Galaxy S8 app issues: how to fix Instagram won’t refresh, how to log out of Facebook Messenger

Hello and welcome back to another #GalaxyS8 troubleshooting episode. We want to address two common questions that a lot of users are wondering about:

  • how to fix Instagram won’t refresh, and
  • how to log out of Facebook Messenger.

Problem #1: How to fix Instagram won’t refresh issue on Galaxy S8

I have a Samsung S8 and since my last update i realize that my Instagram keeps freezing or wont refresh and shows old posts from days or hours ago. Sometimes as i go on the screen is even blank with the refresh symbol on top but nothing happens when i try to refresh it or also after looking at a few posts it stops and i see the refresh button and nothing happens when i try to refresh it..it goes on for the whole day sometimes or when i go on the next few days i will see the same post every time i open up instagram, same thing over and over. — Hhemans18

Solution: Hi Hhemans18. We don’t work for Instagram developer team so we can’t say with enough certainty if this is a known bug or not. What we know is that all the Galaxy S8 devices we checked with, Instagram works perfectly on them. Your problem is either unique to your device, or there could be a developing bug for some Galaxy S8 models. To find out what the real cause of your problem is, follow our suggestions below.

Verify internet connection is good

Instagram, just like any other social networking apps, needs to get contents from its servers all the time. Ideally, your phone must be connected to the internet all the time in order to update the feeds on Instagram. If your phone is having an issue connecting to the internet all the time, this can be the reason why Instagram may be coming out as problematic for you. Depending on the type of connection you use (cellular data or wifi), exact steps to check their functionality may vary. The simplest way to know if you have an internet connection problem though is to see how other apps like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc work. If they are also having connectivity problems, then the main reason for your Instagram issue must be connection-related.

If your connection works fine, proceed to the next steps below.

Soft restart

One of the basic yet effective solutions to fixing app issues is by restarting the device. Some app bugs are eliminated once the operating system stops and there’s no easier way to do that by simply turning off your phone for a moment. For troubleshooting purposes, you want to perform a soft restart by doing the steps below:

  1. Press and hold the Power + Volume Down buttons for approximately 10 seconds or until the device power cycles. Note: Allow several seconds for the Maintenance Boot Mode screen to appear.
    From the Maintenance Boot Mode screen, select Normal Boot. You can use the volume buttons to cycle through the available options and the lower left button (below the volume buttons) to select. Also, allow up to 90 seconds for the reset to complete.

Force quit Instagram

One of the solutions to fixing any type of app issue is by restarting the target app itself. Unlike a device restart, this procedure will simply clear the app from the device’s memory (RAM). By doing so, the current app bug causing Instagram app not to refresh its contents may also be cleared. To force quit your Instagram app,

  1. From a Home screen, touch and swipe up or down to display all apps.
  2. From a Home screen, navigate: Settings > Apps.
  3. Ensure All apps is selected (upper-left). If necessary, tap the Dropdown icon Dropdown menu icon (upper-right) then select All apps.
  4. Locate then select the appropriate app. If system apps aren’t visible, tap the Menu icon Vertical more menu icon (upper-right) > Show system apps.
  5. Tap an app.
  6. Tap FORCE STOP.
  7. Tap FORCE STOP to confirm.

Clear Instagram app cache

Should force quitting Instagram app won’t fix the issue, the next troubleshooting step for you is to see if clearing Instagram cache will. Apps use a set of temporary files to do tasks faster. App cache can consist of web links, images, videos, documents, etc. and they’re kept somewhere in your device’s local storage so they can be accessed faster. Sometimes, this cache can get corrupted resulting to apps behaving erratically. At times, a corrupt app cache can also lead to performance problems. To see if the current issue is caused by a corrupt Instagram cache, try clearing its cache by doing the steps below:

  1. From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Apps.
  4. Tap the desired application in the default list or tap 3 dots icon > Show system apps to display pre-installed apps.
  5. Tap Storage.
  6. Tap CLEAR CACHE.
  7. Restart your Galaxy S8 and check for the problem.

Clear Instagram app data

Apps also keep other types of information called data. These type of app information are usually user-defined content, user login or credentials, or app-specific information that’s tied to your user account. Like the cache, app data can also cause problems if they become corrupted. Clearing app’s data is often an effective way to fix an app issue because it basically brings the entire app back to its defaults. If you haven’t tried it yet, follow the steps below:

  1. From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Apps.
  4. Tap the desired application in the default list or tap 3-dot icon > Show system apps to display pre-installed apps.
  5. Tap Storage.
  6. Tap CLEAR DATA.
  7. Restart your Galaxy S8 and check for the problem.

Uninstall Instagram app updates

At times, updates can have mixed effects for an app. To see if the current issue is being caused by a coding issue after installing Instagram update, you can uninstall the updates for your Instagram app. Here’s how to do that:

  1. From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Apps.
  4. Tap the desired application.
  5. Tap 3-dot icon at the upper right.
  6. Tap Uninstall updates.

Clear Facebook and Messenger cache and data (optional)

Ideally, your Instagram issue should already be fixed by now but if that’s still happening, the next good thing to do is to see if Instagram’s associated apps are to blame. Instagram may sometimes act erratically if Facebook app or Facebook Messenger app are buggy. Make sure that you also clear their cache and data. Follow the steps provided above.

Reset app preferences

Apps don’t work on their own. Most apps can only work with the help of other apps or services. Some may need default apps and services in order to perform tasks they’re designed to do. If a critical default app has been disabled or buggy, an app may also stop working properly. To ensure that all default Android apps and services needed by Instagram are working, try to reset all app preferences. This procedure will return all app settings to their default setup. Here’s how to do it:

  1. From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Apps.
  4. Tap 3-dot icon at the upper right.
  5. Select Reset app preferences.

Reset settings

In some rare cases, app issues may be caused by incorrect operating system configuration. This can occur for varied reasons so if the issue still remains at this time, don’t hesitate to reset all settings back to their defaults. Here’s how to do that:

  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Tap General management.
  3. Tap Reset.
  4. Tap Reset settings.
  5. Tap RESET SETTINGS button.
  6. Restart your S8 and check for the problem.

Reinstall Instagram

Should the issue won’t go away after doing the suggestions above, you should consider uninstalling Instagram to see how it works after you install it back.

To uninstall Instagram:

  1. Go to the Home screen.
  2. Tap Apps button.
  3. Find Instagram.
  4. Press and hold Instagram app, then move it to the Uninstall icon to remove it.

Once you’ve uninstalled Instagram, restart your phone and reinstall the app again from the Play Store.

Some carrier-branded phones may include Instagram in their pre-installed apps. In that case, you won’t be unable to uninstall the app so the most that you can do is to clear its data.

Contact app developer

If nothing works so far, you can either leave the issue as it is until a patch will be released, or you can contact the app developer team so you can create a ticket for the bug. With its popularity, there’s no guarantee that the developer may right away come up with a fix for your bug report but we highly recommend that you do it anyway. If this issue is pervasive and occurs in many devices, the ticket you create should help “upvote” the issue. The more users report the same problem, the more likely the developer will notice them first.

To create a bug ticket for your Instagram app:

  1. Open Instagram app.
  2. Tap the Profile icon.
  3. Tap the three-dot icon at the top.
  4. Select Report a Problem.

Problem #2: How to log out of Facebook Messenger app on your Galaxy S8

When seeking an answer for how to log out of Facebook Messenger, I see online that the only option is to delete data via “Apps” to “Messenger” in the Android phone. But I’m seeing at some sites that doing so will permanently remove various things like messenger chats and/or addresses, and so forth. If I do clear data in order to log out, what will I permanently lose? How can I get around this? How can I log out of messenger without deleting data? Thank you so much! — Paul

Solution: Hi Paul. Like Android, apps evolve so features don’t usually last. In the past, we know that Facebook Messenger did not have an option to log out but at the time of this writing, there’s actually an easy way to log a user out. Here’s how:

  1. Open Facebook Messenger app.
  2. Tap your Profile icon at the upper-right.
  3. Scroll down and tap Switch account.

Also, it’s not true that deleting your Facebook Messenger app data will delete your chat history and contacts. These stuff are kept in a remote Facebook server and not in your phone. Deleting app data will therefore not delete them so you can go ahead with it.
