How to fix an unresponsive Galaxy S8, error keeps popping up when charging, other issues

Now that Samsung latest flagship, the #GalaxyS8, is approaching near its one-year mark (it was released in April of 2017), some users are beginning to report perennial problems like no power issue or black screen issue. In this post today, we cover these problems as well as two other related troubles.

Problem 1: How to fix an unresponsive Galaxy S8

Hi. I have a Galaxy S8 and one night I tried to check the time while it was on charge and it didn’t unlock. So i took it off charge and then it just wouldn’t work. I tried to put it on charge and there was no response from the phone and i’ve taken it to the store to see if they could get it working and they say it has a ‘software issue’. It has a very small crack in the screen so i’ve broken the warranty on my phone and it will cost me over £200 to get it fixed as they can’t do ‘partial repairs.’ So they have to fix the screen as well when all i want them to do is essentially to turn my phone back on.

Is there any other ways to get the phone to turn back on other than recovery mode or safe mode? Is it even possible to get into the back of an S8 to take the battery out? Thanks. — Luke

Solution: Hi Luke. Restarting your S8 to Recovery Mode and Safe Mode are part of the software package solutions that you can do in this case. Software solutions are, well, meant to fix software-related issues only. If the reason why your phone is not turning on is due to bad app/content or software glitch, any of the usual software solutions we recommend in our blog should help. If nothing works though, that’s a clear signal that hardware error or malfunction must be behind your trouble. This can be the reason why the store recommended to you that repair and screen replacement must be performed.

In order to see whether your S8 succumbed to hardware failure, or merely due to a software glitch, you must do the troubleshooting steps below.

Check power accessories

The reason why the phone appears to be not turning on may be outside the device itself. If the phone was not able to charge properly and the battery has ran low  on power Make sure that the charging cable and adapter are working fine by either testing it with another device, or by using a totally different but known working pair.

Also, if you can, try to inspect the charging port using a form of magnifying kit, you should do it. There may be a bent or damaged pin inside that blocks charging cable from charging the device properly. If you notice dirt or debris inside, consider using a can of compressed air to blow it out.

Verify if charging works

Another good troubleshooting step that you can do in this case is to see if the phone charges normally. The battery may not be charged making it appear that the phone won’t turn on at all. By default, your phone should show an LED light when it’s charging, or when it’s low on power. Unless you changed this default LED setting before, checking it is a helpful way to know whether or not you have a charging or low battery issue.     

Watch out for other symptoms

Is your phone not turning on or has the screen has gone black? For some users, there may not be a difference but knowing which one is critical. If your phone screen has been physically impacted and sustained damage, it may stop from working although the device may remain powered on. The phone should continue to show LED lights, make sound or vibrate notifications, and ring when you call your number. In this situation, you’ll have to replace the screen to bring the phone back to its normal working order.

On the other hand, if your phone appears to be totally dead — no sound or vibrate notifications, no LED lights, not ringing when calling your number — that may suggest that a totally different set of causes. In this case, the only thing that you can try is to see if you can revive the device by using another set of charging cable and adapter. If that won’t fix the issue, you’ll then have to send the phone in for repair.

Do a soft reboot

If you’ve already isolated the issue to the phone and not on charging cable, adapter, or charging port (at least there’s no visible damage) a No Power issue can be fixed by doing a simple procedure called soft reboot. It’s basically the equivalent of “pulling the battery” out. Since your S8 does not have a removable battery pack, all you can do to simulate a “battery pull” is by doing a hardware button combination. Here’s how:

  1. Charge the phone for at least 10 minutes.
  2. Press and hold the Power button and the Volume Down button for roughly 7 seconds.
  3. Release the buttons once you feel the device vibrate and see the Samsung Galaxy S8 logo on the screen.

Soft reboot or soft reset is a useful solution especially when your phone has froze or has simply become unresponsive.

Restart in safe mode

Sometimes, a third party app can cause problems by interfering with the operating system functions, including its boot routine. To see if a third party app is the cause, restart the phone to safe mode by doing these steps:

  1. Turn the device off.
  2. Press and hold the Power key past the model name screen.
  3. When “SAMSUNG” appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  4. Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  5. Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  6. Safe mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.
  7. Release the Volume down key when you see Safe Mode.
  8. Uninstall apps that are causing a problem.

Safe mode blocks third party apps and services. If you can boot the phone to safe mode but not in normal mode, that’s an obvious sign that a third party app is the cause.

Perform a factory reset

Finally, if all the software solutions above won’t work at all, make sure that you factory reset the device to return all software settings back to their defaults. If you can successfully boot the device to Recovery Mode and perform a factory reset, you’ll most likely fix the issue at your level. If not, contact Samsung for repair or replacement.

To factory reset your S8, follow these steps:

  1. Back up data on the internal memory. If you have signed into a Google account on the device, you have activated Anti-theft and will need your Google credentials to finish the Master reset.
  2. Turn off the device.
  3. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  4. When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  5. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight wipe data / factory reset.
  6. Press Power button to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key until Yes — delete all user data is highlighted.
  8. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  9. When the master reset is complete, “Reboot system now” is highlighted.
  10. Press the Power key to restart the device.

Problem 2: Galaxy S8 fast charging feature stopped working

Hey! Thanks for your time, it’s appreciated. This is an easy one because my S8 Plus is booked in for a repair. I just wanted to know if you’ve had many S8 Plus owners contact you because Fast Charging no longer works. have they? I’ve tried all troubleshooting tips and this didn’t fix my issue and it seems like there’s a problem with the board. I’ve read at least 4 owners with the same problem, not many but I only had 5 minutes spare to search around and that seems a lot to me. Solution: Hi ShaVerZ. At this time, you’re the first Galaxy S8 owner to contact us about fast charging issue for this device. We know though that some Galaxy S6 and S7 owners complained of losing this charging feature before so it’s not impossible to occur in the new Galaxy S8 devices as well.

Fast charging feature is made possible by a combination of smart firmware coding and improved hardware. This feature involves a complex set of intricate combinations of software and hardware that’s why it’s not being readily offered to low-end devices. Aside from requiring advanced software and hardware in the phone itself, it also needs a specially built adapter. Even if your phone’s fast charging feature is set up and enabled in your S8, it may still not work if you’re using a non-compatible fast charger. Be sure to use the charging cable and adapter that came with the phone.

If you’ve been using the Samsung original charging cable and adapter all along, then the issue is most probably deep inside the device itself. Unfortunately, the only troubleshooting step that you can do is very limited. The steps include enabling fast charging feature under Settings and performing a factory reset. If these two solutions won’t work, you’ll have to contact Samsung for repair or phone replacement.

Problem 3: Galaxy S8 not working after it got wet, error keeps popping up when charging

With a Samsung Galaxy S8 Clear Protective Cover on the back of the S8, I washed the phone quickly with cool tap water. I noticed a little later that there was a blotchiness on the back.  I thought it had picked up melted chocolate from my purse.  That was last night.  I charged it overnight and when I took if off the charger there was a bright blue drop alert with some kind of message.  I couldn’t access the alert, but the phone was at 43%.  I finally realized that water had been trapped overnight under the Protective Cover.  I pried it off, wiped the phone, but it won’t charge!  What have I done?! I put the phone into silicon gel hopefully to dry it out.  I also took a Q tip and inserted into charging port in case it was moist.  That’s as far as I’ve gotten.  Please help!  I’m afraid to take the battery out in case that only exasperates the situation. — Alexandra Crisafulli

Solution: Hi Alexandra. If you are using the Galaxy S8 Clear Protective Cover in this link, removing it and wiping the back of the phone to dry it out should fix the issue. However, if water did get inside the phone and not just between the S8 Clear Protective Cover, your phone may display some alert suggesting presence of water in the board.
