Problem 1: Galaxy S6 shuts down on its own
I just bought my Galaxy S6 less than 1 week ago. I noticed the day after I got it I was at work and my phone read 80%. It said I could not access the Internet without turning on my Wi-Fi. So I clicked on it. Then I had to click on “I Agree,” then instantly my phone powered off and was dead. Today I was at work and decided to turn my phone off while I was working and turn it on on my break. I turned it on and my phone read 97%. I went to the break room which is a 2 minute walk. When I got there, my phone was dead. What can I do to keep my battery from dying in a matter of a split second, to a matter of minutes. — Kim
Solution: Hi Kim. Is this a brand new phone? An issue like this is not supposed to happen in a new device so you should have it replaced right away. There’s a chance that the problem is being caused by a software or app glitch but still, you’re better off if you can have it replaced as early as possible.
If you happened to purchase a pre-owned S6, you may be out of luck. Most of the time, an issue like this boils down to bad hardware so you either have to have the phone repaired or replaced if you can’t fix the issue with a factory reset. Below are the steps on how to factory reset your S6:
- Create a backup of your important files such as photos, videos, contacts etc. You can use Smart Switch for this task.
- Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge.
- Press and hold the Volume Up, Home and Power keys together.
- When the device powers on and displays ‘Power on logo’, release all keys and the Android icon will appear on the screen.
- Wait until the Android Recovery Screen appears after about 30 seconds.
- Using the Volume Down key, highlight the option, ‘wipe data/factory reset’ and press the Power key to select it.
- Press the Volume Down button again until the option ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted and then press the Power key to select it.
- After the reset is complete, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and hit the Power key to restart the phone.
Problem 2: Galaxy S6 Google Play app keeps crashing after installing Android Nougat
Hi. After self-install to Nougat, my unbranded S6 doesn’t work correctly anymore. In particular Home button doesn’t work and block/unblock button works for a few minutes then it becomes useless. The only way to unblock S6 is a soft reset by pressing for 7 seconds block/unblock button and volume down together. I’ve noticed that Google Play appears when accessing camera and asks for settings. but it isn’t stable. It appears, then disappear and appears again…. it’s a mess because it overrides the other applications. And buttons stop working… Can you help me? Anybody did face the same issue? Solution: Hi Ivano. We’re curious what you mean by “unbranded S6”. We’re assuming though that you have a genuine Samsung Galaxy S6 because that’s the only S6 we support here. If you happen to have a fake Galaxy S6, please try to look for solutions elsewhere. We are not familiar with non-genuine Galaxy S6 so there’s very little to nothing that we can give you.
Assuming you have a genuine Samsung phone, the first troubleshooting step that you want to do is cache partition wipe. This will force the phone to delete the current system cache and build a new one.
- Turn off the device.
- Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up key, Home key, and Power key.
- When the phone vibrates, release the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key.
- When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.
- Press the Volume Down key to highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
- Press the Power key to select.
- When the wipe cache partition is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
- Press the Power key to restart the device.
Once you’ve cleared the cache partition, you then want to proceed with clearing the data of the Google Services Framework app. This is a necessary troubleshooting because you’re having an issue with a Google app. Here’s what you need to do:
- Open the Settings menu either through your notification shade (drop-down) or through the Settings app in your app drawer.
- Navigate down to “Apps”. This may be renamed to something like Applications or Application Manager in OEM skinned versions of Android 6 or 7.
- Once in there, look for the Google Services Framework app and tap it.
- You’ll now see a list of stuff that gives you information about the app, including Storage, Permissions, Memory Use, and more. These are all clickable items. You’ll want to click on Storage.
- You should now clearly see the Clear Data and Clear Cache buttons for the application.
- Observe how the phone works for a few hours.
If the issue stays after doing the two procedures above, you must do a factory reset to return all software settings to their defaults. It is important that you observe how the phone behaves after a factory reset. You should let it remain as it is for at least 24 hours. Do not install any app or update during this time. Doing so will help you determine if the issue is being caused by an app, or if it’s something you can’t fix. If you’ll experience the same problem after a factory reset without any apps installed, you should consider repair or replacement. If the problem continues ONLY after installing apps, you should isolate the problematic app and never install it back.
Problem 3: Wet Galaxy S6 won’t charge, won’t boot up
My phone was slightly wet while charging. Dried off, let sit, plugged it back in. Light blue downloading screen came on. Would not charge with original plug in. Did a hard reset. Fixed that, still would not charge with any cord, original or otherwise. Came home, put on wireless. Charger showing charging, but phone’s charging light not red. After all night on wireless charger, now blinks start up screen, but nothing further. Will not boot up. Thank you. — Jennifer
Solution: Hi Jennifer. A Galaxy S6 does not have water-resistance protection like the S7 and S8 so even slight exposure to water can cause damage. If the current problem was not there before you got the phone wet, stop looking for software solutions and simply bring the device to a service center. The cause of the problem is most likely a damaged hardware so there’s no amount of software tweaks that you can do on your end to fix this.
Problem 4: Galaxy S6 edge not turning back on
HI there. My Samsung S6 Edge was sitting on my bedside table this morning, and when I went to check emails while lying in bed, the screen went sideways (as it always does when the phone is not completely upright), and I pushed the home key a few times because the screen seemed to have frozen and I was trying to get it back to the home screen. And then it went black, looked like it was starting to either turn on or off (the Samsung logo came on), then went completely black and won’t turn on and I don’t think it’s charging.
The battery icon with a lightning bolt appears, but no lights are on, and the icon is just grey. I have had it plugged in for a while now, and have tried to doing the soft reboot, etc, but nothing changes. It just seems to have completely crashed. I have plugged it in to the wall and also my laptop, but the same thing happens with both. I’ve only had the phone a few months, and it has been working fine with no problems. Thoughts? — Emily
Solution: Hi Emily. Try leaving the phone connected to the charger a little bit longer, then try to see if you can turn it on to alternate modes. Only then can you attempt to do a software fix. If your phone remains dead and unresponsive, you should have it repaired or replaced.
Below are the steps on how to boot your phone to alternate modes:
Boot in Recovery mode:
- Charge the phone for at least 30 minutes.
- Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key.
- When the Samsung Galaxy S7 shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
- When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds.
- Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
- You can either wipe the cache partition or do a factory reset when in this mode.
Boot in Download Mode:
- Charge the phone for at least 30 minutes.
- Press and then hold the Home and Volume DOWN keys, then press and hold the Power key.
- When the Samsung Galaxy S7 shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume DOWN keys.
- Wait until the Download screen appears.
- If you can boot the phone in download mode but not in other modes, that means that your only way out may be to flash a stock or custom firmware.
- Use Google to look for a guide on how to do it.
Boot in safe mode:
- Charge the phone for at least 30 minutes.
- Press and hold the Power button.
- Once the ‘Samsung Galaxy S7’ logo appears, release the Power key and immediately press and hold the Volume Down button.
- Continue holding the button until the phone finishes rebooting.
- Once you see the text “Safe mode” at the bottom left corner of the screen, release the Volume Down button.
- The only difference of safe mode from normal mode is that the former prevents third party apps from running. If you can boot the phone in safe mode but not in normal mode, uninstall all apps until the issue (that prevents you from booting normally) is eliminated.
Problem 5: Water damaged Galaxy S6 not turning on
I was pushed into a swimming pool of 5 feet and my phone was in my back pocket. While in the water I realized I had my phone so I quickly tried to resurface and place my phone to outside out of the pool before any more water got in. As when I finally got my self out of the water I noticed my phone wouldn’t come on . It stayed in a box of rice a ron i because I wasn’t able to get regular rice, over night bit it still hasn’t come on . It’s it possible for it to still turn on and what can I do. — Reanna
Solution: Hi Reanna. Putting a wet electronic device in a bag of rice won’t do much, especially since the phone’s battery was not removed. In an ideal situation, you are supposed to do the following:
- Turn the device off immediately.
- Remove the battery right away (we know this is not easily doable since your S6 has a non-removable battery pack). Leaving a battery connected to a wet motherboard can short components and lead to permanent damage.
- Dismantle the phone and separate the motherboard from other removable pieces.
- Clean the components with alcohol.
- Dry everything in a bag of rice for a few days.
As you can see, the drying part comes last. Not doing the first four steps would lead to problems so what you did does not really matter at this time. All the five steps mentioned above all constitutes as a “first aid” procedure and not be as permanent fix.
If you want to know if your phone can still be saved, you must let a professional check it. Make sure to send it to a good service center.
Problem 6: Galaxy S6 not charging properly
Hi. I am experiencing a frustrating issue with my Samsung Galaxy S6. Last night my phone died and tried charging it when I got home. When I plugged it into the fast charge adapter the power bar that is displayed when the phone is off immediately jumped to 90%. After about an hour it was still at 90% . I tried to turn on the phone. It would go through the startup cycle to the Samsung Screen and turn off and go back to the power bar at 90%. I have tried different cords and chargers. The very interesting thing is different chargers display different percentages. My car charger this morning started at 20% and actually charged to 75% before I got to work. A non-fast charger starts at 35% and moves up very very slowly. The fast charger starts at 90% and stops at 91%. Have you seen anything like this before? Any suggested solutions? I have tried rebooting, wiping the cache, basically everything you have suggested in all of your other phone not charging posts short of the factory reboot. Thanks. — Matt
Solution: Hi Matt. There may be a software glitch causing the operating system not to detect the true battery level. To check, try calibrating the battery first and see how it goes:
- Use the phone by playing games or doing tasks to hasten power discharge, until the phone turns itself off.
- Turn the phone on again and let it turn itself off.
- Charge the phone without turning it back on.
- Wait until the battery says it fully charged to 100%
- Unplug the charger and turn the phone on.
- If the phone says it’s not 100% anymore, turn it off, plug the charger back in and wait until 100% charge is reached.
- Unplug the charger the turn the phone on again.
- Use the phone until you drain the battery down to 0.
- Repeat the cycle once.
- Observe how the phone charges for a few times.
If battery calibration won’t work, do a factory reset.
Problem 7: Galaxy S6 sound notifications not working right after an update
Since doing the last update on my Galaxy S6, the notification sounds for my calendar only do a 1/4 to 1/2 of the sound. Same problem when someone calls, it might ring once or just a short amount and then stop. But if you look at the phone you can tell it’s still “ringing,” but with no sound. The other thing that happened, is that any video recording I do with sound is beyond “crackling.” I have never dropped my phone, it hasn’t been in or close to water or in the sun. All this happened right after the last update. Any info on how to rectify the situation would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. — Simone
Solution: Hi Simone. Make sure that you do the basic software troubleshooting for update-related problems — cache partition wipe and factory reset.
Once you’ve factory reset the device, make sure that you only install apps you’re 100% sure that’s compatible with the operating system. We assume you only install apps from Google Play Store so you want to check their installation page or contact their developer if you’re not certain. Most popular apps from known companies are most likely compatible so you can skip them. Try to focus your efforts on apps from unknown developers. Keep in mind that not all apps are created equal. It’s up to you whether you install an incompatible or problematic one or not.
Problem 8: Galaxy S6 randomly fails to read SD card
I am having a strange issue where my Samsung Galaxy S6 will not recognize my 128GB micro SD card. It tells me that my SD card is corrupt. It will recognize it sometimes but if I restart my phone after it recognizes it, it goes back to saying its corrupt and I have to restart the process of trying to get it to recognize the card again.
I have put this card in my computer and my computer says the card is fine and I can use it as normal and access everything on it. My phone will recognize all my other micro SD cards except this one. With this card I have to keep reinserting it until my phone recognizes it. Most of the time, I have to let my phone cool down before it recognizes it but not in all cases.
I have been noticing that it’s been getting harder to get my phone to recognize it. I am afraid to reformat the card on my phone because I am afraid I will lose some of the memory space on it. So instead of having 119GB of usable memory, I will lose some of those GB and not have the full 119GB I should have. I don’t know if that would actually happen or not but I do know that if I reformat my card I lose all data on the card and I have backed up everything on the card.
Please help me fix this issue. If there is any additional information you need just let me know Thank you! — Tyler
Solution: Hi Tyler. You know for certain that the problem lies on the SD card so we recommend that you either reformat it, or simply replace it. There’s really nothing much that you can do except these two things.
Problem 9: Galaxy S6 stuck in Samsung logo screen after unrooting
Hello. I need help. My Samsung phone was rooted somehow so I unrooted it thinking that that would solve all my problems. About 24 hours after unrooting it, it seemed to crash, it starts up and then just stays on the Samsung screen with the little blue things bouncing off it.
I have tried every single restart thing, factory reset, all the tricks of the trade on Youtube and nothing has worked. I even sent it to someone to have a look. They tried to put new software on it but that didn’t seem to work. I am at the point of giving up and buying a new phone but the phone was in perfect condition so I am willing to try anything. I feel like I might have some sort of hope with you guys but I’m not too sure. Have you had this problem before? What else can I do? It’s a Samsung Galaxy S6, and the warranty has run out for it. — Ruth
Solution: Hi Ruth. Rooting is basically a modification of Android operating system to give a user access to core and normally not accessible system files. There are a lot of rooting software in the wild so there’s no one-size-fits-all solution for any rooting issue. Unrooting, like rooting, can lead to problems if not done correctly. We don’t know what you did exactly to unroot your device so there’s not much that we can offer. We suggest that you try to flash the bootloader for this device first and see how it works. Below are the general steps on how to flash the bootloader:
- Look for the correct firmware for your phone model and download it. Make sure that select the right one. It should be the same exact firmware that ran previously on your device. We assume that you list down the firmware version somewhere. If you did not take note of it before, there’s a chance that you may pick the wrong one. As you may know now, using an incorrect firmware can cause complications so good luck with that.
- Let’s now say that you have identified the correct firmware. You then want to download it to your computer. The firmware file should have a bunch of files in it like AP_, BL_, CSC_, etc.
- Look for the file that starts with a label BL; this should be the corresponding bootloader file for this firmware. Once you’ve identified the bootloader file, copy it to your computer’s desktop or to any other folder that you can easily access.
- Proceed with the rest of the flashing procedure using the Odin program.
- In Odin, click on the BL tab and make sure to use the bootloader file you’ve identified earlier.
- Now, make sure that the “Device Added” status and its “ID:COM box” has turned blue before hitting the START button. This will initiate the flashing of your phone’s bootloader.
- Restart the phone once the procedure is finished.
NOTE: The steps above may not be the exact steps on how to flash the bootloader on your phone. Flashing instructions can vary by phone and phone model so make sure to do some research first so you’ll have a good guide.
If flashing the bootloader won’t fix the problem, try flashing a stock firmware on your phone.
Problem 10: Google contacts not showing in Galaxy S6 Contacts app
Dear Sir or Madam, Hope you had a nice weekend. I have a problem about my phone Galaxy S6.
Contacts app: The phone’s Contacts app can’t display the contacts from my Google account. It happened 4 days ago. I think all the contacts I entered from the phone Contacts are still there; all the contacts I entered from my Google account are no longer in the phone Contacts app. For example, a number ending 223: this contact is from my Google account, but now it can’t display the name in my phone Contacts app or in the phone Messages app. The name can be displayed before. I have tried Sync again and again, but it always shows it is Synced. If you could kindly help with this issue, it would be very helpful. Many thanks in advance. Best regards. — Yue
Solution: Hi Yue. Try wiping the cache and data of the Contacts app first (make sure to back all your contacts first) and see what happens. If the problem is still there, sign out of your Google account, then sign back in.
If that won’t solve the issue either, do a factory reset.
Problem 11: Galaxy S6 can’t send a reply text
Hi. I have recently acquired a Samsung Galaxy S6 as it is more up-to-date than my iPhone 3. I stayed with the same carrier so just had to put my SIM card in and go through start up. The phone works fine other than it fails when replying to texts. I have gone through your instructions on the S6 including doing a factory reset and have also spoken to my carrier to make sure that my plan is ok. I have also tried the SIM on another Android phone and it worked ok. What I have worked out is that on the S6 I can’t reply to a text or send a text that has a country code in the number. If I drop the country code I can send a text to that number but obviously this is more time consuming than just replying to a text, and also means the text conversation is interrupted. I have also used GSM codes to make sure there are no bars on incoming or outgoing calls or texts. In Australia, the S6 only runs on Lollipop as Marshmallow is not available. Thanks. — Malcolm
Solution: Hi Malcolm. An issue like this must be resolved by your carrier so we’re wondering what they did to help you. Since a factory reset did not fix your issue, the only workaround that we can suggest at this time is that you try another messaging app. If that won’t fix the problem either, talk to your carrier again and let them fix it.
