How to fix Galaxy Note8 freezing issue: constantly reboots when connected to wifi

Hello Galaxy Note8 (#GalaxyNote8) owners! Welcome to today’s Note8 troubleshooting episode. We’ve had some few cases lately about this device acting up under certain circumstances. We don’t think that the cases mentioned below are true for all Note8s around the world but since quite a number of users have expressed their dissatisfaction, this post is for them.

Problem #1: How to fix Galaxy Note8 mobile data issue: no signal and keeps saying emergency calls only

Hi Mr Administrator theDroidguy . I had an issue which need your expertise in solving my android case..Before this problem arises, i can neither receive nor make a call out, but never had internet access. Never register for internet for this (samsung galaxy note 8) phone. (Previously i use to call an operator of lycamobile company and receive a guide tro phone to type LYCAMOBILE in Name column and LYCAMOBILE.COM.AU in APN column – for my friend’s phone.. it works). Today after I top-up my lycamobile prepaid (Australia) and wanted to use internet, so i start searching for the same column (as i did for my friend’s phone) to fill in, but in vain. Then i call an operator where she said that the message will be sent which will help me out. 2 messages – Your phone setting is being sent. If prompted accept it. If the phone ask for a password enter 4694. after 2 minutes another message pop in..Your phone setting is being sent. If prompted accept it. If the phone ask for a password enter 9433. I didn’t know where to start from since i could not understand the messages received. Then i mistakenly found VPN and tap it.. the pop-up order was to create a password at which i did and reconfirmed it..! From that time on i could not access internet and can’t even dial out.. Now everytime i wanted to use my phone i have to key-in the PIN which i had created at the VPN area, and below the screen was a NO SERVICE – Emergency call notice. There is also a circle and a ? sign at the signal place (bar sign area). Your help is greatly appreciated. Much obliged. I had tried the 1st 3 suggestion but still not working. For the 3rd suggestion it seems that the phone was unable to find even one operator.

Solution: In order for cellular data or internet to work, your subscription account must be properly provisioned by your network operator first. Part of the entire provisioning process of most networks is to send a confirmation message to the SIM card so the user can then activate the service using a one-time PIN. This PIN is solely for activating your cellular service and not for VPN. VPN is a different method of allowing your device to connect to the internet. You don’t need to use a VPN to activate your mobile data subscription. We suggest that you turn it VPN off or remove the one you’ve recently added. This must be the reason why the phone has no signal from your carrier. A VPN forces your device to use a third party network instead to get internet connection. It bypasses your own carrier’s network causing an appearance that there’s no signal at all.

Once you’ve removed the VPN or disabled it, talk to your network operator again and ask them for the specific steps on how to activate your SIM so you can use their mobile data. Each carrier has its own particular set of steps but one important thing to configure is the APN. By design, most phones are set to automatically change the APN once a SIM card is inserted so you can also try to re-insert the SIM first. If that won’t automatically set the correct APN settings, get further support from your carrier.

Problem #2: How to fix Galaxy Note8 freezing issue: constantly reboots when connected to wifi

The screen froze yesterday. Following your other instructions on other posts, I’ve tried the “soft reset”, clearing device & app cache, loading device in Safe Mode, cleaning out USB port with canned air, entering Developer Mode to check USB settings (debug setting, mode setting). The exact problems that all began at once are as follow:

  1. a) Phone screen freezes or reboots constantly, within 5 minutes of being turned on (occasionally freezing while loading the “Samsung” image. (Soft reset works–turning off with down button + power restarts it.)
  2. b) Phone works properly when *wifi is turned ON* and connected to my home network. It can stay on for over an hour without freezing.
  3. c) The phone will charge via USB cable, but it is impossible to get the device to connect to computers through the same cable (thus, impossible to do file transfers or make a backup). There is no error message; the device simply does not show up like it used to on the same devices (I tried multiple cables). I’ve checked and my device is up-to-date; it appears that no apps were updated on my phone the day this happened. Any ideas?

Solution: We can see that you did not follow all our suggestions particularly a factory reset. We suggest that you do that to see if the problem is caused by a software bug.

Before you wipe the phone, you can try to see what happens after you reset the network settings and all settings. Here’s how to do them:

  1. From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
  2. Tap General Management > Reset settings.
  3. Tap Reset Network Settings.
  4. If you have set up a PIN, enter it.
  5. Tap Reset settings. Once complete a confirmation window will appear.

Factory reset

Should nothing change after wiping the settings, you should consider doing a factory reset. Try to see if you can upload your important data to the cloud via wifi or mobile data first. If you can’t create a backup by uploading, try using an SD card instead. Once you’ve copied your backup, do the steps below to factory reset your Note8:

  1. Create a backup of your data.
  2. Turn off the device.
  3. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  4. When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  5. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
  6. Press Power button to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  8. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  9. When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  10. Press the Power key to restart the device.

Problem #3: What to do if your Note8 started acting up after accidental drop

About two months back my phone had fallen from bed. The phone was operating normally afterwards but it used to get a little hot. I took the phone to the service center they said this is not an issue as phone tends to get warmer. But I insisted that before drop the phone didn’t get this warm. They told to replace the powerboard which is roughly half the cost of phone but this heating issue wont affect my phone performance and I can adjust to it. Fast forwarding to 2 weeks back we had a lot of humidity in air as rainy season has started. The phone crashed twice in a day and restarted. I did a complete backup and did factory reset.

After this the phone was operating normally but with heating around the camera region and battery drained faster, it lasted around 12 hours where previously it used to give me around 20 hours on near full charge. Last week, suddenly upon using phone with 40% battery left and opening facebook it got stuck and wont switch off by pressing power button. It restarted after about 5 minutes and was operating normally. Half an hour later the screen went completely black. No combination of key presses will switch on the phone.

I again took the phone to service center and they said the processor was not receiving power and that powerboard and battery needs to be changed which costs around current cost of the phone. I took the device home and left it for 2 days.

On third day I tried to switch it on by pressing volume down+power+home the screen came to life and showed custom software update mode. I pressed cancel and phone restarted but screen remained black which was due to completely drained battery. 2 hours later I plugged the phone in and it started taking charge. When it was 7% I unplugged and switched it on to take backup of my contacts. The phone lasted 40 secs before powering down to 0%.

After this I have tried a few times to switch on the phone, sometimes it boots up and sometimes it doesn’t. Sometimes it doesn’t accept charging cable and gets stuck on battery box with lightning sign and wont go to next percentage with circle animation. When it does boot up it randomly freezes or restarts. I read that Orea latest update has a malfunctioning Gear VR Services and it uses lot of processing power. I tried to disable it but as soon as I reached apps setting the phone froze and switched off. I will try again. Kindly advise what should be my next steps. Can it be because of the humidity or is my battery acting up?

Solution: As an end user, there’s only so much that you can do when it comes to troubleshooting your Android. We understand that you don’t want to go into repair but we’re afraid this is the best course of action for you. At most, factory reset is the ultimate troubleshooting for you. If the problem/s persist after that, you can assume that there must be a hardware malfunction somewhere. To know, a technician needs to check the phone physically and run diagnostics on it. Because the problem started after the phone was accidentally dropped, bad hardware is most likely behind it. We are not in a position to tell you what the particular trouble is so we suggest that you let Samsung or an independent service shop examine the device. The problem can possibly be beyond a simple battery issue and may involve other components. If you want a permanent resolution, be sure to let a professional take a look at your Note8.
