Galaxy J7 Prime update issue: text notifications keep showing after they have been turned off

Many #GalaxyJ7 and #GalaxyJ7Primes have now been upgraded to Android Nougat and as usual, many post-update issues are starting to bother users. One such issues is the one we want to address in this post: text notifications keep showing after they have been turned off. A great example of what’s happening to many users are described in one of the cases below so hopefully our suggestions will be useful to our community.

Problem #1: Galaxy J7 Prime text message notifications keep showing after it’s been turned off

Ok I have a Samsung J7 prime. I have had it since Dec. I got an update for it a couple of weeks ago and now my text messages aren’t working correctly. I have stopped notifications altogether but my texts still come up in a large window on my phone even when that feature is turned off. And everytime I get a text message my phone lags really bad and sometimes the screen goes black and it lags and cancels out any app I’m on. So anytime someone texts me I have a large text window in my face messing with and stopping my apps. I have tried multiple ways to correct it. Going into the text settings and turning off the notifications completely doesn’t help the issue. Resetting the the phone in any way doesn’t help either. I downloaded a texting app and completely turned off my messages on my phone but that doesn’t help either. Window still comes up even though notifications are shut off. Please help. I don’t know what’s going on and know it has something to do with the update. I can’t even text now and that’s not good. I should be able to text on my phone and not have all this going on. I wouldn’t have got the update if I had known it was gonna be this much trouble. Something is definitely messed up with it. I appreciate any help you guys can give me!! Thanks! — Heather

Solution: Hi Heather. We don’t know if we understand what you mean exactly by “a large window” but with Android Nougat, your text message notification should naturally be displayed in a big pop-up window. This only occurs though if you enabled notifications for your messaging app. If you don’t want to receive any text message notification, here’s what you need to do:

  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Tap Notifications.
  3. Tap ADVANCED at the upper right.
  4. Look for the messaging app you’re using and tap it. For troubleshooting purposes, we’re using Samsung’s own Messages app.
  5. If you don’t want to receive notifications for your text messages at all, move the slider for Allow notifications to the left. This will prevent your device from showing text message pop-ups.

If you also don’t want to get text message notifications when your device’s screen is locked, tap On lock screen option and select Do not show notifications.

If you’ve already tried the steps above before contacting us, then there must be a problem with  your J7 notifications.

Wipe the cache partition

If you’re positive that the issue started after you installed Android update, the next good thing for you to do is to clear the cache partition. Doing so will force the device to delete the system cache. Android uses the system cache to load apps efficiently but sometimes, problems can occur when this cache gets corrupted after an update. Ideally, you’re supposed to clear the system cache regularly, like once every month to minimize chances of bugs from developing. To clear the cache partition, here are the steps:

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the device logo screen displays, release only the Power key
  4. When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  5. Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  6. Press the Power key to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key to highlight ‘yes’ and press the Power key to select.
  8. When the wipe cache partition is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  9. Press the Power key to restart the device.

Reset all app preferences

Sometimes, new Android updates means old app and services settings may be changed as well. If you have apps that suddenly find themselves unable to work properly after these changes, bugs can occur. To see if you can fix the issue without doing a more drastic solution via factory reset, consider resetting all app preferences next. Resetting app preferences will have the following effects:

  • re-enables previously disabled apps and services
  • resets default apps for actions
  • turns off background data restrictions for apps
  • return app permissions to their defaults
  • unblock app notifications

To reset app preferences on your S9:

  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Tap Apps.
  3. Tap More settings (three-dot) icon at the upper right.
  4. Tap Reset app preferences.

Clean up the phone with factory reset

Should wiping the cache partition and resetting all app preferences won’t change anything, try starting anew, now that you’re running an updated operating system. You can do that by doing a factory reset. This procedure ensure that there’s nothing left unchanged on the software side. All the issues you mention should not be there in the first place and factory reset ensures that the system works as expected. To factory reset your J7 Prime:

  1. Back up data on the internal memory. If you have signed into a Google account on the device, you have activated Anti-theft and will need your Google credentials to finish the Master reset.
  2. Turn off the device.
  3. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key, then press and hold the Power key.
  4. When the device logo screen displays, release only the Power key
  5. When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  6. Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
  7. Press Power button to select.
  8. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  9. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  10. When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  11. Press the Power key to restart the device.

Problem #2: Verizon Galaxy J7 text messages and calling not randomly stops working on Straight Talk

I’ve had a Galaxy J7 for about 2 months now. The provider is Verizon and I have a straight talk plan. I’ve never had any problems with data. But my service has been inconsistent. For the first month I would never be able to text or call but occasionally I would get all of my texts at once. So randomly for just about 2 or 3 seconds I would actually be able to receive texts and calls. And I’d also like to mention that I’ve always had four bars when trying to call or text. So I thought it might have been my APN settings and I tried to change those only to find out that it’s all great out and there’s absolutely no way I can add delete or change my APN settings. I don’t even know if the problem is necessarily tied to my APN settings that was just another issue that I experienced. — Jamesalexvanbibber

Solution: Hi Jamesalexvanbibber. We don’t think it’s an APN issue at all. If it is, you should have mobile data connection problems as well and not just texting and calling. Changing the APN settings won’t affect texting and voice calling functionalities so stop tinkering with it. Based on how you describe your issue, the problem is most likely caused by either of these items:

  • software incompatibility or glitch
  • network incompatibility or glitch

Keep in mind that smartphones, including the one you’re using right now, usually run carrier-specific firmware builds. For example, your J7 must be running a Verizon firmware and not that of Straight Talk’s. That can be problematic in some ways since the software may not run as intended when used in a different network. Even if the hardware and its radio is fully compatible with your current network (Straight Talk), a Verizon firmware not be so. There are many factors that should be considered, especially highly technical ones that we won’t discuss but generally, they all belong to the software or firmware aspect. Try to work with Straight Talk technical support team to ensure that there are no service interruptions that might affect the area you’re in first. If they are 100% positive that their services are up and running while you’re having these weird issues, then you know you have a software issue. Unfortunately, there may not be much that you can do about it since problems of these type are code-related. This means that the way your device is programmed is simply not compatible or problematic to work consistently with Straight Talk’s system.
