Samsung Galaxy J3 (2017) cannot fully charge its battery after an update [Troubleshooting Guide]

Problems like this are often due to some problems with the hardware but of course, there are cases wherein they occur due to some apps or firmware glitches.

The point is, we won’t for sure what’s preventing your phone from charging if we didn’t try to troubleshoot. So, in this post, I will walk you through in troubleshooting your Galaxy J3 that can’t complete the charging process. We will try to look into every possibility and rule them out one by one until we can determine the problem, that way, we can try to formulate a solution that might fix it for good. How to troubleshoot Galaxy J3 that can’t fully-charge

Problem: Hi. Recently my Galaxy J3 got updated and since then it seems that its performance slowed down a bit but I can live with that. What I’m worried about is that it can no longer fully charge its battery. It stays on 92% even if I already tried leaving it plugged in for almost a day. It charges but when it reaches 92%, it shows its charging but the percentage remains. I’m not quite sure what to do about this so can you help me?

Troubleshooting: When there are a lot of apps running in the background, the phone may drain its battery quicker than normal and when you plug it in to charge, it may appear that it’s charging but the battery percentage may not move. Well, that’s just one of the cases we know but let’s see if we can make your phone charge normally again…

Step 1: Make sure you’re using the original charger and cable

This must be the first thing you have to look into because if you’re not using the original charger and cable, then that might be the problem. Remember, your Galaxy J3 comes with a charger that works perfectly with it. Most of the generic chargers available in the market may tell you the same specs but if you actually measure the output, they’re off by one or half an Amp and that might be the reason why the charging process is halted at a certain percentage.

When using the original charger, your phone will trickle charge when it reaches 95% and this goes on until the battery is actually full. This is one feature generic chargers don’t offer that’s why I need you to check if you’re using the original.

Step 2: Try charging your phone in safe mode

As I mentioned above, when there are a lot of apps running in the backup, the phone may drain its battery faster than the charger can charge. You may see the charging icon but the percentage stays at one point and won’t move. By booting your phone in safe mode, you will temporarily disable all third-party apps from running and close all other apps that haven’t been closed. It means your phone will run in its bare bones and if there’s no issue with its battery, hardware or the charger, then it should charge properly when in this environment. So, follow these steps to boot your phone in safe mode and then try charging it:

  1. Turn the device off.
  2. Press and hold the Power key past the screen with the device name.
  3. When ‘SAMSUNG’ appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  4. Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  5. Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  6. Safe mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.
  7. Release the Volume down key when you see ‘Safe Mode’.

If the phone charges up to 100% when in this mode, then it’s your apps that caused the problem. Next time, try to close apps you don’t use especially games and those that use up so much resources.

However, if the problem still happens even in safe mode, then move on to the next step.

Step 3: Power your phone down and charge

We will now try to find out if your phone can successfully and normally charge when turned off. Usually, the phone will charge faster while turned off as the hardware, firmware and apps don’t use up the battery. Also, your Galaxy J3 has an adaptive fast charging feature so it should do that while turned off. If it does, then the problem is with the firmware but let your phone charge its battery first and then do the next step.

Step 4: Backup files and data and then reset your phone

You have to do this if your phone charges fine while turned off. It should fix the problem but you have to backup your files and data as they will be deleted during the reset. After the backup, make sure to disable the Factory Reset Protection so that you won’t be locked out of your device:

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Cloud and accounts.
  4. Tap Accounts.
  5. Tap Google.
  6. Tap your Google ID email address. If you have multiple accounts setup, you will need to repeat these steps for each account.
  7. Tap Menu.
  8. Tap Remove account.
  9. Tap REMOVE ACCOUNT.

To reset your phone, follow these steps…

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the device logo screen displays, release only the Power key
  4. When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  5. Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
  6. Press Power button to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  8. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  9. When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  10. Press the Power key to restart the device.

But assuming the phone still can’t complete the charging process even if it’s turned off, then you should do the next step.

Step 5: Try using a different charger

We will now move to rule out the possibility that the charger is defective or no longer gives out correct power. If you can borrow a Samsung charger from someone, then do that just to check if their charger works for your phone. You may also try turning your phone off and then connect it to a computer to see if it charges up to 100%, if it still won’t, then at this point, it’s clear the problem is with the hardware.

Step 6: Bring your phone to the shop

If the phone can’t continue charging the battery up to 100% after doing everything we tackled above, there’s a higher possibility the problem is with the hardware. You need a technician to take a look at your phone now.

Make sure to tell the technician what happened to it and what you’ve done so far to make it charge again so that you don’t have to wait longer.
