How To Divide In Excel

Are you trying to figure out how you can divide numbers in Microsoft Excel, but are having trouble nailing down exactly how that works? Well, you’ve come to the right place. We’ll show you very easily how you can divide two numbers or cells together in an Excel sheet. It’s worth noting that this works for Google Sheets as well. Follow along below!

Microsoft Excel Formulas

Microsoft Excel itself doesn’t have a specific function for division. Instead, it’s a special character that you have to add into a column with a formula. One important thing to remember before we start is that all Microsoft Excel formulas start with the “=” sign. So, if the formula we create in just a moment isn’t working for you, make sure that it begins with the equal sign! You’ll also want to make sure that you’re using the division symbol. That character would be “/” on your keyboard.

So, here’s how this works:

  1. In type a number into cell A2.
  2. Next, type a number into cell B2.

Now that we’ve entered the data, we’re ready to divide. Use this formula in cell C1 to divide the values of A2 and B2 together:

  1. In Cell C1, type in =A2/B2

Congratulations, you’ve now entered the values of two cells together. Alternatively, you could simply use one cell to add two numbers together. Try it for yourself by typing this into cell A2:

  1. =5/25

The value of 25 divided by dived by 5 would show up in cell cell A2!

As you can see, it’s very easy to divide in Microsoft Excel, especially if you’re dealing exclusively with basic math. It can get a lot more complex than how we showed you as well, such as in calculating percentiles. It’s worth noting that these characters, commands, and formulas will work in Google Sheets as well.
