Solved Samsung Galaxy S9 Unsupported SD Card Error

This model is one of the two flagship phones released by the South Korean company this year that uses some of the latest hardware components. Although this is a solid performing  phone there are instances when certain issues can occur which we will be addressing today. In this latest installment of our troubleshooting series we will tackle the Galaxy S9 unsupported SD card error issue and other related problems.

S9 Unsupported SD Card Error

Problem: My device has been showing a “Unsupported SD Card” message in my notifications for about a month.  My device was running flawless up until this occurred. quickly, I am not sure about the android version I am running.  The device is an Android Galaxy S9 and I had it pre ordered. Maybe that information will keep us both on the right track if you guys send the troubleshooting information back to me.  Basically, device running fine, I started receiving these messages in the notifications drop down. When I tap on the message I was hoping it would take me to a setting that could possibly be set incorrectly, or maybe an advanced setting that I could just troubleshoot myself.  Unfortunately, tapping on the message does nothing.

I have tried the following…

Restart

Power off/back on after 10 sec.

Removing the SD card with the device powered down, reinserting and powered up.

Plugging into a pc to see if SD card is visible (which since this message started showing, it is not)

The last couple of weeks,  the message does not appear any longer, yet I still do not have a mounted SD card.

Before I use useless apps to check my SD card,  I was hoping to get some feedback from you guys.  If you could please respond, possibly send me some type of sequence of troubleshooting I could try before having to take it to the T Mobile store (which from my experience is a waste of time).  Please let me know.

Solution: The best thing that you can do right now is to try using a different microSD card in your phone. This way you can check if it is  the phone that’s causing the problem or the card itself.If the issue does not occur with a new card installed then the old card might be faulty. In case the issue still persists even with the new card then you should backup your phone data then do a factory reset. Once the reset is complete do not install any apps in your phone yet. Try to check first if the issue still occurs. If it does then this might already be a hardware related problem in which case you will need to bring the phone to a service center and have it checked.

S9 Not Reading microSD Card

Problem: Hi.  I believe my new Galaxy S9 phone has either a bad memory card reader or a software issue that is preventing 32 gig Micro SD cards from being recognized. I have tried 3 different cards. However, these same cards do work in my Daughter’s  phone. Additionally, her own card that works in her phone will not work in my S9. Lastly, I even took my new phone to a local Verizon store to see if they could figure out the problem. They also could not get any of the cards to work in my new phone.

I am on PagePlus Pre-paid Service which uses Verizon’s towers so I had to get this phone.

Here’s are the steps I took:

  1. I tried my current 32 gig Micro SD Memory Card that I use in my former phone (Galaxy S7). It is not recognized by the new phone I received from you.
  2. I tried a brand new 32 gig Micro SD Memory Card in the new phone I received form you. It does not recognize the card.
  3. My daughter has a Galaxy  phone, so I tried my daughter’s 32 gig Micro SD Memory SD Card that she uses in her  phone and that will not show up in my new phone either.
  4. I took the cards in steps  #1 and #2 above and placed them in my daughter’s  phone and the both ARE Recognized by her phone. They work fine.
  5. I drove to a Verizon Dealer, located at BJs Warehouse in Derby, CT.  I spoke with a tech. He tried both my Micro SD card that I was using in my old  phone and the new Micro SD card I just bought. He verified that neither card will show up (recognize) in my New  phone.
  6. He took both cards mentioned in #5, #2 and #1 above, and he WAS ABLE to get them to work in his Galaxy S7 phone.

Do you have any suggestions that might be helpful to me?

Solution: It’s very likely that the problem is already caused by a faulty phone microSD card reader. The beat thing you can do right now is to bring the phone to a service center and have this repaired.

S9 Photos Missing From microSD Card

Problem: Hi Guys! Basically I have an S9. So my problem is that I tried to move about 150 pictures from internal storage to the SD card’s camera library. I noticed today that my phone saves my photos to its internal memory since 3 weeks. I said “no problem”, I’m gonna move them. So I moved the pictures from the internal memory to the SD card without any problem. My phone counted the pictures that are moved to the SD. After all of the pictures “were” on the memory card my phone wrote that “Pictures are unable to move”. I opened the Camera Roll but instead of my pictures I saw grey shortcuts with white exclamation mark. I put my SD card into my PC but I couldn’t find the pictures. I put back the card into my phone and neither the grey shortcuts nor the original pictures were there. They just simply disappeared. I don’t know what to do but I would be really messed up if I would lose these pictures. If you can help me please let me know what to do!

Solution: If your phone gallery app can’t detect the photos then it’s either something went wrong during the transfer process or the microSD card has corrupt sectors which is why you are now unable to view the photos. You can try to use a file recovery program such as Recuva to recover the photos in the microSD card using your computer. Take note though that there’s little chance of recovering these photos if it has been corrupted already.

To prevent this issue from happening again I suggest that you set the camera to save photos automatically to the microSD card. You should also get a new microSD card as the one you have right now might be faulty.
