Samsung Galaxy J5 shows ‘moisture detected’ warning when plugged in and not charging [Troubleshooting Guide]

The warning message “Moisture has been detected. Troubleshooting Galaxy J5 that doesn’t charge with ‘moisture detected’ error

The Galaxy J5 doesn’t have the Ingress Protection (IP67 or IP68) rating so unlike S7 and S8 variants, it’s more prone to having liquid damage. When it shows the ‘moisture detected’ warning, the first thing you should do is turn the device off to make sure that if water has found its way into your phone, then there wouldn’t be some serious damage to the components. Make sure it’s not due to liquid or physical damage

Look into the USB or charger port to see if there really are traces of liquid or moisture and if you can see some droplets in there, then that’s the reason why your phone is popping up the warning message. But regardless whether there’s clear signs of liquid in it or not, you should try something to make sure the port is dry.

You may use a cotton swab to clean around the area or you may get a small piece of tissue paper and insert it into the port to make sure that the moisture will be absorbed. If you have a can of compressed air, give the port a blast or two to remove any foreign objects in there.

Once you’re satisfied that the port is dry, try to check the Liquid Damage Indicator (LDI) of your phone to see if it is tripped or not. A tripped LDI should be red, pink or purple. You can find the LDI when you remove the SIM card tray and look into the slot.

If there’s no sign of liquid damage in your phone, then continue troubleshooting it as there’s a chance that you can fix it on your own and that it’s now safe to troubleshoot. However, if the LDI shows your phone is suffering from a possible liquid damage, don’t hesitate to bring the phone to the tech so that proper procedures should be done.

Turn off your phone and try to charge it

You only have to do this if your phone doesn’t show any signs of liquid damage. It’s imperative that you try to charge your phone while it’s turned off because the one’s preventing it is the error message that you get when you plug it in. The error only shows when the phone is powered up but when it’s turned off, the charging process will be between the charger and your phone’s hardware. There’s a little assistance by the firmware but all other services won’t run so basically, if the phone isn’t suffering from any serious hardware-related issues, it should charge.

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Applications.
  4. Tap Application manager.
  5. Swipe left a few times to display contents of ALL tab.
  6. Find and touch USB Settings.
  7. Tap Clear cache.

This should allow you to charge your phone now and even fix the problem. However, if the error continues to display the ‘moisture detected’ error, move on to the next step.

Reset your phone to rule out the possibility of a firmware issue

If the phone still has enough battery, try to create a backup of your important files and data as you will be resetting it. There’s no guarantee this procedure will fix the problem but it’s imperative that you do this procedure to make sure the problem isn’t with the firmware. After the backup, remove your google account from your device that then follow these steps to reset your phone:

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the device logo screen displays, release only the Power key
  4. When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  5. Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
  6. Press Power button to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  8. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  9. When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  10. Press the Power key to restart the device.

Bring your phone to the service center

If the reset failed to fix the problem, then it’s time you have someone who can physically inspect your phone. Bring it to the nearest service center so that a Samsung tech can take a look at it. You will be advised as to why this problem occurs and what needs to be done to fix it. If the tech can prove this problem is due to liquid damage, you can’t claim warranty.
