Problem 1: How to block private numbers on Galaxy S8
I get a lot of blocked calls so I downloaded an app. It was working fine then one day I was on my phone and the private call called in while I’m on the phone and the whole call dropped. So I thought it was the app so I uninstalled and downloaded another app that blocks private numbers and it’s still doing the same thing, dropping the call that I’m on. I want to block private numbers without having the calls I want dropped. — Tara
Solution: Hi Tara. First of all, installing a third party app (we’re assuming the apps you installed are not from Samsung, Google, or your carrier) to block calls is redundant since the default Phone app from Samsung already has such feature. We don’t know what app you installed though so we cannot say for sure if it works properly or not. Try to avoid installing anything unless the feature you’re looking for is totally absent from your system. This will not only free up memory space but can also spare you from additional burden on the battery, as well as prevent you from unnecessarily exposing your information from third parties. If you want to use the built-in call blocking feature in your Phone app, do the following:
- Open the Samsung Phone
- Open Settings by tapping on the three-dot icon on the upper right.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Block numbers.
- Tap Block anonymous calls. This will tell the phone not to receive calls from unsaved numbers.
Secondly, the calls dropping problem may be fixed by your carrier so we recommend that you ask them for support on this one. They are in the best position to address this issue since they are in the business of providing calling service to you in the first place.
Lastly, again, we recommend that you refrain from using third party apps for this issue. Unless you are 100% positive that such app can help and the developer’s reputation is okay, you should just stick to the first two suggestions above.
Problem 2: Unable to send videos in Total Wireless Galaxy S8
Hi. We purchased our S8s new from Walmart in March 2017. We have Total Wireless service (Walmart based) on Verizon Carrier. I have been trying to send small videos through text messages app and it will not go through. We also used to be able to attach at least 2 pics at a time and send, but now it’s only one. It says that data limit reached when we do either. I’m quite frustrated because according to Verizon we should be able to send up to 100 MB messages. 1 video message is 55.6 MB for example. These are not that big. Was hoping you might have a solution. — Dana
Solution: Hi Dana. This is a problem that should be fixed by your carrier, Total Wireless. Verizon is simply providing the physical infrastructure but the system, that is, software and under-the-hood workings, are provided by Total Wireless, which is your carrier. You should talk to Total Wireless about the issue and not Verizon. There may be a certain file size limit when it comes to sending MMS on their system and you may be going over that limit.
Total Wireless is a prepaid wireless phone service so if you run out of mobile data credits, MMS, which requires internet connection to operate, will obviously fail. Make sure that you troubleshoot the issue when you have working mobile data connection.
Problem 3: Galaxy S8 camera vibrates when camera app is used, music player skips tracks on its own
Hi. I have two main problems with my phone right now.
The first is with the back camera. Whenever I turn the camera on, the camera starts to vibrate for at least 10 seconds before it stabilizes. It is only after that vibration that I can use the camera. While it is vibrating the image is blurry and it makes a funny vibration sound close to the sound bee will make and of course no other button nor camera option works while it does that.
The second is with the inbuilt music player. That is the only music player I use in my phone and recently music stops playing on its own and sometimes it skips to the next music still on its own. I can’t listen to music anymore due to that. Then again I have noticed it does that when my earphones are plugged in. I might be wrong but so far I have not encountered the issue when I play music on my phone on its speakers.
Apart from that another problem I have encountered and also noticed it only when my earphones are plugged in is the fact that the Google voice mike opens on it’s own. It also did that with S voice, as in it will open on its own and I thought deleting the S voice app will solve the problem but instead it made it worse. I really do not know what else to do. Please help me out. — Gaelle
Solution: Hi Gaelle. We have no idea about the history of your phone, if whether or not it suffered any physical damage due to moisture, temperature extreme exposure, or water damage, but we suggest that you don’t address the issues individually. Instead, we recommend that you treat these issues as symptoms of a rather bigger issue, probably a hardware one. A new Samsung flagship like an S8 shouldn’t have these issues so early in its life so something’s not really right hardware-wise. For example, the camera vibration that occurred when you open the camera app should not be there in the first place. To check if it’s a hardware issue, make sure that you do a factory reset and see what happens from there. If the same symptoms continue to occur after that, with no apps installed yet, you can bet bad hardware is to blame. In that case, we strongly suggest that you contact Samsung or your carrier to have it replaced.
For reference, here are the steps on how to factor reset your S8:
- Back up data on the internal memory. If you have signed into a Google account on the device, you have activated Anti-theft and will need your Google credentials to finish the Master reset.
- Turn off the device.
- Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
- When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
- Press the Volume down key several times to highlight “wipe data / factory reset.
- Press Power button to select.
- Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
- Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
- When the master reset is complete, “Reboot system now” is highlighted.
- Press the Power key to restart the device.
Problem 4: Galaxy S8 screen remains black and won’t turn on
When the phone is powered on, the light at the top flashes showing it is powered on but the screen is black. I cannot also using quick shortcuts bring up the camera which shows on the screen and one-handed mode which shows the normal display in the background with a smaller version of the black screen in the corner. I have tried when it is powered off accessing the recovery mode. before I get there it has 2 screens one saying installing update and then the next saying no command. I have got into recovery mode and cleared the cache but that has not fixed the issue. i have also held volume down key, home key and the power key.and it says do you want to download the custom OS. i have tried clicking the volume down key to cancel but every time I do it the install custom OS screen appears. I don’t know if this is relevant or not but i figured it was better to include it than not.
The screen also overrides the black screen when a phone call comes through. It started last night when my phone was on 2% while I was using an app. So i quickly went to plug it in. The screen went black and the blue light came on to indicate that it was powering off. Then it quickly flashed up the home screen, then shut down again. After leaving it to charge a while i turned it on and the black screen started. — Ewan
Solution: Hi Ewan. We’re not sure if we understand the situation clearly here but there’s only one overriding rule that you should follow. If the phone appears on (because it makes sound notifications and vibrations) but the screen remains black regardless of what you do, something must not be right with the screen assembly. It’s either physically damaged, or there’s an unknown hardware glitch preventing it from turning on. Either case, you must let a professional take a look at the hardware to fix the problem. There are no software tricks that you can do in this situation.
Problem 5: Galaxy S8 won’t show app shortcut in Home screen
Anytime that I download a new app from Google Play app, after it downloaded and it tells me it has added the app to my home screen it isn’t there. When I pull up the screen with all the apps it isn’t there either. I search for it and I find it and then from there I press and hold until I see add to home screen and I click that and it doesn’t go to the home screen. Any apps I’ve had in there for awhile it add to the home screen just find. This is super annoying when I wanna get to the app quick. — Cmjimenez87
Solution: Hi Cmjimenez87. In order to assist you, we need more information further. What you provide are very basic and do not give any specific details that might help us figure out the cause. Please get back to us and provide relevant details by answering the following questions:
- What is the name of the app are you having a problem with?
- Are you using stock Samsung firmware or custom ROM?
- Did you install any other apps that might modify home screen behaviors, or prevent an app shortcut to be added to the home screen?
- Did you do anything different prior to noticing the problem like install an app or update?
Once you get back to us, we’ll update this post accordingly and provide the answers.
In the meantime, you can also try to do a factory reset and see if that will make any difference. Refer to the steps above on how to do it.
Problem 6: Galaxy S8 videos sent via MMS are grain, low quality
I have the brand new Galaxy S8. For work, I often have to send videos to my boss through text. Even one 15 second video on the lowest possible quality setting is so grainy, you can hardly make it out. This is a brand new, 2017 phone. I really hated Apple and was really looking forward to switching to Android, but even my old iPhone 4 from years ago, sends clear video with ease. I know this issue was discussed, but it only explains why it happens, not how to solve the problem. I can’t imagine that such a huge company boasting such an awesome camera and video update has a problem like this that can’t be fixed. — Rebekah
Solution: Hi Rebekah. The problem is not your phone but how the messaging app or your carrier’s system converts (which one is responsible must be figured out by your carrier) reduces the quality of your videos. Pictures and videos sent as MMS (via text) are often converted by carriers to save on bandwidth, or to allow them to be transmitted in the first place. Stop blaming Samsung and start talking to your carrier about it.
Problem 7: Company app won’t work in Galaxy S8
Yes, thank you. I have problems getting into a company app. Worked fine for 3 weeks, then won’t get on to app. It works fine at home but not at work. I have took it to BestBuy twice and talked to IT at work. They say it is the phone. I had another device sent to me. This one worked for 1 day and does the same thing. Can you give me any advise? Thanks. I have cleared all cooking and browser history. — Robert
Solution: Hi Robert. First of all, we don’t know what app you’re talking about and we have no idea what error or problem you’re having. Let the developer, the maker, of the app know of the issue so they can check what it’s not working on your S8. there’s a chance that they haven’t coded it to work with your phone since it’s the latest from Samsung.
Secondly, even if we do know its name, we will still be unable to help you since we are not the developer of such app. It may be incompatible with your phone, or something must have changed to cause it to fail. Did you install any update before noticing the problem? If you did, try to uninstall the update (we’re assuming it’s an app update) by simply deleting the app’s data. Here’s how:
- Open the Settings menu either through your notification shade (drop-down) or through the Settings app in your app drawer.
- Navigate down to “Apps”. This may be renamed to something like Applications or Application Manager in OEM skinned versions of Android 6 or 7.
- Once in there, click on an application.
- You’ll now see a list of stuff that gives you information about the app, including Storage, Permissions, Memory Use, and more. These are all clickable items. You’ll want to click on Storage.
- You should now clearly see the Clear Cache and Clear Data buttons for the application.
Problem 8: Galaxy S8 screen is black, won’t power back on
I had to write to you from my GF’s phone because my phone won’t turn on at all. I have a Galaxy S8 plus. Yesterday, throughout the night when i connect it to the charger it will turn off on its own. Phone hasn’t been dropped nor has the battery ever been drained. A few times it would turn back on. But since 1am, it doesn’t turn on at all. I’ve tried holding the volume up button and power button and nothing. Any advice? Or should i just go to the store? Thanks. — Osmany
Solution: Hi Osmany. Try to see if you’ll be able to turn the phone on to other modes — Recovery Mode, Download Mode, or Safe Mode. If it can power on to any of these modes, there’s a chance that you’ll be able to fix it on your end by doing follow up troubleshooting. Below are the steps on how to boot to each of these modes and the respective troubleshooting that you can do afterwards. Remember, if your phone won’t power on at all, or the screen remains black, have it replaced.
Boot in Recovery mode:
- Charge the phone for at least 30 minutes.
- Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key.
- When the Samsung Galaxy logo shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
- When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds.
- Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
- You can either wipe the cache partition or do a factory reset when in this mode.
Boot in Download Mode:
- Charge the phone for at least 30 minutes.
- Press and then hold the Home and Volume DOWN keys, then press and hold the Power key.
- When the Samsung Galaxy logo shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume DOWN keys.
- Wait until the Download screen appears.
- If you can boot the phone in download mode but not in other modes, that means that your only way out may be to flash a stock or custom firmware.
- Use Google to look for a guide on how to do it.
Boot in safe mode:
- Charge the phone for at least 30 minutes.
- Press and hold the Power button.
- Once the Samsung Galaxy logo appears, release the Power key and immediately press and hold the Volume Down button.
- Continue holding the button until the phone finishes rebooting.
- Once you see the text “Safe mode” at the bottom left corner of the screen, release the Volume Down button.
- The only difference of safe mode from normal mode is that the former prevents third party apps from running. If you can boot the phone in safe mode but not in normal mode, uninstall all apps until the issue (that prevents you from booting normally) is eliminated.
Problem 9: Galaxy S8 not getting signal
My Samsung Galaxy S8 gets no reception at my lake cabin. I have a Tracfone service now and have gotten service there in past years with my Tracfone flip phone, but not with my Galaxy S8. I couldn’t get service there with T-Mobile either on the Galaxy S8. I think it’s the phone and not the service. Can you help me? I can’t answer your questions. — Kathy
Solution: Hi Kathy. We don’t think there’s anything that we can do to help you in this case. You should talk to your carrier and see if your cabin’s location is covered by their service. You can’t just rely on historical experience. It’s possible that the area may have very poor to non-existent coverage, or there’s an on-going outage that affects your location. Your carrier should be able to confirm which of these scenarios is true. There’s nothing a third support team like us can do to improve the signal in your area.
Problem 10: Galaxy S8 screen showing pixelation, keeps flashing
First problem occurred 2 days after I purchased the phone. a number of pixels broke in the upper corner, when I returned to best buy to see what could be done, was told might or might not be a defect, nothing they could do. I would have to pay to get it repaired.
Second, the screen will flash when open or flashes open and closed. — William
Solution: Hi William. The two issues might be related and has one single cause. To check if it’s a screen problem, do a factory reset and observe what happens. If the problems continue, boot the device to, say, Download Mode (steps provided above). Download mode runs a different code and is separate from the operating system so if the problem is Android specific, the screen should work fine, there shouldn’t be any pixelation and abnormal flashing.
If the issues remain even when you have the phone in Download mode, that’s a clear indicator that the screen is defective. You should have the screen or the phone replaced. No software “magic” exists to fix a bad hardware.
