How to fix an HTC U12 / U12 Plus smartphone that keeps disconnecting from a Wi-Fi network [Troubleshooting Guide]

One of the first things smartphone users do upon owning a new device is to use Wi-Fi to go online. Typically, everything should work well after the initial setup. However, there are factors that can lead to early problems to occur. As a result, Wi-Fi connectivity functions won’t work as intended and adverse symptoms occur. Tackled in this post is one of the common network issues affecting the new HTC U12/U12+ smartphone. If you own this new HTC smartphone and for some reasons it kept on disconnecting from the Wi-Fi network, I’ve mapped out some simple solutions for you to try on. First solution: Turn Wi-Fi off and on then reboot your phone.

A simple trick that’s been doing wonders to many people who have dealt with minor Wi-Fi errors and other network connectivity issues is by toggling the Wi-Fi switch off and then on again. It somehow restarts and refreshes wireless connections on the phone. And here’s how it’s done:

  1. Tap Settings from the Home screen.
  2. Tap the Networks tab.
  3. Then tap the Wi-Fi switch to turn the feature off and then on again.

After turning Wi-Fi off and on, reboot your phone (soft reset) to dump cache files and corrupted data from the internal memory. To do this, simply press and hold the Power button and Volume Down button simultaneously for a few seconds and then release both buttons when the phone power cycles.

If your phone still disconnects from the Wi-Fi network after performing this trick, then you’ll need to try other options.

Second solution: End/close all background applications.

Background apps when they crashed or get corrupted can affect certain functions on the phone. When this happens, adverse symptoms are triggered. To make sure this isn’t what’s causing your device to give into frequent Wi-Fi disconnects, clear all background apps on your HTC U12/U12+ with these steps:

  1. Tap Settings from the Home screen.
  2. Tap the General tab.
  3. Tap Apps.
  4. Tap to All to view a list of all apps.
  5. Tap to select an app from the list.
  6. Tap Force Stop.
  7. Then tap OK to confirm.

Follow the same steps to clear the rest of your background apps then reboot your phone to dump the cache. Try that and see if that stabilizes your Wi-Fi connection. If not, then consider the next option.

Third solution: Forget Wi-Fi networks on your phone.

It’s also possible that your device couldn’t establish a secure connection to the wireless network simply because the network itself is corrupted. Should this be the case, the problem will likely be resolved by forgetting or deleting the corrupted network from your device memory. After deleting the network, you can restart your network connections by setting up the wireless network again and then connect to Wi-Fi like the first time your phone does after the initial setup. Here’s how:

  1. Tap Settings from the Home screen.
  2. Tap the Networks tab.
  3. Tap the Wi-Fi switch to turn Wi-Fi on, if necessary.
  4. Tap Wi-Fi to continue.
  5. Then touch and hold the Wi-Fi network you want to delete.
  6. Tap Forget network to confirm Wi-Fi network deletion.

Reboot your phone afterwards and then scan and reconnect to Wi-Fi with these steps:

  1. Navigate to Settings-> Networks tab.
  2. Then tap the Wi-Fi switch to enable Wi-Fi.
  3. Tap Wi-Fi then select your Wi-Fi network from the list.
  4. If prompted, enter the network password to continue.
  5. Then tap Connect.

Allow your device to connect to the wireless network as if it’s the first time it does. Then test to see if it is now working as intended. If it still disconnects, then you may have to resort to settings resets.

Fourth solution: Reset network settings on your HTC U12/U12+.

The following steps will reset all data connections on your HTC U12/U12+ back to their default values. Your Wi-Fi networks, tethered connections, and Bluetooth devices will be deleted and other network options and device connections status are set to their original values. Any network errors caused by incorrect network settings or invalid options will also be cleared in the process. Here’s how to perform a network reset on your new HTC U12/U12+ device:

  1. Tap Settings from the Home screen.
  2. Tap General tab.
  3. Tap Restart & reset.
  4. Select Network settings reset from the given options.
  5. Then tap Reset Settings twice to confirm.

If you see the Network settings have been reset message that flashes briefly, it means that the network reset is complete. At this point, reboot your device to refresh the operating system and internal memory. Then set up and reconnect to your Wi-Fi network.

Fifth solution: Update software and wipe cache partition on your HTC U12/U12+.

Installing the latest software update on your phone can potentially resolve network problems that are inflicted by bugs and malware. Aside from the new and enhanced features an update brings, it also embeds some fix patches to address bug-inflicted issues on the receiving devices. To check for new update for your HTC U12/U12+ via OTA, follow these steps:

  1. Tap Settings from the Home screen.
  2. Tap General tab.
  3. Tap Update center, then tap System update.
  4. Tap the option to Check for update.

If an update is available, read and review the requirements. If all the requirements are met, follow the onscreen prompts to download and install the latest software update on your HTC U12/U12+. After updating the device software to the latest version, wipe cache partition on your phone with these steps:

  1. Be sure the phone is off.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Down key.
  3. Turn the phone on by pressing the Power key until the phone vibrates, then release Power.
  4. Continue holding the Volume Down key.
  5. Release the Volume Down key when the black screen with red and blue lines of text appears.
  6. Press the Volume Down key repeatedly until reboot to bootloader is highlighted.
  7. Press the Power key.
  8. The device will display a white screen with colored text.
  9. Press the Volume Down key repeatedly until BOOT TO RECOVERY MODE is highlighted.
  10. Press the Power key. The screen will flash HTC, wait for the next screen.
  11. Press Volume Down key to highlight wipe cache partition.
  12. Press the Power key.
  13. Press the Volume Down key to highlight Yes on the ‘Wipe cache?’ screen.
  14. Press the Power key.
  15. Once complete, press the Power key again to select Reboot system now.

This is recommended to prevent the system from acting up after implementing new software changes.

Other options

  • Master reset/factory data reset. You may resort to a factory reset or master reset to rule out major system errors. It also helps in obliterating tough bugs and malware that might have caused complex network problems on the device. The only downside is that you’ll also lose all your critical data and personal information in the process. Should you wish to proceed though, back up your files for safekeeping. Then you can proceed with a master reset through settings or reset your HTC U12/U12+ in Android recovery mode using hardware keys.
  • Reboot network equipment. If all your devices are experiencing the same problem, then most likely the network equipment is at fault. In this case, power cycling the wireless router or modem can help. Simply turn it off then unplug it from the power source for about 30 seconds to 1 minute. After the elapsed time, plug it back in then turn on. If the problem persists on all devices afterwards, contact the manufacturer of your router or modem for further assistance. The network equipment may need to be provisioned or reset.
  • Contact your ISP. You need to contact your Internet service provider or carrier to report the issue for further assistance and other options. You can also request your carrier to run a network test or check the outage board on their end. One of the possible reasons as to why your HTC U12/U12+ or any other smartphone would experience intermittent network connection or Wi-Fi disconnects is an outage. So make sure it’s not what’s causing you with such trouble.
