How to fix Galaxy Note8 charging issue: won’t charge to 100%

Hello Android owners! Our troubleshooting article for today talks about issues and solutions for the #GalaxyNote8. Despite the release of the new Note9, the older Galaxy Note8 is still a formidable combination of hardware and software. Unfortunately for some users, issues like the ones we discuss below occurs. Problem #1: New Galaxy Note8 is in Spanish and won’t allow initial setup

I have a Samsung Note 8 phone. i believed it was entirely new, until i turned it on. the phone is all in Spanish and i understand nothing. The keyboard has no way to control it nor does the language, some features and key elements, it is not allowing me to connect any google account to it and i am unable to download anything from the play store, no matter how hard i try. I currently have no SIM card on this phone nor a number connected to it. Any ideas or suggestions how to fix it?

Also, my dad, who bought me the phone, warned me not to format it or reset it to factory’s setting. I have no idea why, but he is travelling and far away from me currently , so i cannot question him about that .Please help me for i am not using or benfiting from the phone , i rarely charge it because of that .Thank you for your hard work,help and dedication.

Solution: In order to use a new phone, you should set it up first. The initial setup is a no-brainer and you should be able to manage it. If the phone is in Spanish and you don’t speak it, then you should return it to the seller. There’s no way to bypass the setup screens at all.

Samsung devices have a feature called Factory Reset Protection or FRP to prevent unauthorized access. FRP is meant to prevent someone from using the phone after a factory reset. Unless you can provide the registered Google account and password stored within the device, you won’t be able to use it at all.

If you or your dad still has the proof of purchase (receipt), try to bring the device to Samsung so they can bypass FRP or replace the phone.

Problem #2: How to fix Galaxy Note8 charging issue: won’t charge to 100%

My Samsung Note8 is charging to 100% but after disconnecting the charger and switching the mobile on, it goes off after a few minutes. when reconnecting to the charger it shows only 16% charge. Every time it’s the same. I only can use my mobile while connected to the charger. I already tried some tips like removing all background apps and also tried charging on safe mode, but the issue remain the same.

Solution: Try to recalibrate the battery to see what happens. Android may not be getting accurate reading levels of the battery causing it to turn the system off prematurely. Follow the steps below to recalibrate it and the battery.

  1. Drain the battery completely. This means using your device until it powers down by its own and the battery level reads 0%.
  2. Charge the phone until it reaches 100%. Be sure to use original charging equipment for your device and let it charge up completely. Do not unplug your device for at least two more hours and also don’t use it while charging.
  3. After the elapsed time, unplug your device.
  4. Restart the device.
  5. Use your phone until it completely runs out of power again.
  6. Repeat steps 1-5.

Factory reset

The next thing to do if battery calibration won’t work is factory reset. This will help you see if the issue is due to a software glitch or not.

To factory reset your Note8:

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  4. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
  5. Press Power button to select.
  6. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  7. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  8. When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  9. Press the Power key to restart the device.
  10. Let the phone run for 24 hours without adding any apps.

Hardware malfunction

Should nothing work after wiping the phone with factory reset, you can assume that the issue is not fixable on your level. Send the phone in so Samsung can examine it.

Problem #3: Galaxy Note8 keeps saying moisture detected error

I have an Note8. A couple of days ago it was raining pretty hard. my phone didn’t get wet but I assumed the humidity caused by the moisture in the charging port alert. It now will not stop alerting me. I have taken it to best buy and geek squad says it has no water damage and was completely fine. We have factory reset the phone and it still pops up.

Solution: If possible, try to bring the device to your Samsung Service Center so they can dry the charging port properly. There may be some residue in the port that needs cleaning. If you can’t do that, let an independent technician do it for you. Keep in mind that third party repair may void the Samsung warranty so even if you’ll let Samsung check the device later on, they’ll refuse your request.

Problem #4: How to fix Galaxy Note Contacts app issue: Search results showing irrelevant information

Hi. I am having some issue on my Note 8. When I search for some contacts in the phone for example “TOM” the contacts shows all irrelevant data, like it shows even contacts like “Customer” rather than showing only the one I am searching for.. Is there a way to set it right. I am not sure if this is a standard feature but with my previous phone I never had issue like this. Request you to let me know if I have done some wrong settings. 

Solution: Your Contacts app’s cache may be buggy. Try clearing the app’s cache first and see what happens. Here’s how:

  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Tap Apps.
  3. Tap on More settings at the upper right (three-dot icon).
  4. Select Show system apps.
  5. Find and tap your app.
  6. Tap Storage.
  7. Tap Clear Cache button.
  8. Restart your Note8 and check for the problem.

If the problem returns after clearing the cache, back your contacts up, then clear the app’s data. If you have a computer or another device, you can try to use Samsung Smart Switch app to create a backup. Alternatively, you can also use Samsung’s own cloud service to backup your contacts. Just go to Settings > Cloud and accounts > Backup and restore > Back up data. Since we’re only dealing with contacts here, just select Contacts among the list, go back to the previous menu, and ensure that Back up my data is enabled.

Once your contacts have been copied to the cloud or to your PC, you can then clear the Contact app’s data. Here’s how:

  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Tap Apps.
  3. Tap on More settings at the upper right (three-dot icon).
  4. Select Show system apps.
  5. Find and tap your app.
  6. Tap Storage.
  7. Tap Clear Data button.
  8. Restart your Note8 and check for the problem.
