Galaxy A5 charging is erratic, won’t charge or charges very slowly

Today’s troubleshooting episode will talk about the #GalaxyA5 device and some of its common problems. If you have a Galaxy A5 that has a problem charging, this post may help.

Problem #1: Galaxy A5 charging is erratic, won’t charge randomly, charges very slowly

I have a Samsung galaxy a5. I have tried 4 different chargers on my phone and two of which I bought as recently as a few weeks ago. Some of the chargers don’t charge my phone at all. They all seem to fit somewhat loose. The one that seems to have the tightest fit is the one that is best at charging my phone. It used to charge my phone plugged in both upside down or right side up. Then last week it only charged it right side up. Now the last few days only upside down.. this charger seems to charge my phone best on a computer at work. In my car or on my counter top at home I have to fiddle any charger I use into the right position to get it charging. I always wait a few minutes to see if it’s still charging and sometimes it is but then when I call asleep it stops charging.. I took my phone to a virgin mobile store and the guy said I can tell just by looking at your phone your charging port isn’t loose and there’s no dirt in there. I feel like he is wrong because one he barely looked at it and two how cab 4 different chargers with two chargers being new all be so finicky with how I position them into my Phone? Also should mention phone only chargew fast in battery power saving mode. In regular mode charges about 10 percent an hour. Please help.

Solution: For a situation like yours, it’s very rare that the cause is software in nature, that is, app-related or operating system bug. In majority of cases, a device may not charge properly due to a broken charging port, just like what the Virgin Mobile representative had told you. To check if this is a software issue, wipe the phone and return all software information to their defaults with factory reset. We know for a fact that factory state software won’t cause any charging issue so factory is the best tool to determine if our suspicion is correct.

To factory reset your A5:

  1. Create a backup of your files.
  2. Turn off the device.
  3. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key, then press and hold the Power key.
  4. When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  5. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
  6. Press Power button to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  8. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  9. When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  10. Press the Power key to restart the device.

Now that your A5 has been reset, it’s the best time to see how charging works. Make sure to use the known working charging accessory to see any difference. If charging is still erratic, you should have the charging port checked by Samsung. This almost always result to repair so be sure to prepare to pay for it if the phone is out of warranty.

Problem #2: Galaxy  A5 can’t use custom ringtone after Android Oreo update, screen won’t turn on during calls

Since he Oreo update on my Galaxy A5 I’ve had 2 issues with the built-in phone app.  The first is I can change the ringtone for all cal, but it reverts back to the Verizon waves default ringtone.  I noticed in all apps there are 3 “Phone” listed. Looks like they are for different functions but I don’t recall having them broken out.   I cleared the cache of all and the one that had the option to set the ringtone I changed it to another stock ringtone and also tried an imported ringtone but it change back to the default.  

The other issue happens when the phone rings.  The screen doesn’t turn on, caller ID and answer/ignore buttons popped-up full screen, even when the phone was locked.  Now all I get is a small banner across the top of the screen with only the answer/ignore buttons. I’ve tried rebooting several times, clearing teh cache and uninstalled any app that interacts with teh phone.  I have not done a factory reset as that seems to be using a sledgehammer to hang a picture and I can’t remove the battery.

Solution: We don’t think Samsung has already released Android Oreo for A5s, nor are we positive that it’s even capable of running it but if you’re positive that the issues occur right after updating, then there are three important things that you can try. First is to wipe the cache partition. This should address any possibility that the issue is system cache related. To wipe the cache partition, follow these steps:

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the device logo screen displays, release only the Power key
  4. When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  5. Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  6. Press the Power key to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key to highlight ‘yes’ and press the Power key to select.
  8. When the wipe cache partition is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  9. Press the Power key to restart the device.

The second troubleshooting step that you must do is to apply updates for your apps. Installing the latest Android update must have caused some app/s to become incompatible. Make sure to check Google Play Store for updates for all apps. If you install apps outside of the Play Store, make sure that those apps are compatible with the current operating system version to avoid bugs.

Lastly, you have to factory reset your device if the issues persists. This will ensure that your phone’s Android version is set back to its factory version. This won’t return the operating system version to Android Nougat or older but it will ensure that Android Oreo configurations are properly done. It will also get rid of third party apps and other incompatible services that may be behind the trouble. Refer to the steps above on how to factory reset your A5.

Can’t use custom ringtone and notifications after Oreo update

If you are right to say that your A5 now runs Android Oreo, then that’s the reason why you can’t use other ringtones other than the default ones for calls or assign them to your contacts. The issue mainly occurs if you use the default text messaging app. Try using another messaging app such as  Android Messages.

To resolve your second set of issues, try to reset your A5’s settings with these steps and see if that will work. If not, go ahead with factory reset as suggested above.

To reset all settings on your Galax5 A5:

  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Tap General management.
  3. Tap Reset.
  4. Tap Reset settings.
  5. Tap RESET SETTINGS button to confirm.
  6. Restart your A5 and check for the problem.

Problem #3: Galaxy A5 deletes photos and videos on its own

I’ve had a Samsung Galaxy A5 for about 8 months. When i first got it, it deleted almost 100 pictures within a day of taking them. I was devastated. It continued to do it. I’d installed other camera/gallery apps and i thought maybe it made everything confused so i deleted them. Slowly over a period of weeks the Galaxy “lost” fewer and fewer photos, but periodically it would do it again. This last time i practically watched them disappear. From the beginning it seemed like when a bunch of photos went away, just one or two would often remain and those seemed to be what i’d shared. I thought sharing them would save them. It doesn’t work anymore. I just ran a drama camp and even video that i took would be gone immediately after i stopped filming. I thought it was a problem with a lack of space in my phone storage so i moved a lot of old pictures (that had built up for a couple of years) to my computer and freed up about five gig. . . so the phone had no reason to delete pictures, but it still did. It’s driving me nuts. . . and hurting a lot of people who count on my pictures (i used to be a professional photog so when friends/family see me taking pictures, they quit and expect me to share). So i asked other people who were filming/taking pictures to share with me. They did, and even though i downloaded them to my phone and they were sent via WeChat, they disappeared. NOTE: I am a retired American doing volunteer work in China usually eight months out of the year. During those times, i use a China Unicom sim card. The phone first deleted pictures in the US when i was an AT&T customer.

Solution: We are not aware of this issue happening on other Galaxy devices so yours might be an isolated case. Unfortunately, there’s really no diagnostic steps that we can recommend that can help you identify why this is happening. If you have plenty of apps installed on your device, it’s possible that one of them may be causing it. For what reason, we can’t even imagine. To see if it’s an app issue, wipe the phone clean by doing a factory reset and let it run when there are no third party apps at all. With your phone in factory condition, try to replicate the issue by taking as many photos and videos and observe the phone for at least a week.

If that won’t make any difference at all, the problem is most probably beyond your ability to fix. This can mean your phone may have an unknown software, coding, or hardware bug that causes it to automatically delete photos on its own. In this case, we suggest that you get a repalcement phone to resolve it.
