by Harold on May 30, 2018

When it comes to problems that have something to do with turning the phone on, we can almost tell it’s a hardware issue but when it comes to booting up, it is almost certain the phone is suffering from a firmware problem. That’s what we’re going to tackle here as some of our readers who own the Samsung Galaxy J7 contacted us about their units that got stuck on the Verizon screen during the boot up process.

We will try to look into some of the possibilities and rule out each of them until we can pinpoint what the problem really. This way, we can formulate a solution that might fix the problem for good and prevent it from occurring again in the future. We need to troubleshoot your phone to also know if this problem can be fixed without any help from Verizon’s technician because I know some of you hate to line up and describe to the tech the issue with your device. So, read on.

Before anything else though, if you have other issues with your device, then visit our Galaxy J7 troubleshooting page for we have already addressed several common problems with this phone. Odds are that there are already existing solutions to your problems so just take time finding issues that are similar with yours. How to troubleshoot Galaxy J7 that’s stuck on Verizon screen

Problem: Hi guys. My phone is a Galaxy J7 I bought from Verizon and it’s prepaid. It’s been with me since last year and I never actually encountered some serious problems with it not until recently. I’m not sure what happened to it but when I try to turn it on, it just won’t go past the Verizon screen. It stays on that screen until I turn it off. I already tried turning it off and back on a hundred times but the problem still remains. I’m thinking of bringing it to a Verizon store but I am hoping you could give some tips on how to fix this prior to that. Thanks.

Troubleshooting: It might be just a minor glitch or it might be due to a more serious problem with the firmware. I’m not sure if your phone has been updated recently but if it was, then there’s a possibility that some of the system caches got corrupted. Please go through the steps below to troubleshoot your phone:

Step 1: Soft reset your Galaxy J7

In case you haven’t done it yet, I need you to remove the back cover of your phone and then pull the battery out. While the battery is outside the phone, press and hold the Power key for a minute to drain off stored electricity in some of its components. This way, it’s memory is refreshed.

After which, place the battery back in and then secure it with the back cover. When ready, turn the phone on.

If it’s still stuck on the Verizon screen, then move on to the next step.

Step 2: Attempt to boot your phone in Safe mode

Booting in safe mode means you’re temporarily disabling all third-party apps. If one of them is causing the problem, then your J7 can boot up in that mode successfully. So, try these steps and see if you can bring your phone to start in safe mode:

  1. Turn the device off.
  2. Press and hold the Power key past the screen with the device name.
  3. When ‘SAMSUNG’ appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  4. Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  5. Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  6. Safe mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.
  7. Release the Volume down key when you see ‘Safe Mode’.

If the phone boots up in safe mode successfully, it means one or some of the apps you installed is causing the problem. Move on to the next step to fix the issue, otherwise, skip to step 4.

Step 3: Find, reset and uninstall suspected apps

Assuming your  J7 has successfully booted up in safe mode, then you need to find the third-party apps that are causing the phone to get stuck on the Verizon screen during boot up. Once you have a suspect, clear its cache and data first and then attempt to boot your phone in safe mode. If the problem still persists after that, start your phone in safe mode again and uninstall the app, then reboot your phone in normal mode. You may have to reset and/or uninstall more than one app to fix this problem.

How to clear app cache and data on your Galaxy J7

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Applications.
  4. Tap Application manager.
  5. Tap the desired application in the default list or tap MORE > Show system apps to display pre-installed apps.
  6. Tap Storage.
  7. Tap Clear data and then tap OK.
  8. Tap Clear cache.

How to uninstall an app from your Galaxy J7

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Applications.
  4. Tap Application manager.
  5. Tap the desired application
  6. Tap Uninstall.
  7. Tap Uninstall again to confirm.

Step 4: Attempt to boot in Recovery mode

You have to do this if your J7 cannot boot up in safe mode successfully. Even if your phone is suffering from a serious firmware issue, it may still be able to boot into this mode as it is its fail-safe. If successful, you can do a couple of general troubleshooting procedures that might just fix the problem.

The first would be to wipe the cache partition so that all system caches will be replaced with new ones. This procedure is very effective in dealing with firmware related issues that occur after an update.

How to reboot in Recovery mode and wipe cache partition

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the device logo screen displays, release only the Power key
  4. When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  5. Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  6. Press the Power key to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key to highlight ‘yes’ and press the Power key to select.
  8. When the wipe cache partition is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  9. Press the Power key to restart the device.

It may take a little longer for the phone to boot up after deleting the system caches as it will rebuild the caches. However, if the phone is still stuck on Verizon screen, then you have to do the second troubleshooting procedure while the phone is in Recovery mode.

Step 5: Reset your Galaxy J7

If you’ve successfully booted up your  phone in Recovery mode and wiped off the cache partition but failed, then this is the next thing you should do. You won’t be able to backup all your files and data as the phone cannot boot up successfully but you should try resetting your device, at least, before you send it in for checkup.

  5. Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
  6. Press Power button to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  8. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  9. When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  10. Press the Power key to restart the device.

If the problem still occurs after this, then bring your phone to the Verizon store.
