What to do with your Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus with screen flickering issue (easy steps)

Aside from black crush and color banding issues with the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus reported by some of our readers, there were also some owners who reported to have encountered the screen flickering issues. We have already encountered several problems before that manifest screen flickering signs and symptoms and it may range from a simple app-related issue to a more complicated firmware and hardware problems. You need to do something to determine why it’s happening in the first place and how to fix it.

In this post, I will walk you through in troubleshooting your Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus. We will try to rule out each possibility to know why the screen flickers on your phone. Again, this isn’t the first time we encountered this problem so we already know a thing or two that could help you fix this problem. How to fix you Galaxy S9 Plus with screen flickering issue


The course of our troubleshooting will be to first try to determine if this is just a minor issue. There’s a very simple procedure I want you to do before you actually troubleshoot your phone. With that said, here are the things I suggest you do about this problem…

First solution: Reboot your Galaxy S9 Plus

This is the simplest solution to almost all problems with smartphones provided those issues are not due to physical and/or liquid damage. If this is the first time you’ve encountered the screen flickering issue and you haven’t tried rebooting your phone since the first sign manifested, then it’s the perfect time to do it. So, hit that power key and restart your phone to try to address this issue. If the problem still occurs after this, try doing the Forced Restart procedure:

  • Press and hold the Volume Down and Power keys at the same time for 10 seconds or more.

This will simulate battery disconnect and refresh your phone’s memory by closing all apps running in the background as well as reload all services and core functions. After doing these very simple procedures and the problem is still happening, then it’s time to move on to the next solution.

Second solution: Run your phone in Safe mode

All third-party applications will be temporarily disabled while the phone is in safe mode but why is this important? Well, we don’t really know if there is an app that’s causing the screen to flicker from time to time especially CPU and GPU extensive games. We want to know if the flickering also happens in this safe mode or not because if it does not happen in that environment, then it means that the cause of the problem is a third-party app or two. That would be a lot easier to fix it that is the case here.

This is how you run your S9 Plus in safe mode:

  1. Turn the device off.
  2. Press and hold the Power key past the model name screen appearing on the screen.
  3. When SAMSUNG appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  4. Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  5. Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  6. When Safe mode appears in the bottom left corner of the screen, release the Volume down key.

Assuming the problem doesn’t occur in this mode, find the app that’s causing the problem and uninstall it. Of course, that would be a lot easier said than done so you must try uninstalling apps you installed when this problem started happening.

  1. From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
  2. Tap Settings > Apps.
  3. Tap the desired application in the default list.
  4. To display preinstalled apps, tap Menu > Show system apps.
  5. Tap UNINSTALL > OK.

On the other hand, if the problem continues to bug you even in safe mode, then you have to troubleshoot the firmware. Move on to the next solution…

Third solution: Wipe cache partition

Corrupt system cache may also cause the screen to flicker or even result to more serious problems. The system caches are actually just a set of small files created by the firmware which helps make your phone run faster and smoother. However, if they get corrupted and the system continues to use them, performance problems may occur including this one. It is, therefore, necessary to delete those caches so that they will be replaced with new ones. Don’t worry, you only have to deleted them but the created of new caches will be up to the firmware:

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Android logo displays, release all three keys.
  4. An ‘Installing system update’ message will show for 30 – 60 seconds before the Android system recovery menu options appear.
  5. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight wipe cache partition.
  6. Press Power key to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key to highlight yes, them and press the Power key to select.
  8. When the wipe cache partition is complete, Reboot system now is highlighted.
  9. Press the Power key to restart the device.

Your phone will take a little time booting up after the cache partition is wiped off of its contents as it will rebuild or recreate those caches. Continue using your phone and closely observe it to know if the problem still occurs and if it still does, then you really have to reset it.

Fourth solution: Perform the Master Reset

There is no guarantee that the problem can be fixed by a reset but it’s necessary to do it because just in case the problem continues after this, you can bring the phone to the shop directly without any fear of compromising your privacy.

Make sure you make a backup of your important files and data as they will be deleted during the process. After the backup, disable the Factory Reset Protection by removing your google account from your phone so that you won’t be locked out after the reset. After which, follow these steps to reset your phone:

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  4. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
  5. Press Power button to select.
  6. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  7. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  8. When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  9. Press the Power key to restart the device.

If the problem continues after the reset, then bring the phone to the shop so that a technician will be able to check it up for you. It is clear at this point that it’s not just a minor problem. It could be an issue with the hardware. But I hope we’ve been able to help you one way or another.
