How to fix Messenger that keeps crashing on Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus (easy steps)

Facebook is already a pre-installed app on your Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus but the Messenger is not and you have to download and install it from the Play Store to be able to use instant messaging. How to fix Galaxy S9 Plus with Messenger app that keeps crashing


The following solutions are very effective in fixing app-related issues like this. You can also use them in addressing errors like “Unfortunately, Messenger has stopped.” Try to see if one of them works for you…

First solution: Reset Messenger

By reset I mean clear the cache and data of the app in question. When it comes to issues with apps, this is the most effective solution and this should be the first thing that you should do if the application crashes. Here’s how to you do it:

  1. From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
  2. Tap Settings > Apps.
  3. Find and tap Messenger.
  4. Tap Storage.
  5. Tap Clear cache.
  6. Tap Clear data and then tap OK.
  7. Reboot your phone.

Once the phone successfully rebooted, open facebook and then try to use the Messenger to know if the app still crashes. If it does, then you must do the next solution.

Second solution: Uninstall and reinstall Messenger

Usually, I would suggest updating the app in question but in this case, I want you to uninstall Messenger to remove all its associations with other apps and services including the files it created or accumulated. After which, download the Messenger again and then reinstall it.

  1. From a Home screen, touch and swipe up or down to display all apps.
  2. From a Home screen, navigate: Settings > Apps.
  3. Tap App Manager.
  4. Locate then tap Messenger.
  5. Tap UNINSTALL.
  6. Review the notification then tap OK to confirm.
  7. Reboot your phone to refresh it’s memory and other connections.

Now, to reinstall Twitter, follow these steps…

  1. From a Home screen, touch and swipe up or down to display all apps.
  2. Tap Play Store.
  3. Type ‘messenger’ in the search box.
  4. Select Messenger then tap Install.
  5. To continue, review the required app permissions then tap Accept.

Reinstalling the app means you have the latest version.

Third solution: Reset your phone

If by any chance the problem continues to bug you after this, then you may have to reset your phone. But before you actually do that, make sure to backup your files and data as they will be deleted and you may not be able to retrieve them.

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  4. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
  5. Press Power button to select.
  6. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  7. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  8. When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  9. Press the Power key to restart the device.
