What to do if Galaxy Note5 icon notifications (badge) not working properly after Android Oreo update

Many #GalaxyNote5 users may find Android Oreo messing up with their notification settings. That’s a fact. In one sample case below, one user noticed that his Note5’s notifications or icon badges appear to not work properly by displaying incorrect badge figures after Android Oreo update. In this short troubleshooting article, we’ll tackle this particular issue as well as other problems.

Problem #1: Galaxy Note5 app icon notifications (badge) not working properly after Android Oreo update

Hello. I have a Samsung Galaxy Note5. Last night I got a samsung upgrade notification so I allowed the upgrade to take place I’m at Android 8.0 and Samsung Experience 9.0 so now all the icons appear to be smaller even smaller than before which I don’t like but my main issue is regular text messenger displays the incorrect number of texts received. If I get a text from one person it’ll display a number four as if for new text messages came in but it is only one message. Even if I send a group text to two people and they reply then it’ll say 6 that number will be displayed on the messenger icon. So if I get like 3 messages from 3 different people it’ll display like 12 or just some weird number when I woke up this morning and said I had 14 text and it was only 4 of them. Solution: Updates can sometimes change operating system configurations resulting to issues. Any of these solutions below should help in fixing this problem.

Clear the cache partition

Wiping your Note5’s cache partition will help ensure that the system cache is fresh. Sometimes, updates may corrupt this cause, which can then lead to performance issues or some other minor annoyances. Below are the steps to take to clear the cache partition:

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds, then ‘No command’ before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  4. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight “wipe cache partition”.
  5. Press Power button to select.
  6. Press the Volume down key to highlight “yes” and press the Power key to select.
  7. When the wipe cache partition is complete, “Reboot system now” is highlighted.
  8. Press the Power key to restart the device.

Install app updates

This is a basic but often forgotten maintenance step. In your case, you want to make sure that all of your apps are not just updated but also compatible. Most official apps from known publishers are compatible with the latest Android versions but some apps may not. It’s your responsibility to keep your apps updated and compatible. If you get apps from other sources outside the Play Store, pay close attention to them and ensure that they’re compatible. If you don’t know how to update them, contact their developers.

If all your apps are taken from the Play Store, be sure to update all of them (if you change the default setting that allows the app to download and install updates automatically). Here’s how to do that:

  1. Open Play Store app.
  2. Tap More settings at the upper left (three-line icon).
  3. At the very top where you see the photo for the selected Google account, tap on the profile photo of the account you want to use.
  4. Once you’ve selected the profile you want, select My apps & games and update your apps.

Delete data of BadgeProvider app

Notification-related issues can sometimes be caused by a bug in BadgeProvider app. This is an app, in general, that manages notifications for the system and apps. To ensure that it stays good, make sure that you reset it to its factory state. Here’s how:

  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Tap Apps.
  3. Tap on More settings at the upper right (three-dot icon).
  4. Select Show system apps.
  5. Find and tap your app.
  6. Tap Storage.
  7. Tap Clear Data button.
  8. Restart your S9 and check for the problem.

Factory reset

The last but not the least is factory reset. You should do this if nothing of the solutions above helps.

  1. Create a backup of your data.
  2. Turn off the device.
  3. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  4. When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  5. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
  6. Press Power button to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  8. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  9. When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  10. Press the Power key to restart the device.

Problem #2: Galaxy Note5 randomly returns to Home screen

Galaxy Note5 randomly returns to home screen. It happens very often sometimes. It interrupts whatever Im doing on the web and there I am looking at my home screen. This is happening with 2 Galaxy Note5’s that I have. Neither one is connected to a service carrier. I connect to my roommates wifi. I cant make calls/texts. I use them for searching the web, FB , messenger and a couple apps. I have no games and only 3 – 4 apps total. I close tabs, clear cache, reboot even factory reset. This is the 3rd time I’ve filled in this questionnaire because of the problem.

Solution: Does this issue only occur when using one app or multiple apps? If it’s just for one app such as a web browser, try wiping its cache, then its data, to see if that will fix the problem. Follow the steps above on how to wipe an app’s cache and/or data.

If the issue occurs on multiple apps and there’s no specific pattern that you do that might cause them to crash, do a factory reset. This should address any possible software bug that causes apps to crash. Again, refer to the steps above on how to factory your phone.

Problem #3: Galaxy Note5 keeps crashing or stopping, only works when side of the phone is pressed

On my Samsung galaxy Note5  i have this problem. i don’t know if it is a hardware issue or software. Many times it crashes and have video bug. sound of video it like 3 second like slow motion no sound at all and some time he said process system is not responding. or when i try to call someone there’s no sound and it crashes saying “phone process is not responding.” When this happens, i can’t do anything as the screen stops and everything else. I found out that when i press on phone corners it goes back to normal but there’s still no sound. When i reboot the phone i get a black wallpaper and can’t move in the phone or enter any thing till i press on the corner or portion of the phone. i get my wallpaper back and the sound and everything else for a while may be 10 min may be a day or half a dar or sometimes need to rebbot it many times . I couldn’t flash it cause of my usb blog is corrupted. tell me what should i do for it.

Solution: If your phone was accidentally dropped or exposed to water before, it may be experiencing the side effects. Said side effects may be the reason why the phone keeps freezing or stopping. The motherboard is a fragile piece in your phone that holds all the circuits and other components. If an accidental drop or water has damaged it or its circuits, it can lead to all sorts of problems. Stop wasting your time looking for software solutions as there’s no software modification or configuration that can fix a physically broken component. Have your phone checked by a professional so it can be repaired or replaced. We suggest that you let Samsung handle the repair so you’ll get a guaranteed repair or replacement.

Problem #4: Galaxy Note5 can’t delete photos from SD card

Hi.  I have an SD card in my Galaxy Note5 phone and have used it and downloaded pictures to my computer with no problems, until recently. After downloading my pictures to my computer, I tried to delete the pictures from my phone.  They seem to disappear for a few moments, but then they pop back up. I cannot delete pictures saved to my SD card. I have reset my phone but that didn’t fix the problem. I have changed the storage location setting to the memory card.  At one point, I thought I saw a message flash quickly that read that my photos were protected. I don’t even know how to protect them! Since this time, any photos I take are automatically saved to the phone’s memory instead of the SD card. Please help! Thank you.

Solution: You may have encrypted the SD card by mistake, forcing it not to allow the camera app to save photos. If you don’t know if it’s encrypted or protected by some other protocols, you can reformat it so you can use it normally again.

To format an SD card:

  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Tap Device maintenance.
  3. Tap Storage.
  4. Tap SD card.
  5. Tap More settings at the upper right (three-dot icon).
  6. Select Storage settings.
  7. Tap SD card.
  8. Tap Format.
