How to fix Samsung Galaxy S9 that won’t turn on shortly after a minor firmware update (easy steps)

Since Samsung Galaxy S9 was released with Android 8.0 Oreo already installed, all new updates are minor ones except if it’s Android 9 Pie. Google has yet to make public Android P so all the updates you’ve received are either security patches or updates that bring minor improvements to the device’s performance.

Regardless whether the update is minor or a big one, it should fix some problems and not bring more. Some of our readers who contacted us, however, said that their devices would no longer turn on shortly after installing an update. Because of that, we are obliged to address this problem for the benefit of users who are bugged by this issue.

In this post, I will walk you through in troubleshooting your Galaxy S9 that would no longer respond after an update. I will share with you the solution we’ve already been using to address issues like this. Continue reading as this post may be able to help you one way or another.

How to troubleshoot Galaxy S9 that won’t turn on after an update

First of all, if this kind of problem started after your phone was dropped or hit by a hard object that left a noticeable scratch or dent, then you should consider the possibility that it could be a physical damage. In such case, it would be useless to troubleshoot your phone so the best thing to do is bring it to the shop so that the technician can examine it for you. The same thing goes if your phone was submerged in water for a long time. I understand the phone is water-resistant but there’s a limit to that and it’s still very much possible that your phone is suffering from liquid damage. But regardless whether your phone has some signs of physical and/or liquid damage or not, if you want to troubleshoot it, then here’s what you should do…

First solution: Perform the Forced Reboot

Assuming there are no signs of physical and/or liquid damage, then this problem is all firmware. It may seem like a very serious issue but in reality, it’s a minor problem you can fix on your own without any help from a tech. The first thing you should do is Forced Reboot.

  • Press both the volume down and power keys at the same time and hold them down together for 10 seconds or more.

Your Galaxy S9 may boot up after doing this and if so, then the problem is fixed for now but there’s no guarantee it won’t happen again. However, if the phone still doesn’t turn on after doing the aforementioned procedure, then you should try this instead:

  1. Press and hold the volume down button first and don’t release it.
  2. Now, press and hold the power key while holding down the volume down button.
  3. Keep both keys held down together for 10 seconds or more.

It’s basically the same as the first procedure but we’re making sure in this procedure that you press and hold the power key after the volume down button because doing otherwise won’t give you similar results.

If it still not responding after doing this procedure, then move on to the next solution.

Second solution: Charge your phone and do the Forced Reboot

Having a drained battery is actually not a big of a problem since you can just connect your phone to its charger anytime. The thing is there are times when some services and hardware components aren’t properly shut down if you let your device run out of battery. The result will be a firmware crash due to a depleted battery. If this happens, you’re already dealing with a couple of problems that both result to an unresponsive phone.

We know that a firmware crash will be fixed by forced reboot but if the firmware crashed and the battery is drained, there’s no way you can make your phone turn on by doing the said method nor will you be able to make it charge since firmware plays a big role in the charging process. To address this possibility, here’s what you need to do:

  1. Plug the charger to a working AC outlet. Use a wired charger for this.
  2. Using the original cable, connect your phone to its charger.
  3. Regardless whether your Galaxy S9 shows the charging signs or not, leave it connected to its charger for 10 minutes.
  4. Now, press and hold the Volume Down button and don’t release it.
  5. While holding it down, press and hold the Power key.
  6. Keep both keys held down for 10 seconds or more.

If your phone indeed drained its battery and its firmware crashed, then it should be booting up now after you’ve done this procedure. However, if it remained unresponsive and you haven’t noticed any improvements, then it’s time to bring it back to the store or shop so that a technician can check it up for you.

Third solution: Wipe Cache Partition and Master Reset

You only need to do the following procedures if this problem happens every now and then to give your device a fresh start with it new firmware.

Wipe Cache Partition

This will delete all the system cache and may have similar result as the reset but your files and data won’t be deleted if you did this. It’s safe and effective:

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Android logo displays, release all three keys.
  4. An ‘Installing system update’ message will show for 30 – 60 seconds before the Android system recovery menu options appear.
  5. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight wipe cache partition.
  6. Press Power key to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key to highlight yes, them and press the Power key to select.
  8. When the wipe cache partition is complete, Reboot system now is highlighted.
  9. Press the Power key to restart the device.

Master Reset

This procedure will wipe off every third-party app, data and file in your phone’s internal storage and bring all the settings back to factory configuration. You need to backup your files before doing this but it’s also very effective in fixing almost any problem. You have to do this if your phone keeps experiencing black screen of death issue:

  1. Back up data on the internal memory. If you have signed into a Samsung account on the device, you have activated Anti-theft and will need your Samsung credentials to finish the master reset.
  2. Turn off the device.
  3. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  4. When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  5. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
  6. Press Power button to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  8. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  9. When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  10. Press the Power key to restart the device.
