How to fix Galaxy S7 with black screen when using YouTube or Instagram apps

Hello Android fans! Welcome to today’s #GalaxyS7 troubleshooting guide. These past few weeks, ever since Samsung rolled out Android Oreo for the S7, a lot problems have been reported to us. In this post, we want to continue to address S7 issues. We can’t determine if they’re due to the latest update so it’s for you to decipher the cases we include below.

If you can, kindly include the exact error messages you are getting to give us an idea where to start. Problem #1: Galaxy S7 apps keep crashing after installing Android update, won’t stay on after an update

Message came up stating I had a system update. I wish I’d never agreed to it. My perfectly working only 1 month old phone is now a freaking nightmare. Random apps crash suddenly flashing popup saying “blah blah app has failed or stopped working. Close app or send feedback report.” I’ve closed them, I’ve sent reports. Phone also reboots on its own whenever it wants whether I’m using it or not. Apps crash when I’m not using it also. I’ve started in safe mode but can’t tell of any apps causing it because it does the same crap in safe mode, crashing apps and rebooting. I’ve went to the booting menu and cleared the cache partition, still same issues. I’ve even factory reset and still no change. Err please help. Oh one more thing, it’s still saying I have a system update. It kept screwing up so I said what the hell and it came back error message failed to update. — Robin Smith

Solution: Hi Robin. If your Galaxy S7 was working normally before you installed an over-the-air update, there must be a coding issue with that new update. Factory reset only restores all software settings of the latest Android version running on your phone to their defaults but if the cause of the problem is something deeper, say, an inefficient code, it won’t do anything at all. And looks like that’s exactly what’s happening.

Since you’ve already tried doing almost all the things that you can do in this case, there are only two things that might help:

  • revert Android to its pre-update version
  • get professional help from Samsung.

While it’s possible to roll Android back on your device to its previous version, it’s not without its risks. The procedure, called flashing, can be relatively complicated for the uninitiated. It can potentially cause severe issues if not done properly. If you haven’t heard of “flashing” before, or if you’re not equipped to do it, we recommend that you skip it and instead let Samsung handle the situation. They’re probably end up flashing the device on their end but at least you’ll know it’s done properly.

If you’re interested to know how to flash a previous version of Android to your device, you need to do more research about the topic. Flashing guides can vary by phone model so you must also find the right guide to walk you through the steps.

Problem #2: Galaxy S7 shows black screen when using YouTube or Instagram apps

My Galaxy S7 sometimes just has a black screen pop up and all it does is restart the apps i’m in. i haven’t checked if it does it to all other open apps but if i’m scrolling on something like YouTube then the black screen will pop up for a few seconds and the the app will act like i just opened it and it is refreshing content, if i’m watching something it will stay playing i just miss the video part. it has only happened in YouTube and Instagram because that’s what i mainly use but i haven’t seen any other app do it so i dont know if its a phone problem or the apps but the apps are up to date. — Nijhalbow

Solution: Hi Nijhalbow. We think your issue may be caused by a third party app so here’s what you need to do. First, you want to know if the issue is happening when you’re using a pre-installed app. In most instances, YouTube and Instagram are not part of the usual pre-installed package. When we say pre-installed, these are apps that came with your operating system when you first unboxed the device. Any app you added after setting up your S7 the first time are considered third party, even if they’re from Google, Samsung, or your carrier. Unless YouTube or Instagram were there when you unpacked the device, they’re not considered pre-installed at all. For troubleshooting purposes, you need to check if this issue occurs on other apps as well. If the problem doesn’t happen on other apps, then you should consider focusing your troubleshooting on these two apps only.

How to troubleshoot YouTube and Instagram apps if others are working just fine

If the phenomenon you observed only occurs on these two issues, these are the troubleshooting steps that you should do:

  • clear app cache
  • delete app data
  • reset app preferences
  • reinstall apps

How to clear an app cache

Some bugs are due to corrupted cache so the first thing that you want to do is ensure that you clear the cache of YouTube and Instagram apps. Here’s how:

  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Tap Apps.
  3. Tap More settings (three-dot icon) at the upper-right.
  4. Tap Show system apps.
  5. Find the SIM Toolkit app and tap it.
  6. Tap Storage.
  7. Tap CLEAR CACHE button.
  8. Restart your device.
  9. Check for the problem.

How to clear an app cache

At other times, an app may become problematic if its data (user-specific information) are corrupted. To see if that’s the case, you need to clear an app’s data by doing the steps below:

  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Tap Apps.
  3. Tap More settings (three-dot icon) at the upper-right.
  4. Tap Show system apps.
  5. Find the SIM Toolkit app and tap it.
  6. Tap Storage.
  7. Tap CLEAR DATA button.
  8. Restart your device.
  9. Check for the problem.

How to reset app preferences

The next best thing to do if clearing the apps’ cache and data won’t work is to ensure that your Android device has all the necessary default apps and services up and running. In case you don’t know, an app doesn’t work on its own. Every app requires other Android services and apps to work properly. Sometimes, a critical app or service may be disabled or become buggy. To check if that’s happening on your device right now, make sure that you reset app preferences. Here’s how:

  1. From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Apps.
  4. Tap 3-dot icon at the upper right.
  5. Select Reset app preferences.
  6. Restart your device.
  7. Check for the problem.

Reinstall apps

The issue should have been fixed by now but if your YouTube and Instagram apps are still problematic, you should consider deleting them from your phone. In many cases, app issues are fixed by reinstalling the apps themselves. If you haven’t tried it yet, make sure to do so.

How to troubleshoot YouTube and Instagram apps if pre-installed apps are showing the same issue

If the issue affects other apps, including pre-installed ones, here’s what you can do:

Boot to safe mode

If the issue is true for both pre-installed and third party apps, the best thing that you can do is to check if there’s a third party app causing it. To do that, you want to run your phone to safe mode. In this mode, third party apps won’t be allowed to run. This means that you will only be able to use apps that came with the operating system. So, if the issue won’t occur while your S7 is on safe mode, that’s a clear sign that one of your apps must be to blame.

To boot your S7 to safe mode:

  1. Turn the device off.
  2. Press and hold the Power key past the model name screen.
  3. When “SAMSUNG” appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  4. Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  5. Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  6. Safe mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.
  7. Release the Volume down key when you see Safe Mode.
  8. Let your S7 run in this mode for several hours and check for the problem.

Safe mode blocks third party apps and services. If your device boots up fine on Safe Mode but the problem returns on normal mode, you know that one of your apps is behind the trouble. To know which app is causing a problem, follow these steps:

  1. Boot to safe mode.
  2. Check for the problem.
  3. Once you’ve confirmed that a third party app is to blame, you can start uninstalling apps individually. We suggest that you begin with the most recent ones you added.
  4. After you uninstall an app, restart the phone to normal mode and check for the problem.
  5. If your S7 still refuses to power back on, repeat steps 1-4.

Problem #3: Galaxy S7 keeps refreshing the screen every 5 seconds

Hi. I tried several things, from cleaning the cache, soft reset, etc, and nothing seems to work for me. In some apps, like email, WhatsApp, Camera, etc every say 5 seconds a refresh of the screen takes place, so f.i. the keyboard in WahatsApp disappears every 5 seconds etc. Only in Save mode there seems no problem, so I got rid of several app’s I don’t use often already. Problems started right after the update to Oreo (8.0). I have the option to automaticaly download app-updates when Wifi available. I noticed on the web some references to the same issue for the S8 in the past. I appreciate any help. — Wim Verbeek The Netherlands Wim Verbeek

Solution: Hi Wim. You’ve already taken the first important troubleshooting step here — run the phone on safe mode — and has the hint you’re supposed to be looking for — the issue does not occur on safe mode. This means that one of your apps is to blame. We can’t say what exactly is wrong with that app, or what that app is but it’s definitely an app issue. It may be incompatible with the current Android version running on your phone or it can be totally something else. Whatever its problem is, you need to identify that app so you can remove it from the system. You can’t just selectively uninstall apps and hope that will fix the issue. If the issue remains after you’ve deleted some apps, that means those apps you removed are not the reason for the problem at all! The cause must still be in the system so keep uninstalling until you’ve pinpointed the source of the bug. There’s no magic software trick that you can do to help you fix your problem.
