Problem #1: Galaxy Note 5 plays music or video but stops in the middle

Hello. I purchased a Galaxy Note 5 from Sprint a month ago. The phone has been working fine until a couple days ago. I’m listening to tune in radio and it just stopped playing. I pressed play, same thing. I tried watching a video on You tube, same issue. I even went on Facebook to watch a Facebook live, I have the same issue it just stop. Netflix same. I Google media issue with galaxy note 5 but I cannot find a solution. Can someone help me. — Fabienne

Solution: Hi Fabienne. There may be a software bug that affects a number of apps so the first thing that you can do here is to wipe the cache partition. This procedure will force the phone to create a new system cache after deleting the old one. Sometimes, installation of new Android update or apps can corrupt the system cache, which in turn will result to erratic app behaviors. If you haven’t tried it before, here’s how you do it:

  1. Turn off the Galaxy Note 4 completely.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up and the Home keys together, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Note 4 vibrates, release both the Home and Power keys but continue holding the Volume Up key.
  4. When the Android System Recovery shows on the screen, release the Vol Up key.
  5. Using the Volume Down key, highlight the option ‘wipe cache partition’ and press the Power key to select it.
  6. When the wiping of the cache partition is finished, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and hit the power key.

It will take some time for the phone to build the system cache so all you need to do is simply do the things you always do in your phone. If the problem remains after wiping the cache partition, the next troubleshooting step is to see if a third party app is causing the problem. This is done by observing the phone in safe mode. Under this mode, all third party apps and services will be prevented from loading. If the issue won’t occur, that’s a sign that one of the third party apps is causing the problem. To fix the issue, you must uninstall apps until you’ve observed that the issue disappears.

Below are the steps on how to boot your phone to safe mode:

  1. Turn off the phone completely.
  2. Press and hold the Power key and the Volume Down key.
  3. When the phone starts to boot, release the Power key but continue holding the Volume Down key until the phone finished restarting.
  4. Safe mode will be display at the lower left corner; you may release the Volume Down key now.

If nothing changes and the problem remains even when your Note 5 runs in safe mode, you should do the more drastic factory reset. Here’s how:

  1. Create a backup of your important files such as photos, videos, contacts etc. You can use Smart Switch for this task.
  2. Turn off the Galaxy Note 4 completely.
  3. Press and hold the Volume Up and the Home keys together, then press and hold the Power key.
  4. When the Note 4 vibrates, release both the Home and Power keys but continue holding the Volume Up key.
  5. When the Android System Recovery shows on the screen, release the Volume Up key.
  6. Using the Volume Down key, highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’ and press the Power key to select it.
  7. Now highlight ‘Yes — delete all user data’ using the Volume Down key and press the Power key to begin the reset.
  8. When the master reset is complete, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and hit the Power key.
  9. The Note 4 will restart but it will be longer than usual. When it reaches the Home screen, then begin your setup.

Problem #2: Galaxy Note 5 turns off if battery reaches 90%

I have done most of all the solutions you have on the trouble shooting page. The only thing I have not done is ensure all of my apps are updated. I have wiped the cache partition, performed factory reset and have tried letting phone charge to 100% run down charge for few days now. The issue I am still seeing is the phone operates great at 100%. Once the phone reaches 90%, it shuts off and battery shows zero. Please help! This is driving me nuts trying to figure out. I would go to Verizon but they would simply try and sell another device. Thanks in advance. — Bkburke789

Solution: Hi Bkburke789. There are two software troubleshooting steps that we suggest for you in this case — battery recalibration and factory reset. If nothing will work after you do them, you should send the phone in for repair or replacement as it means the problem is beyond your ability to fix.

These are the steps on how recalibrate your battery:

  1. Use the phone by playing games or doing tasks to hasten power discharge, until the phone turns itself off.
  2. Turn the phone on again and let it turn itself off.
  3. Charge the phone without turning it back on.
  4. Wait until the battery says it fully charged to 100%
  5. Unplug the charger and turn the phone on.
  6. If the phone says it’s not 100% anymore, turn it off, plug the charger back in and wait until 100% charge is reached.
  7. Unplug the charger the turn the phone on again.
  8. Use the phone until you drain the battery down to 0.
  9. Repeat the cycle once.

Problem #3: Galaxy Note 5 screen goes green, won’t charge

I have Samsung Galaxy Note 5. Recently, half of the screen goes green and after some time the phone stopped charging. I thought it would be charger but then I changed it, still it didn’t work. I turned it into safe mode still it was the same. I switched off the phone then it charges but when i switch on the phone it doesn’t charge. I thought there is some software issue with the phone. I updated my phone and my apps because they were on manual update and I barely update them. For now it started charging even when the phone was on but it was slow. I have 3.0 USB which used to charge the phone within 1hrs up to 100% now takes whole day maximum 8 hours. After that I tried connecting it to the computer, it starts charging but it doesn’t connect with the computer as a media. The only reason so far I did not reset my phone is that I have Whatsapp on my old number which doesn’t work in Canada but i don’t want to lose that account. I went to a repair shop. They advised me to first change the battery, if it is still the same then change the charging port and if still the same then to buy a new phone because it might be motherboard problem. Please suggest me what should I do. I don’t wanna waste money onto this phone if at the end I might have to buy a new phone. — Aman

Solution: Hi Aman. Any screen discoloration is usually caused by bad hardware so this alone can require repair. That your phone is also experiencing charging problems should be reason enough to push you for repair. There’s no amount of software hack or troubleshooting that you can do on your end to fix them.

The usual Android troubleshooting progression starts with doing all relevant software fixes, which includes the following (in this order):

  1. wiping the cache partition
  2. observing in safe mode
  3. installing updates and making sure all apps are updated
  4. factory reset

We know it’s important for you not lose access to your Whatsapp account but you’ll still lose it any way should you go ahead with repair. There’s no “magic” or advanced software troubleshooting or tricks that we can give you to fix the problem. If your phone suffered any physical damage like from an accidental drop or water exposure, there’s no guarantee that repair or replacement of parts will fix the issue at all. You either have to risk paying for an unguaranteed repair or buying a new phone.

Problem #4:Galaxy Note 5 won’t charge after repair

Phone wont charge. Battery keeps saying temperature too low. Swapped OEM 3000 mah Samsung battery with 3200 mah battery which caused that message to pop up because before it said battery was overheating. All this took place after switching out the charging port, LCD digitizer screen, camera lens and rear glass on Note 5. Back button and double square button won’t work either. — Efraino87

Solution: Hi Efraino87. You clearly have a botched repair here so the only solution for you is to ensure that the repair is done properly. If you were the one who fixed the phone initially, let someone with proper training and expertise do the repair for you instead (if you can convince them to do the repair of course). Technicians won’t often agree to do repair following a failed repair by someone so it may be a hard sell for you. The best that you can do is to assemble the phone as best as you can and refrain from mentioning you tried to repair the phone before.

Although we’ve repeated this several times before, we want to let you know that we don’t provide hardware troubleshooting and diagnostics.

Problem #5: Galaxy Note 5 sound volume lowers or mutes when playing music

Hi. When I’m listening to audio (Google Play Music, Audible, Youtube, anything), my sound will nearly mute (about 10% volume) constantly for anywhere from 2-30 seconds. The only temporary fix is to manually pause/play but then it happens again almost right away. Have tried closing all apps and everything i could find in settings. I drive 8 hours a day sometimes and this is maddening. Can’t figure out the problem. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks. — Travis

Solution: Hi Travis. Since this happens to multiple apps, wiping individual app cache and data won’t work. You want instead to just delete all data for all apps and see how it works afterwards. Here’s how to do that:

  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Tap Device maintenance.
  3. Tap Storage.
  4. Tap More options on the upper right hand part of the screen (three-dot icon).
  5. Tap Storage settings.
  6. Tap Cached data.

If wiping all cached data won’t help, try to observe the phone in safe mode while playing music. There may be a third party app causing the problem. Refer to the steps on how to boot your Note 5 to safe mode.

Finally, don’t hesitate to do a factory reset if the problem stays. An issue like this is almost always caused by a software bug so factory reset should take care of it.

Problem #6: Galaxy Note 5 notifications not working

I have a Galaxy Note 5. For no apparent reason notifications do not come through; the phone doesn’t ring when a call comes through and notification sounds do not sound either. I’ve gotten into the habit of checking to make sure notifications are set to sound, but at some point they just stop. I have to restart my phone and then the notifications will start up again. Why is this happening? — Gaudiellom

Solution: Hi Gaudiellom. Erratic notification behavior is almost always caused by a software bug. Unfortunately, there’s no way to tell why such bug develops so all you can do is to address it when it becomes an annoyance. To fix your problem, you should do the usual software troubleshooting such as the ones we recommend for Travis above. Try to wipe the cache partition first, then delete the cached data for all apps if nothing positive comes out.

An important thing that you must do is to see how notifications work when the phone is booted to safe mode. Be sure to start the phone in safe mode for at least 24 hours so you’ll notice any difference. If there’s no change at all, factory reset your Note 5.

Problem #7: Google Play Music app keeps running even when it’s not being used in Galaxy Note 5

Since the most recent update I did on 4/13/17, every now and again my usage manager widget says I have 1 app running. Every time I open it the only app running is Music. The problem is that I have never used the Music app and I have no idea why it is randomly running in the background. Usage Manager says it has used Foreground data, but this shouldn’t be the case if I have never open the app, yes? It’s just simply annoying and I don’t understand why this is happening. Any insight will be greatly appreciated. — Kyle

Solution: Hi Kyle. If you’re referring to the pre-installed Google Play Music app, you can simply disable it so it stays off and stops running. Here’s how:

  1. Open the Settings menu either through your notification shade (drop-down) or through the Settings app in your app drawer.
  2. Navigate down to “Apps”. This may be renamed to something like Applications or Application Manager in OEM skinned versions of Android 6.0.
  3. Once in there, look for Google Play Music app and tap it.
  4. You’ll now see a list of stuff that gives you information about the app, including Disable, Force Stop, Storage, Permissions, Memory Use, and more. These are all clickable items. You’ll want to click on Force Stop first.

Observe the phone for a day and see if that will stop Play Music from running. If not, go back under Applications and hit Disable.

Problem #8: How to set up Galaxy Note 5 notifications

I did a update on my Note 5 last night, EVERYTHING changed. The biggest change that I don’t like is the pop up notification now. I can’t turn them off. before I could turn them off and leave the sound and vibration on so that I know that a message is coming in. Can you please guide me? I’ve tried everything. it’s annoying to keep seeing that pop from Whatsapp and other messaging services when you’re doing something else on your phone. I’ve turned off Whatsapp pop notification but still it’s not working. Please guide me with this. — Anokhipreeti

Solution: Hi Anokhipreeti. With Android Nougat (Android 7), customizing notifications has become even easier for users so we don’t know if we understand your problem exactly. When you go under Settings>Notifications, you’ll immediately be given the option to either block All apps or selected ones only. It’s up to you how you go about it. For example, if you want to block some app notifications only, you can simply slide the All apps slider to the right to allow all apps to notify you. After that, you can go over the list of apps and slide the slider to the left for those ones you don’t want to receive notifications from.

Alternatively, you can tap on ADVANCED at the top right corner screen so you’ll have the option to customize how you receive notification for a particular app. For example, if you want to continue to receive notifications for Whatsapp app but only silently, you can do it here.

Just try to play around with the Notification settings on your phone a little bit and you’ll easily get a hang of it.

Problem #9: Galaxy Note 5 makes sound notification around 1 AM or 2 AM

This is the second time that I am aware of that my phone sounded a notification (a weird sound, not my normal notification sound) without any notification. I checked that I did not select to be reminded of notifications. That was off. The noise seems to come around 1 or 2am. The noise happened while I was running Marshmallow and now that I am running Nougat, the noise is still present. I’m starting to think I’m bugged! Please help! — Mandy

Solution: Hi Mandy. It’s difficult for us to figure out what that noise is if we don’t listen to it first. If possible, try to capture the sound first using another device and contact us again with the audio attachment so we can help you.

Keep in mind that a Samsung device can produce sounds  for a variety of reasons and each of them does not necessarily be accompanied by a notification or message.

Items such as below can produce sounds in your Galaxy Note 5:

  • Music, video, games and other media
  • Ringtone
  • Notifications
  • System

Sound notifications can also be produced by apps. If you suspect that your phone may be compromised, do a factory reset to remove all apps and updates and observe the phone for a few days without installing anything — apps or updates. Absence of the mysterious sound though does not necessarily mean you’re actually bugged. Again, it may be caused by one of your apps or by the system.

If you are fond of installing apps without checking the reputation of their developers, it’s high time that change your attitude. Malicious software or malware in Android are usually transmitted via apps so if you are not careful with what app you install, you only have yourself to blame. Try to stick to mainstream or official apps. Avoid installing games or anything from unknown publishers.

  1. Hi, My Note 5 has recently been playing up with sound issues. Quite often now if the sound is on, I don’t receive a noise for calls, texts, emails, alarms etc. It is silent for all these. If I restart the phone then it works again. Damn annoying when this occurs 🙁
    I usually mute the phone by using the drop down menu at the top.
    Can you please assist?
