Some of our readers reported that their Samsung Galaxy S8 units turned off and won’t turn back on after updating them to Android 8.0 Oreo. The problem, of course, left an impression that the issue was caused by a bad update but we really can’t be sure if that’s really the case. We need to do some basic troubleshooting procedures to be able to determine what the problem is really all about and then from there, we will be able to formulate something we could use to try and fix it.
In this post, I will walk you through in troubleshooting your Galaxy S8 that would no longer power up after being updated to Android Oreo. And since I’ve personally encountered this problem in the past, I will share with you the solution I’ve used to fix my phone. What to do with Galaxy S8 that won’t turn on after Android Oreo update
I’ve reached out to a couple of our readers who have encountered this kind of problem and according to them, their phones turned off as it they ran out of battery but when they tried charging it, it won’t respond. I asked them if there is a chance that their devices could have suffered from physical and liquid damage but they said no. So, here’s what I asked them to do…
First solution: Forced reboot
It is just a very simple procedure but it could be the only thing you need to do to make your phone respond again. What it does is refresh your phone’s memory by simulating battery pull procedure. It will also reload all the apps, services and core functions. To do this, press and hold the volume down and power keys at the same time for 10 seconds or more. The device may boot up normally after this but if not, then try this instead:
- Press and hold the volume down button and don’t release it yet.
- Press and hold the power key while you’re holding down the volume down button.
- Keep both keys held down together for 10 seconds or more.
It’s basically the same as the first procedure only that we’re trying to make sure that you press and hold the power key after the volume down button because doing otherwise won’t give you the same result. If the firmware crashed after a firmware update, then your phone should already be booting up by now but if not, then you should try the next procedure.

Second solution: Charge and Force Restart
You need to do this procedure to rule out the possibility that the problem is caused by both a drained battery and system crash. When the battery is already at a very low level and you’re still using the phone, the juice may run out with the phone still being used and this will result to a system crash as the hardware and firmware aren’t properly shut down. So, you’re actually dealing with a couple of issues here instead of one.
I said that your phone will always respond when the Volume Down and Power keys are held together for a certain amount of time but if the battery is drained, there’s no way your phone will actually turn on. So, try doing this:
- Plug the charger to a working AC outlet. Use a wired charger for this.
- Using the original cable, connect your phone to its charger.
- Regardless whether your Galaxy S8 shows the charging signs or not, leave it connected to its charger for 10 minutes.
- Now, press and hold the Volume Down button and don’t release it.
- While holding it down, press and hold the Power key.
- Keep both keys held down for 10 seconds or more.
If your phone indeed drained its battery and its firmware crashed, then it should be booting up now after you’ve done this procedure. However, if it remained unresponsive and you haven’t noticed any improvements, then it’s time to bring it back to the store or shop so that a technician can check it up for you.
