persisted after wiping the phone and returning all software information to defaults via factory reset, the cause is most likely hardware-related. A situation like this can be tricky to diagnose without knowing the full history of the device and without a thorough hardware check. Smartphones work because of a complicated series of processes, both in software and hardware aspects, that even a tiny misstep can bring the whole system down. In many cases though, some of the common hardware failures that lead to random reboot issue includes a bad battery or a malfunctioning Power Management IC. Checking the latter is not easy and can only be done using a specialized kit so the only thing that you can do is to check the battery. If you’re lucky and the issue lies there, replacing the current one may be an easy fix. If possible, try to borrow another known working Galaxy J7 battery and use it for a few hours. If your phone won’t restart randomly during that period, go ahead and buy a new battery. Otherwise, you really have no choice but to contact Samsung so they can run hardware tests and advise you on what needs to be done next.

For your question, the answer is NO. There’s no emergency software that you can install from Smart Switch other than the factory OS version, which you won’t be able to do if your phone is unstable.

Problem #3: Galaxy J7 won’t charge or charges very slow after Gear VR screen keeps popping out

It started when i plugged in my charger into my phone which was not showing that it was charging. It started to flash in white and black and the Gear VR popped up and had a button saying start. I clicked my home button to exit from it, but it the glitch kept happening and i clicked start after it kept resuming. They gave a list of apps thats going to be downloaded and installed including Oculus. While it was downloading my phone began to charge but very slowly, when the app was installed my phone stopped charging and every time i tried putting in my charger but it was not charging still it was only doing the glitch. When the phone is switched off it will begin to charge and then stop after a while, but only when its off. I tried everything, i tried blowing into the charging port, i tried switching my chargers, resetting and wiping my phone in every way and i carried it by a phone repair shop and they said everything was great with my charging port on my phone. I tried everything already. I really hope this has a solution to it. I goggled it but found no answers.

Solution: We’ve seen this issue on previous iterations of Samsung Galaxy devices a few years back. Back then, the only solution that seemed to have work effectively was to uninstall or disable, whichever the option for each app would be. If you haven’t tried that yet, we suggest that you do so. Start by disabling or uninstalling any Gear VR or Oculus apps from the system. One of these apps is apparently causing a bug that interferes with Android and the firmware for the charging port.

If nothing will change after deleting apps, you can also try to factory reset the phone and make sure not to install any Oculus apps, especially if you’re not using any VR equipment. To factory reset your J7:

  1. Create a backup of your important files.
  2. Turn off the device. This is important. If you can’t turn it off, you’ll never be able to boot to Recovery Mode. If you are not able to shut the device off regularly via the Power button, wait until the phone’s battery is drained. Then, charge the phone for 30 minutes before booting to Recovery Mode.
  3. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  4. When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  5. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
  6. Press Power button to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  8. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  9. When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  10. Press the Power key to restart the device.
