How to fix Huawei P9 screen flickering issue (screen dims automatically)

Problem #1: How to fix Huawei P9 screen flickering issue (screen dims automatically)

Hey. i have tried all the above techniques to try to fix my screen on my Huawei P9 but it hasn’t helped. i thought it would help you if you knew how the flickering happens.

when i press the power button, the screen flashes red before the screen ‘turns off’. when i say turn off that is not what happens. the screen is still usable but it is really dim to the point that it looks off. you can barely see the interface when a light is shone on it e.g. sunlight. if you touch the screen it will respond to your touches e.g. pressing the play button on YouTube will play the video even though the screen is really dim – practically off. Then when the power button is pressed again the screen is turned off. i then repeatedly press the power button until eventually the screen is permanently turned on. if the screen stays on, it is only a matter of time before the screen turns off again, while the phone is in use. is there any advice on what the problem is and what i could do to fix this problem. thanks in advance.

Solution: We don’t the full history of your Huawei device to say accurately that its LCD or monitor may be broken but it should sure looks that way for us. The screen assembly has three major components — LCD, digitizer, and flex cable. The LCD is the part that displays the images you see while the digitizer is a thin transparent sensor that transforms your touches into digital signals. These signals are then transmitted to the logic board thru the flex cable for processing. Both digitizer and flex cable are apparently working since your inputs (touches) are still recognized by the phone. It’s the LCD or monitor that appears to be the problem as it glitches randomly and for no apparent reason.

Turn off auto brightness

We’ve seen a similar scenario in some Samsung Galaxy devices in the past and some were attributed to auto brightness feature. To see if your Huawei P9 has the same issue, try to turn off auto brightness and observe the device. Make sure to put screen brightness to maximum.

Check for bad third party apps

Sometimes, a third party app may interfere with Android and cause problems. To check if one of the apps is preventing the screen from working properly, restart the phone to safe mode. In this mode, all third party apps will be suspended, only permitting pre-installed ones to run. If the screen works normally in safe mode but becomes problematic when you return to regular mode, you can bet you have  a third party issue at hand.

To boot your P9 to safe mode:

  1. Turn off your Huawei P9.
  2. Press and hold the Power key.
  3. Once the Huawei P9 screen appears, release the Power key and immediately press and hold the Volume Down button.
  4. If successful, you can see ‘Safe mode’ in the lower-left corner of the screen.

While the device is in this mode, observe closely to know if the screen still flickers and if the problem is fixed, then our suspicion that one or some of the third-party apps causes the problem is confirmed. Try to find the apps that might be causing the problem and then uninstall them one by one until the problem is fixed. To identify which of your apps is causing the trouble, you should boot the phone back to safe mode and follow these steps:

  1. Boot to safe mode.
  2. Check for the problem.
  3. Once you’ve confirmed that a third party app is to blame, you can start uninstalling apps individually. We suggest that you begin with the most recent ones you added.
  4. After you uninstall an app, restart the phone to normal mode and check for the problem.
  5. If your Huawei P9 is still problematic, repeat steps 1-4.

Factory reset

If the issue goes away with auto brightness off, you can then try a factory reset to see if it’s an operating system bug. Here’s how to do that:

  1. Turn off your Huawei P9.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up and the Power keys together.
  3. When the Huawei logo appears, keep holding both keys until the screen turns black.
  4. The screen may turn black for a second or two and you may release the keys at this point.
  5. When you can see EMUI on the screen, it means you’ve reached your phone’s recovery system.
  6. Now, using the Volume Down button, highlight the option “Wipe data/factory reset” and then hit the power key to select it.
  7. You will be brought to another screen that prompts “Confirm wipe off all user data?”
  8. Highlight the option “Wipe data/factory reset” once again and then hit the Power key to select.
  9. It may take a several seconds to complete the reset so wait for it until it’s done. You can actually see the progress on the screen.
  10. Once the reset is completed, you will be brought back to EMUI screen.
  11. Hit the Volume Up button to highlight “Reboot system now” option and then press the Power key to reboot your phone.
  12. It may take for the phone to boot up a little longer but wait for it.

Get professional support

If all the suggestions above won’t help, the best course of action for you is to get Huawei’s help. If the phone was provided by your carrier as part of your subscription package, try asking help from them first. They’ll most likely give you a replacement if you qualify. Otherwise, go through the warranty route with Huawei.

Problem #2: Huawei P9 Lite won’t unlock after factory reset (Factory Reset Protection lock)

I factory reset my Huawei P9 Lite recently because I was selling it to someone else. She brought the phone back to me saying that it’s stuck at the point where it asks for you to enter your Gmail address and password. I tried several times but it keeps saying that must wait for 24 hours before trying again. I’ve also read up a bit on this and they say that the phone must be off for 72 hours. Then must try again. I would really appreciate your help with this. Just hope that the phone isn’t damaged.

Solution: All Android devices running Android Lollipop (5.0) and above are protected by a feature called FRP or Factory Reset Protection. FRP prevents someone, like a thief, from doing a factory reset and using the device afterwards. With FRP, your phone will be locked after a factory reset unless you can provide the correct Google username and password. So, in this situation, the only way for you unlock the device and make it available for sale is enter the Google account and password you used in your device previously. If you can’t do that, then the phone remains locked.

Problem #3: How to fix Huawei P9 black screen issue (won’t turn on)

Hi! My Huawei P9 (Model EVA-L09) was working fine this morning and two hours later, after being in my pocket with nothing else, whilst I was just sitting, the screen suddenly doesn’t work anymore. It doesn’t react to any kind of touch and the colors change all the time, everything turns negative, the logo appears in the background. When I restart it (by soft reset), it sometimes starts in black and white and then several screens can be seen at once (the logo + where I have to put my pin + sometimes the normal background with my apps) and the screen gets a magenta/green or light blue coloring, the brightness turns down and it somehow automatically fills in a lot of numbers for my pin without me doing anything. The on/off button works fine and it also kind of reacts to the finger(print) sensor at te back of the phone.  Around half a year ago I dropped my phone, the screen shattered and I had it replaced, but since then it worked perfectly well. Any tips on how to deal with this or what might be the cause of it? (I’m not sure if the Android Version I selected is the correct one).

Solution: Looks to me you have a bad screen issue. Try to boot the phone to safe mode to see if that will make a difference. This should help you check if there’s a third party app behind the trouble.

If nothing changes, try to boot to Recovery Mode to see if there’s an operating system issue. Recovery Mode is a separate software environment and does not require Android to work. If the cause of the screen issue is Android-related, it should work normally in Recovery Mode. Here are the steps on how to boot to Recovery Mode:

  1. Turn off your Huawei P9.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up and the Power keys together.
  3. When the Huawei logo appears, keep holding both keys until the screen turns black.
  4. The screen may turn black for a second or two and you may release the keys at this point.
  5. When you can see EMUI on the screen, it means you’ve reached your phone’s recovery system.

If the screen works on Recovery (does not dim, no discoloration, etc.), that means you got a software issue on your hand. To fix it, try doing a factory reset thru Recovery Mode.

If nothing works and the screen is still not functional in Recovery, stop looking for software solutions. Instead, let a professional check the hardware for you.
