Youtube causes Samsung Galaxy S9 to lag and freeze when opened (easy steps)

Youtube is one of the pre-installed applications in your Samsung Galaxy S9 or any Android smartphone for that matter. There are times when you will encounter problem while using it and it could be just a minor issue with the app itself or it could be just a sign of a more serious firmware issue. In this post, I will walk you through in troubleshooting your Galaxy S9 with some issues with Youtube app. We will try to look into each possibility and rule them out one by one until we can determine what the real issue is and develop a solution that may fix it for good. What to do if Galaxy S9 freezes when Youtube app is used

It’s not a common problem but it seems like it just another sign of an app-related issue. There’s also a possibility that it’s due to some inconsistencies with the firmware so we really have to do some troubleshooting procedures to be able to determine what the problem is and what needs to be done to fix it. That said, here’s what I suggest you do about this problem…

First solution: Use Youtube while your phone is in safe mode

Youtube is a pre-installed app and it may be linked to other apps you downloaded from the Play Store especially ones that offer video sharing. It is possible that when Youtube is opened, other apps that use its service also run in the background and do their thing and that might be the reason why your phone freezes. Try to disable all third-party applications and use Youtube to know if the device still freezes or not. To be able to do that, you just have to run your device in safe mode and this is how you do it:

  1. Turn the device off.
  2. Press and hold the Power key past the model name screen appearing on the screen.
  3. When SAMSUNG appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  4. Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  5. Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  6. When Safe mode appears in the bottom left corner of the screen, release the Volume down key.

If Youtube works perfectly while your phone is in this mode, then it confirms our suspicion that there’s an app that causes the problem. Find that app and uninstall it from your device. Here’s how you do that:

  1. From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
  2. Tap Settings > Apps.
  3. Tap the desired application in the default list.
  4. To display preinstalled apps, tap Menu > Show system apps.
  5. Tap UNINSTALL > OK.

However, if your phone still freezes when Youtube is used even in this mode, then the problem could be in the firmware. Try the next solution.

Second solution: Clear cache and data of Youtube

This will bring the app back to its default settings or configuration so if the problem is just limited to the app, then this procedure will fix it. You won’t lose any of your files by doing this and it’s also safe for your data:

  1. From a Home screen, touch and swipe up or down to display all apps.
  2. From a Home screen, navigate: Settings > Apps.
  3. Tap App Manager.
  4. Locate then tap Youtube.
  5. Tap Storage.
  6. Tap CLEAR CACHE.
  7. Tap Cached data.
  8. Tap CLEAR.
  9. Reboot your phone to refresh its memory.

After doing this and the app still crashes, then it’s possible that the problem is with the firmware and try doing the next solutions.

Third solution: Delete system cache

It’s always possible that the cause of this problem are some corrupt system caches. These are small files created by the firmware so that all apps and services will run smoothly on your phone. When some of them gets corrupted or become obsolete, performance issues may occur including crashing of some apps. To rule this possibility out, you need to do this:

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Android logo displays, release all three keys.
  4. An ‘Installing system update’ message will show for 30 – 60 seconds before the Android system recovery menu options appear.
  5. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight wipe cache partition.
  6. Press Power key to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key to highlight yes, them and press the Power key to select.
  8. When the wipe cache partition is complete, Reboot system now is highlighted.
  9. Press the Power key to restart the device.

If the app still crashes after this, then you will have to do the Master Reset to fix it because clearly now, it’s a firmware issue although it’s still a minor one.

Fifth solution: Perform the Master Reset

If this is just a problem with the app or firmware, then a reset will fix it. However, make sure you make a backup of your important files and data as they will be deleted. After which, follow these steps to to reset your S9 Plus:

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  4. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
  5. Press Power button to select.
  6. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  7. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  8. When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  9. Press the Power key to restart the device.
