Problem 1: Galaxy J5 with cracked screen keeps booting on its own
My Samsung Galaxy J5 that has a cracked front glass and a cracked digitizer replaced with a OEM White Lens LCD Monitor Display + Touch Screen Digitizer + Face Plate. It worked for about 3hrs and it started shutting down and booting up. So I took the battery out for a while. As soon as battery touches battery contacts the battery starting a 2 second boot up until you see the Samsung logo and shut off and then it would go through this process twice. When it stops, I would press the power button and I would get no response. So I removed the battery over and over. It keeps doing the same thing. I’ve tried factory reset; doesn’t work. What should I do? — Mike
Solution: Hi Mike. First of all, we want to emphasize the fact that your phone has suffered physical damage. While the most obvious cosmetic damage may be the screen, unnecessary shock due to the impact may have also damaged other components resulting to the symptoms you’re experiencing right now.
Secondly, your phone has already been touched by someone (you or another person) during repair, which means that the repair may had been substandard. If you did the repair yourself, you must let someone with more experience or expertise check the hardware. If it was fixed by a technician, bring the phone back to him/her and be sure to mention the problem in detail.
And thirdly, we want to tell our readers again that we don’t provide hardware troubleshooting and diagnostics. Repair requires that a technician physically check the phone first. Since we can’t obviously do that, let someone who does repair for a living do the task for you. Fixing a broken phone does not only mean parts replacement. It also requires diagnostics to identify why symptoms show. In other words, there’s a need to identify the problem first in order to apply the most effective approach for a fix. The lack of understanding the true problem is usually the main reason why amateurs end up damaging the device further.
And finally, there’s no amount of software troubleshooting that you can do to fix a physically broken device. That’s why nothing happened after a factory reset. You clearly have a badly damaged phone so you need a trained technician to check it first so you’ll be advised properly. If you’re lucky and the damage is minimal, replacing the said part may bring the phone back to its working order. Otherwise, simply consider replacing the phone.
Problem 2: Galaxy J5 stuck in Samsung logo screen
My girlfriend’s Samsung J5 will only show the wallpaper background of the phone after it is powered down and started back up. any restart will do this. The only way to use the phone after this happens is to factory reset the device. Once the device is restored to factory, you could shut it down or let it run out of power and when turned back on, it’ll again only display the phone’s wallpaper and that’s it without any new apps installed. Straight from factory reset to finish then restart it does this.
I have looked for solutions but I’m stumped. I appreciate any help you can provide. Thank you for your time so very much! It is very frustrating to have to worry that her phone shuts down then we have to reset again. — Billy Ortiz
Solution: Hi Billy. If by “wallpaper background” you mean the Samsung logo screen, then the phone’s bootloader may be corrupted. A corrupted bootloader usually result to Android failing to load, giving the impression that the phone freezing or not responding. Since a user can’t do anything once the phone has become stuck in the Samsung logo screen, the only way out is by turning off the phone by removing the battery. Keep in mind that the more you do this cycle, the higher the chance that the internal storage device will become corrupted as well. This can then lead to permanent hardware failure as the sectors in the storage device that keeps critical operating system files become corrupted. In other words, everytime the system tries to access the portion of the storage device where Android resides, it returns an error, which in turn also prevents the phone from booting up properly.
To see if you can fix the issue at your level, try to reflash the bootloader. If you’re successful, then you can also flash the firmware afterwards. Below are the general steps on how to flash a bootloader. Exact steps may be slightly different for your phone model so be sure to consult other guides.
- Look for the correct firmware for your phone model and download it. Make sure that you select the right one. It should be the same exact firmware that ran previously on your device. We assume that you list down the firmware version somewhere. If you did not take note of it before, there’s a chance that you may pick the wrong one. As you may know now, using an incorrect firmware can cause complications so good luck with that.
- Let’s now say that you have identified the correct firmware. You then want to download it to your computer. The firmware file should have a bunch of files in it like AP_, BL_, CSC_, etc.
- Look for the file that starts with a label BL; this should be the corresponding bootloader file for this firmware. Once you’ve identified the bootloader file, copy it to your computer’s desktop or to any other folder that you can easily access.
- Proceed with the rest of the flashing procedure using the Odin program.
- In Odin, click on the BL tab and make sure to use the bootloader file you’ve identified earlier.
- Now, make sure that the “Device Added” status and its “ID:COM box” has turned blue before hitting the START button. This will initiate the flashing of your phone’s bootloader.
- Restart the phone once the procedure is finished.
Remember, there’s only so much that you can do for this issue. If reflashing the bootloader and/or firmware won’t work, you should consider contacting Samsung for a possible repair.
Problem 3: Galaxy J5 won’t charge properly, slow charging
Hey. I have a Samsung J5 and only have had it for about 4 months. The phone suddenly stop charging and I try a number of chargers on it and it still doesn’t work. I have also try it from laptops to see if that would work but nothing. But when I turn the phone off, it charges but doesn’t show the battery percentage increasing. it just shows a lightning symbol. sometimes the phone charges when on when it is sitting flat but after a while it stops. The battery takes very long to charge roughly — 10-15% every hour. The battery also drains far faster after it is charged. The phone is on Android version 6.0.1. — Colm Mc Nabb
Solution: Hi Colm. Since you’ve already tried different chargers as well as plugged it in to a laptop, the other troubleshooting steps that you can do is to perform an ocular inspection of the charging port and to do the other basic software troubleshooting.
Check the charging port for lint or debris
We don’t expect much from this troubleshooting step but it’s nevertheless important for this case. In some cases, a dirty charging port or the presence of dirt or debris can prevent the charging cable from making good contact with the pins inside. Also, if one of the pins is bent or damaged, charging may be erratic. If possible, try to use a form of magnification to inspect the port inside. If you see dirt or foreign object inside, avoid sticking anything to it. Instead, use a can of compressed air to dislodge the debris and see if charging works inside.
If there’s a damaged pin, be sure to let a professional replace the charging port for you.
Restart to Safe mode
To see if a third party app is causing the system to charge properly, bring the phone to safe mode and charge. Here’s how:
- Turn your Galaxy J5 off.
- Press and hold both the Volume Down button and the Power key.
- When the Samsung logo displays, release the Power key but continue holding down the Volume Down button.
- Allow the phone to start up while holding down the Volume Down button; it may take a few seconds to complete.
- When the phone reaches the home screen and you can see “Safe mode” in the lower left corner of the screen, then it’s successful. Otherwise, repeat the steps from the top.
Remember, safe mode blocks third party apps and services only. It won’t tell you what app may be problematic. If your phone charges fine when it’s on safe mode and you want to identify what app is causing the problem, you must use the method of elimination. Start by uninstalling an app, then observe how charging works. Repeat the same cycle for all apps until you’ve identified the problematic one.
Do a factory reset
Another good troubleshooting step that you can do in this case is factory reset. As the name suggests, all software settings will be reset to their factory defaults, effectively eliminating any bugs that may have developed over time. If the cause of the problem is software-related, factory reset should address it.
To factory reset your J5, follow these steps:
- Create a backup of your personal files such as photos, videos, etc.
- Turn off the device.
- Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key, then press and hold the Power key.
- When the device logo screen displays, release only the Power key
- When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
- Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
- Press Power button to select.
- Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
- Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
- When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
- Press the Power key to restart the device.
Send the phone in for repair
