This post will address a couple of charging-related issues with the Samsung Galaxy S5. These problems could also happen to you or perhaps, since you found this post, you may be experiencing the same issues with your phone. Well, read on so you could learn how to troubleshoot problems like these.
Just an overview, the first issue I’m going to address is very common. According to the owner, the phone charges (or not charges) intermittently and she has to hold or wrap the cable around the phone to make it charge.
The second issue I cited here isn’t really common but it could happen to you as well especially that it is not exclusive to Galaxy S5. It has something to do with the capability of Galaxy devices to “share power.” Our reader said that there’s a Power Sharing notice that pops up and the phone won’t charge.

Samsung Galaxy S5 won’t charge properly
Problem: “My phone all the sudden stopped charging properly. When I plug it into any outlet or pc it will not consistently charge. I have to wrap the cord around the phone or hold the phone in a certain angle for it to charge. I am trying to figure out if it’s a battery issue or is something wrong with the charging port. I have taken out the battery for a bit then put it back in. It fixes temporarily, but then it goes back to doing the same thing. what can i do and what could be wrong? Thanks, Jess.”
Troubleshooting: Actually, there are two possibilities here: either it’s the cable that has a problem or the USB or utility port. To make it easier for you to determine the problem, try to use a different USB cable to charge the phone and see if the problem persists. If not, then you should buy a new cable.
However, if the problem is with the USB port, try to find out if it’s just loose or it needs intervention from a technician. Try to plug the cable and twitch it a little bit to see if there’s some kind of a play when you do so and if there’s none, then it may need to be re-soldered. Otherwise, using a different or new cable will fix the problem.
Power Sharing notice keeps popping up
Problem: “Suddenly this afternoon my phone stopped charging. It was charging fine at home this morning and in the car when I left. Now it gave me a message about power sharing in the car, won’t charge there or in the house. It can’t be a sudden surge of bad batteries. I am getting ticked off. Job hunting and I desperately Need my phone to work!”
Troubleshooting: First of all, for the benefit our readers who don’t know what this notice is all about, the following is the actual notice: “Power Sharing: You must download the app in order to control the amount of power shared. If you connect your device to another device with the Samsung Power Sharing Cable EP-SG900 without the app, the entire battery amount will be transferred to the other device. Connect to Samsung Apps and download the application.”
The thing is this problem may happen regardless if the Power Sharing app is installed or not. The first thing you need to do is boot the phone in safe mode to see if the notice would pop up.
- Turn the device off.
- Press and hold the Power key.
- When ‘Samsung Galaxy S5’ appears on the screen, release the Power key.
- Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
- Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
- Safe mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.
- Release the Volume down key when you see Safe Mode.
If the notice didn’t pop up when you booted your phone in safe mode and it happens that you installed the app, then just uninstall it and the phone should be fine after that. Otherwise, you need to perform hard reset as there’s a conflict with the firmware.
- Turn off the device.
- Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up key, Home key, and Power key.
- When the phone vibrates, release the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key.
- When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.
- Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
- Press Power button to select.
- Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
- Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
- When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
- Press the Power key to restart the device.
