Fixing Samsung Galaxy Note 8 with Black Screen of Death (easy steps)

We’ve already addressed the Black Screen of Death issue a few months after Samsung Galaxy Note 8 was released last year and since then we’ve received tons of emails from our readers. It seems that there are still a lot of owners who are experiencing this problem that’s why we need to address it again but this time, we will be providing you with a solution that worked for many of our readers.

At the later part of this article, we will still be suggesting troubleshooting procedure you can follow in case the solution doesn’t work. If you’re one of the owners of this device and are currently bugged by a similar problem, continue reading to know what to do with it.

Quick fix to the Black Screen of Death issue on Galaxy Note 8

We already know this solution because black screen of death is often caused by a system crash and there’s no better way to address it than this. Since we published our first article on this problem, we’ve received hundreds of messages confirming that this solution works. In our first post, this is just part of our troubleshooting guide but now it’s a fix although we can’t guarantee that it will fix every black screen issue since not all problems are the same. But it won’t hurt if you try this…

Solution: Press and hold the Volume Down button and the Power key simultaneously for 10 seconds (or more).

If this doesn’t work, press and hold the Volume Down button first, don’t let go of it, then press and hold the Power key. Keep both keys held together for 10 seconds and it should bring the phone back to life provided there’s enough battery and that this problem is due to a system crash. If this fails either, do this…

  1. Plug the charger to a working wall outlet.
  2. Connect your Galaxy Note 8 to it using the original USB cable.
  3. While the phone is connected to its charger, press and hold both Vol Down and Power keys together for 10 seconds or more.

After trying these things and the phone remained to be unresponsive and won’t turn back on, then you should try troubleshooting it before you decide to bring it to the service center.

Basically, there are only a couple of troubleshooting procedure you can try to see if the phone is still capable of powering up but before that, you have to verify that this is not an issue caused by liquid damage…

  1. Look into the USB port to see if there’s a trace of water or liquid of any sort.
  2. Clean the area using a cotton swab or get rid of the moisture by inserting a small piece of tissue into the port.
  3. Check the Liquid Damage Indicator (LDI) to know if it’s tripped or not.
  4. Remove the SIM card tray and look into the SIM slot to find the LDI.
  5. If the LDI is white, there’s no liquid damage; if it turned red or purple, then there’s liquid damage.

In case there’s a sign of liquid damage, don’t anything except bring the phone to the service center so that the tech can clean it up for you.

After verifying there’s no liquid damage, try the following procedures to try and bring the phone to turn on.

Try to run the phone in Safe mode

Usually, we recommend to our readers to run their phones in safe mode to disable all third-party apps but this time we just want you to do it for the sake of knowing if the phone is still capable of starting up in its bare bones.

  1. Press and hold the Power key past the model name screen.
  2. When “SAMSUNG” appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  3. Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  4. Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  5. Safe mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.
  6. Release the Volume down key when you see Safe Mode.

If the phone turns on in this mode, consider the problem fixed. The next thing you need to do is find the app that’s causing the problem and uninstall it.

  1. From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
  2. Tap Settings > Apps.
  3. Find and tap the app you suspect.
  4. Tap Uninstall.
  5. Tap Uninstall again to confirm.

However, if the phone also refuses to turn on into this mode, try the next step.

Try to boot your Note 8 in Recovery mode

The Android system recovery mode is the fail-safe for almost all Android devices so even if there’s a serious firmware issue for as long as the hardware and the battery is fine, your phone should be able to boot up in this mode. If successful, you can do a couple of things that might help fix all other issues with your phone. But just like booting in safe mode, the moment your phone turns into this mode, consider the problem fixed. But I suggest you do the wiping of the cache partition if the phone boots into this mode successfully…

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  4. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe cache partition’.
  5. Press Power button to select.
  6. Press the Volume down key until ‘yes’ is highlighted and press the Power button.
  7. When the wipe cache partition is complete, “Reboot system now” is highlighted.
  8. Press the Power key to restart the device.

Or you can do the Master reset if there are complications after wiping the cache partition but bear in mind that all your files and data will be deleted including your contacts, messages, pictures, music, videos, etc…

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  4. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight “wipe data / factory reset.
  5. Press Power button to select.
  6. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  7. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  8. When the master reset is complete, “Reboot system now” is highlighted.
  9. Press the Power key to restart the device.

However, if the phone cannot boot up in recovery mode, then it’s time to bring it to the service center because the problem is something that you can’t fix by yourself. But even if you are techie enough to open up your phone, there’s no guarantee you can fix the problem by yourself and the fact that the warranty will be voided when you do so makes things a bit more complicated.
