Why does Camera keeps closing on Samsung Galaxy Note 8 and how do I fix it?

How to fix Galaxy Note 8 with its Camera that keeps crashing


We have addressed similar problems in the past and we know from experience that this problem could pretty minor or very complicated depending on whether the hardware is affected or not. If it’s just a problem with the app, then you can fix it on your own without any help from a tech but if it’s a problem with the sensor, then it might need to be replaced. Now, here’s what you should do about this…

First solution: Restart your Note 8

A reboot might be all you need to get this problem sorted out especially if this is the first time that the problem occurred. Let’s try to rule out the possibility that it’s just a result of a minor glitch so restart your phone and see if the camera works after that. You may also try doing the Forced Reboot which is far more effective than the normal restart.

Press and hold the volume down and power keys at the same time for 10 seconds or more. Your phone will restart normally but its memory will be refreshed and all apps and services reloaded. If the camera still closes on its own after doing this, then move on to the next solution.

Second solution: Clear the cache and data of Camera

We will now try to see if this is just a problem with the application. By clearing the camera’s cache and data, you’re resetting it back to its default settings and configuration as well as replacing the files that are deleted. If this is indeed just a problem with the app, then this procedure is more than enough to fix the problem.

  1. From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
  2. Tap Settings > Apps.
  3. Find and tap Camera.
  4. Tap Storage.
  5. Tap Clear cache.
  6. Tap Clear data and then tap OK.

If it still crashes after doing this, then you can expect that the problem is more serious than we thought.

Third solution: Find out if it’s caused by third party apps

You need to run your phone in safe mode to temporarily disable all third-party apps and services. If the camera doesn’t crash while the phone is in this mode, then it means there’s a third party that’s causing this problem. Find that app and uninstall it. Here’s how you reboot your phone in safe mode:

  1. Turn the device off.
  2. Press and hold the Power key past the model name screen.
  3. When “SAMSUNG” appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  4. Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  5. Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  6. Safe mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.
  7. Release the Volume down key when you see Safe Mode.

However, if the problem continues even in safe mode, then try the next procedure to rule out the possibility that it’s just a firmware problem.

Fourth solution: Backup important files and reset phone

At this point, a reset is necessary and this will conclude your troubleshooting. If the problem continues after this, then you have to bring the phone to the service center. The firmware may need to be reflashed or it could be a hardware problem.

Before the reset, however, make sure to backup all your important files and data as they will be deleted. After the backup, follow these steps to reset your phone:

  1. Back up data on the internal memory. If you have signed into a Google account on the device, you have activated Anti-theft and will need your Google credentials to finish the Master reset.
  2. Turn off the device.
  3. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  4. When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  5. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight “wipe data / factory reset.
  6. Press Power button to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  8. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  9. When the master reset is complete, “Reboot system now” is highlighted.
  10. Press the Power key to restart the device.
