Galaxy S6 edge has trouble receiving MMS, won’t turn off after an update, other issues

Problem 1: iPhone cannot receive SMS from Galaxy S6

I have a Galaxy S6 and my boyfriend has an iPhone. We’ve never had any issues with receiving texts unless it’s been a service problem but for the past 4 days he has not been receiving my texts. He checked all the iPhone messaging things and even called his service provider, Verizon, but still couldn’t receive anything. I’ve restarted my phone, checked all the settings, checked all updates and he still can’t get them. He can get texts from other people and I can send and receive texts from others. My texts show that they’ve sent and I receive all of his texts. I’m very confused and frustrated and would love it if someone could help! — Deborah

Solution: Hi Deborah. If your S6 shows that your message to your boyfriend has been sent and his iPhone does not receive it, the problem is most probably on side and not yours.

Below are the things that he should check on his end to try and fix the issue:

  1. Ensure that his inbox is not full by deleting some messages.
  2. Call Barring should not be active. He must ensure that your number is not blocked in his phone for some reason.
  3. Check his spam or deleted items inbox to see if your messages are being diverted there.
  4. Airplane or Flight Mode is not on.
  5. Ensure that the sender’s number (your number registered on his phone) is in correct format. He should delete and add your number again as needed.
  6. Should try inserting his SIM card in another phone to see if it can receive your SMS (only applies if he is on a GSM network).
  7. Try switching to 2G if he is on LTE or 3G networks.
  8. Reset his iPhone’s network settings.

If the problem remains after doing the above steps, he should contact his carrier for support.

Problem 2: Galaxy S6 edge has trouble receiving MMS

Hi. I have a Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge which had an OS update about 3 weeks ago. Since then I’ve had trouble receiving MMS messages. I’ll see part of it in my text feed but when I click “VIEW ALL” I only get a blank screen. If the message is a Group Message I have no problems viewing the entire thing when I click VIEW ALL but when it comes from only 1 person is when I have the issue. I’ve tried turning off & then on again the Mobile Data but that makes no difference. I’ve tried emailing the text to myself but that results in just a blank email. This is so frustrating, it was fine before I took the system update. Any help would be greatly appreciated! — Knenglish1225

Solution: Hi Knenglish1225. This can be caused by a messaging app bug so the first thing that you want to do is to clear its cache and data. Follow these steps:

  1. Open the Settings menu either through your notification shade (drop-down) or through the Settings app in your app drawer.
  2. Navigate down to “Apps”. This may be renamed to something like Applications or Application Manager in OEM skinned versions of Android 6 or 7.
  3. Once in there, click on an application.
  4. You’ll now see a list of stuff that gives you information about the app, including Storage, Permissions, Memory Use, and more. These are all clickable items. You’ll want to click on Storage.
  5. You should now clearly see the Clear Data and Clear Cache buttons for the application.

If wiping the messaging app’s cache and data won’t help, do a factory reset. This will revert all software settings to their defaults, effectively eliminating possible software bug that may have developed after an update. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Create a backup of your important files such as photos, videos, contacts etc. You can use Smart Switch for this task.
  2. Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge.
  3. Press and hold the Volume Up, Home and Power keys together.
  4. When the device powers on and displays ‘Power on logo’, release all keys and the Android icon will appear on the screen.
  5. Wait until the Android Recovery Screen appears after about 30 seconds.
  6. Using the Volume Down key, highlight the option, ‘wipe data/factory reset’ and press the Power key to select it.
  7. Press the Volume Down button again until the option ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted and then press the Power key to select it.
  8. After the reset is complete, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and hit the Power key to restart the phone.

If the problem stays even after a factory reset, contact your carrier and let them know about it.

Problem 3: Galaxy S6 won’t turn off after an update

Hello. I currently have a Galaxy S6 Active SM-G890A. After a recent update it has prevented my phone from booting up correctly. The SAMSUNG logo seems to have locked its self on the screen. There are no signs of it rebooting, unless I try a soft restart, via volume down and power.

The interesting thing here is, I cannot manually shut down the phone by holding down the power button. Looks like an infinite loop occurring here. If only I can power off the phone, I can access the cache settings and try clearing out the data. Any recommendations here?

It seems like I’ve exhausted all testing scenarios I found online. Last bet, is to open up a support ticket with ATT. I’m going to try letting the battery drain, to see if I can start up the phone manually. Thanks. — Peter

Solution: Hi Peter. If your S6 won’t turn off if you press the Power button, then your only choice would be to wait for the battery to drain. Once that’s done, you can then try to turn back on to Recovery mode or other alternate modes so you can do follow up troubleshooting.

Below are the steps on how to start an S6 to alternate modes and the things that you can do after doing each one:

Boot in Recovery mode:

  1. Charge the phone for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Samsung Galaxy S7 shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
  4. When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds.
  5. Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  6. You can either wipe the cache partition or do a factory reset when in this mode.

Boot in Download Mode:

  1. Charge the phone for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Press and then hold the Home and Volume DOWN keys, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Samsung Galaxy S7 shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume DOWN keys.
  4. Wait until the Download screen appears.
  5. If you can boot the phone in download mode but not in other modes, that means that your only way out may be to flash a stock or custom firmware.
  6. Use Google to look for a guide on how to do it.

Boot in safe mode:

  1. Charge the phone for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Press and hold the Power button.
  3. Once the ‘Samsung Galaxy S7’ logo appears, release the Power key and immediately press and hold the Volume Down button.
  4. Continue holding the button until the phone finishes rebooting.
  5. Once you see the text “Safe mode” at the bottom left corner of the screen, release the Volume Down button.
  6. The only difference of safe mode from normal mode is that the former prevents third party apps from running. If you can boot the phone in safe mode but not in normal mode, uninstall all apps until the issue (that prevents you from booting normally) is eliminated.

Problem 4: Galaxy S6 edge heats up when charging and won’t turn on

i have Samsung S6 edge. I used this phone for more than 12 months with no problems. But suddenly its screen turned off automatically and did not restart . I connect power cable and after 15 minutes i press and hold Volume down button and power button simultaneously. it restarted. I learned to do it from your trouble shooting subscription page. But after a week, again my phone screen turned off itself and i tried pressing and holding volume down and power button as before. it did not work this time.

i tried other ways too by pressing and holding vol up, down , power and home keys its did not response at all . when i call my number (sim) from another phone it says the number you are calling is turned off. Phone heats up after power cable is plug in . Please find and fix my problem. You know s6 edge cost price is high and i cannot buy such an expensive phone again and again. — Narayan

Solution: Hi Narayan. If the phone no longer turns on and heats up when it’s connected to a charger, there must be a hardware problem causing it. Kindly contact Samsung or your carrier so you can send it in for repair or replacement.

Problem 5: Water damaged Galaxy S6 Active won’t turn on

I think I am really screwed. The Galaxy S6 Active is not what I have hoped. The phone fell from my car door about 1.5 feet, not far at all and the screen cracked. By placing a cover on it, I have been able to use it without issue for about a year.  About 3 weeks ago, my pillow hit the glass of water on the night stand on to the phone. I quickly wiped it off, however since then the phone will power on, you see the start up screen, then it goes black.

I have been able to get the Android Screen and Wipe Cache, and Reset to Factory defaults. it applies the reset but never completes and goes to a black screen. I have downloaded software and something is up with the USB connection and it is never recognized by my computer.  Even with the USB drivers installed.  I am really stuck and do not know what I can do next?  any ideas, even telling me to give up is a direction. I had the phone at uBreakiFix and they dehumidified it for 24 hours which did not help. — Craig

Solution: Hi Craig. A Galaxy S6 Active is supposed to be water-resistant so spilling some water over it should not have done some damage. However, since the screen is cracked, the phone’s water resistance may have been compromised. If the phone was working fine before you exposed it to water, then it’s safe to assume that you may have a hardware problem at hand. The best course of action right now is to have the phone examined by an independent service center so they can advise you whether repair will fix the problem or not.

Problem 6: Galaxy S6 LED light not turning on, screen is black

I updated my phone the other day, and everything seemed to be okay. I plugged my phone in overnight to charge. This morning, I woke up to see a green screen. I was watching a YouTube tutorial on how to fix it, and started doing a hard reboot (pressed the volume, home, and power buttons at the same time for 20 seconds) but instead of booting back up, the screen simply went black. For a while, when I tried to turn it back on or reboot it, the screen would still be black with the light flashing blue, then red, then after leaving it in the charger green, and now it is just black, as if the phone is off. Nothing I do will turn the phone back on. Please help. — Sasgandurra

Solution: Hi Sasgandurra. If the LED light indicator no longer works, and the phone no longer vibrates when you try to turn it back on, that’s a sign that your S6 is no longer turning on. It’s not just a screen problem so you need to have an expert look at the hardware so you’ll know if the phone can still be repaired or not.

Otherwise, simply have the phone replaced.

Problem #7: Galaxy S6 edge is dead and won’t turn on

Hi, guys! I have a Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge from a year and it behaves weird the last few months.

  1. It all started with random restarting out of nowhere, which led to a huge battery consuming in no time and a heating device. It was happening mostly during charging, usually 5-6 times restarting in a row, and sometimes during nights. Once in a while it wasn’t able to load the display with the apps and all started all over again with a white-bluish LED light constantly glowing.
  2. What I did during such issues was holding the Home button along with the Volume buttons and the Power button at once. of course removing the charger before that. When there was not glowing light the device restarting went normally and worked correctly. After some time, there was a software update that popped up and after this the device worked properly for weeks without issues that made me think it struggled with installing a certain updates. But then again would perform the mentioned problems.
  3. There were times when I was surfing through an app and the device would restart all of a sudden; or is next to me on the desk and would do this without being touched.
  4. I managed to handle the situation till yesterday when I tried to charge it (always with the original charger which is like new), after leaving it for few days powerless. The display showed the battery icon charging and after a while I tried to turn on the device. The white-blueish glow went on and the logo appeared on the screen but only till that point. I pressed the power button and held it for few seconds without an effect. Then I removed the charge cable and pressed all buttons at once and the device went off, leaving the white-blueish LED glowing permanently. I plugged the charger again and left the device like that. In the morning, the device was off without indicator of life. I pressed and held the Power button but to no avail. Then I pressed and hold all buttons at once and nothing happened. Now it just won’t charge. When I plug it in, it won’t respond. The usual charging icon won’t display and the LED won’t light up. Can you help / guide me, please?

Solution: Hi Jennykircheva. We appreciate the details you provide here. Sadly, everything you describe appear to confirm our suspicion that bad hardware is to blame here. There’s no way for us to know exactly what’s causing the problem but it can only be one of the following:

  • bad battery
  • malfunctioning charging port
  • unknown motherboard issue

If the phone is completely dead, you’ll be unable to boot it back, which also means there’s no software troubleshooting that you can do on your end. To fix the problem, you must have it checked by a trained phone technician.

Problem 8: Galaxy S6 bluetooth problem with car kit after an update

Hi. I am having a problem playing media through Bluetooth in car and wonder if you can help. I have a Galaxy S6 and am trying to listen to podcasts in my 2015 Peugeot. I can make / receive calls ok through Bluetooth but cannot play media. Devices pair ok. Media audio /call audio / contacts sharing enabled. If I am playing a podcast through the phone speaker and then turn on the car the podcast seems like it is continuing to play (as it has not stopped on phone) but I cannot hear it either through phone or car stereo. The car radio continues to play though. I used to be able to listen to podcasts etc through Bluetooth so it may have been a changed setting or update that has caused this but I haven’t been able to figure it out. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks — Fiona

Solution: Hi Fiona. A lot of times, problems between a smartphone and a Bluetooth car kit follows an update of a phone. This doesn’t mean though that the newly updated system is to blame. Most of the time, the newly updated smartphone simply becomes incompatible with the older Bluetooth version in a car kit. If you haven’t tried it yet, contact your Bluetooth car kit’s maker or auto maker to see if there’s a way to update the software of car kit. This usually fixes Bluetooth problems between the two devices.

If you want to troubleshoot the two devices before contacting the car kit’s maker or the car maker, start with deleting the pairings first. Once the pairings have been cleared, factory reset both the phone and car kit before pairing them back.
