Galaxy S9 LinkedIn app not updating its News Feed [troubleshooting guide]

Today’s problem: Galaxy S9 LinkedIn app not updating its News Feed

I have a Samsung Galaxy S9. I’ve had it 3 days and successfully transferred data from my S6 to the S9. LinkedIn App has been working fine since that transfer until this morning. Previously, I was able to see my LinkeIn News Feed on the S9 and this news feed updated as and when a new post was added. However, today, I am only able to see 2 Adverts and nothing else. I’ve adjusted my privacy and advert settings, but this has not made any difference. When i’ve logged in to LinkedIn using my laptop, my news feed is fine, so it is just the phone (S9) that is causing the issue. I am unable to uninstall as it only allows me to Disable. When I have disabled it and then enabled it – nothing has changed. Please help. — Kim Tulley-Martin

Solution: Hi Kim. Your LinkedIn app, just like any similar social networking apps, requires constant internet connection in order to bring you the latest updates or news feeds. Aside from the obvious need for a stable internet connection, there are also other things that must be present in order for it to work properly. To fix your problem, make sure to check out our suggested solutions below.

Verify phone has internet connection

As mentioned above, apps like LinkedIn needs almost constant connection in order to show you the latest news, feeds, and more. Make sure that your phone’s internet connection has not stopped. A lot of users would prefer to do more advanced troubleshooting without checking for obvious causes. If internet connection on your S9 has always been running, then skip this and jump straight to the next troubleshooting step.

Verify LinkedIn service is up and running

Some social networking apps are usually connected to an independent set of servers from their web-based version so make sure that you check how LinkedIn works on another mobile device. It’s possible that LinkedIn’s Android app service may be down while its web counterpart is not affected. To check, install LinkedIn app on another device, sign in to it, and see if it works. If it does work on another device but not on your S9, then you should continue troubleshooting your phone.

Switch to wifi or mobile data

To check if the current network connection has a bug that affects the app, make sure to try switching to another network type. So, for example, you’re using mobile data on your device when this problem occurs, consider connecting to a known working wifi and see how LinkedIn app works. Do the opposite if the issue first occured when you’re on a wifi network.

Toggle Airplane Mode

Network-related issues are sometimes fixed by doing a simple step of toggling Airplane Mode on and off. If you haven’t tried it yet, be sure to do so. Just scroll down the screen from the top, look for Airplane Mode icon, and tap it. After a few moments, tap the same icon to turn it back off.

Ensure Sync is enabled

Your Galaxy S9 won’t be able to update apps with new contents if you turned its Sync function off. To ensure that it’s enabled, scroll the screen from the top, just like what you did when toggling Airplane Mode. then, find Sync and make sure that it’s turned on. Afterwards, restart the phone and see how LinkedIn app works.

Clear cache and data of LinkedIn app

Another good troubleshooting step that you can do is to clear the cache and data of your LinkedIn app. Normally, clearing the cache goes first but if this option is not available, just like the Uninstall button, then you can go ahead by deleting the data. Here’s how:

  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Tap Apps.
  3. Tap More settings (three-dot icon) at the upper-right.
  4. Tap Show system apps.
  5. Find the keyboard app you’re using. This may be Samsung Keyboard or the name of the third party keyboard app you’re using.
  6. Once you found the keyboard app, open it.
  7. Tap Storage.
  8. Tap Clear Cache button.
  9. Restart your S8.
  10. Check if the problem still exists.

Should the issue remain after clearing the cache of keyboard and messaging apps, repeat steps 1-7 and hit Clear Data button.

Install app and Android updates

Some apps may affect other apps when they are incompatible or running outdated versions. To minimize the chances of other apps causing the problem, make sure that both Android and apps are up-to-date.

To check for app updates:

  1. Open Play Store app.
  2. Tap Menu icon at the upper left side.
  3. Tap My apps & games.
  4. Let Play Store app check for updates.
  5. Tap UPDATE ALL button.
  6. Wait until everything has been updated.

To check for Android updates:

  1. Tap Settings app.
  2. Tap Software update.
  3. Tap Download updates manually.

Reset app preferences

Apps don’t work by themselves. In most instances, they require other apps and services in order to work so if a necessary app or service has been disabled or uninstalled, it may not work properly. To ensure that all default apps are there for your LinkedIn app, be sure to reset all app preferences. This solution option will have the following effects:

 

  1. re-enables previously disabled apps and services
  2. resets default apps for actions
  3. turns off background data restrictions for apps
  4. return app permissions to their defaults
  5. unblock app notifications

To reset app preferences on your S9:

  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Tap Apps.
  3. Tap More settings (three-dot) icon at the upper right.
  4. Tap Reset app preferences.

Reset all settings

Ideally, your issue should already by fixed by now but if your LinkeIn app is still not working as expected, then it’s time that you reset your app’s settings. This has the effect similar to a factory reset although it won’t quite so. Resetting all settings works like a factory reset but it won’t delete your personal data, security, language, and account settings.

To reset all settings on your S9:

  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Tap General management.
  3. Tap Reset.
  4. Tap Reset all settings.
  5. Tap RESET SETTINGS button.

Contact app developer

Should the issue remain at this point, make sure that you contact the app’s developer. There may be a coding issue or incompatibility problem with the app version on your S9. Unfortunately, there’s nothing much that you can do at this point. You’ll have to let the app developer figure out the issue for you. All you need to do is to report the bug. You can do that by going under LinkedIn app’s Settings menu.
