Galaxy S6 stuck in bootloop during an update, won’t boot normally, other power issues

Problem 1: Galaxy S6 stuck in bootloop during an update, won’t boot normally

Hi, my wife has a Samsung galaxy S6 edge which was automatically updating during the night. It is installing the update up to 31% and the phone switches itself off and tries to install again up to 31% and the process has been repeating for hours. i tried a hard reset but his hasn’t worked . Can you give me some information as to how to fix this issue? Thanks very much. — Sean.mcauley01

Solution: Hi Sean. Installation of updates can sometimes take hours depending on the state of a phone. Are you sure you let the phone finish the process before you tried to interrupt it? Updates change core system files and if a device is interrupted (powered off, or restarted) during installation, permanent software issue can occur.

At this time, the only suggestions we can give for you are the following:

  1. wipe the cache partition
  2. perform a factory reset
  3. reflash the bootloader and/or firmware

The first two steps can be performed if you can still restart the device to Recovery Mode. To do that, follow these steps:

  1. Charge the phone for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Samsung Galaxy logo shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
  4. When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds.
  5. You can either wipe the cache partition or do a factory reset when in this mode.

If you won’t be able to restart to Recovery Mode, or if wiping the cache partition and factory reset won’t fix the problem, you can try to reflash the bootloader and/or firmware. Below are the sample steps on how to do this step. Keep in mind that the exact steps may be slightly different for your phone model so do some of your own digging on how to do it in your device. You also need to have a computer with Odin software installed.

  1. Look for the correct firmware for your phone model and download it. Make sure that you select the right one. It should be the same exact firmware that ran previously on your device. We assume that you list down the firmware version somewhere. If you did not take note of it before, there’s a chance that you may pick the wrong one. As you may know now, using an incorrect firmware can cause complications so good luck with that.
  2. Let’s now say that you have identified the correct firmware. You then want to download it to your computer. The firmware file should have a bunch of files in it like AP_, BL_, CSC_, etc.
  3. Look for the file that starts with a label BL; this should be the corresponding bootloader file for this firmware. Once you’ve identified the bootloader file, copy it to your computer’s desktop or to any other folder that you can easily access.
  4. Proceed with the rest of the flashing procedure using the Odin program.
  5. In Odin, click on the BL tab and make sure to use the bootloader file you’ve identified earlier.
  6. Now, make sure that the “Device Added” status and its “ID:COM box” has turned blue before hitting the START button. This will initiate the flashing of your phone’s bootloader.
  7. Restart the phone once the procedure is finished.

Problem 2: Water damaged Galaxy S6 overheating, won’t charge

Dropped my phone in the toilet for the second time this year. First thing i did was take it out of its case and pat it dry. It turned on afterwards so i wasn’t particularly worried, neither was my mum. i tried to get the water out of the charger port and the headphone port by tapping my phone on my bed. it seemed to work so i waited about 30 minutes then tried to plug my phone in at which point it made a weird buzzing sound. The screen (which is already cracked) went to that white and grey static screen, then it went back to my lock screen and was working fine for around 5 minutes. It was telling me my device was overheating and it would shut off in 10 seconds, so i left it to cool down and attempted to turn it back on which it did. However within literally around a minute it started to get very very hot so i left it to cool down and told my mum, who then recommended i put it in rice overnight (it probably stayed for about 10 hours). I tried to switch it on but I’m having the same problem now. — Jasmine0102020

Solution: Hi Jasmine0102020. Overheating and random reboot issue are the common indicators of an on-going hardware malfunction so the best thing to do right now is to send it in. A technician needs to check the hardware to assess the damage or identify where the problem lies. Putting the phone in a bag of rice or looking for software solutions at this time won’t fix anything.

Keep in mind that the Galaxy S6 does not have water resistance protection. Dropping it in water for even a second will allow water to seep inside to cause damage. Ideally, you’re supposed to:

  • turn off the phone,
  • remove the battery,
  • take the phone apart by disconnecting the motherboard and cables
  • soak the device in a special alcohol solution
  • dry the parts
  • put everything back in

Sounds like a lot of work? Exactly. And these steps are just the basic steps that you can do. If you left the battery connected long enough, it’s possible that some components may have already been shorted at this time.

Also, corrosion can set in in a matter of hours, especially if you dropped the device in salt water. While corrosion may not immediately result to problems, it can render your phone unusable in the long term.

If bring the device to Samsung service center is out of the question, try to visit a service center that deals with wet electronics. If you’re lucky and the damage is minimal, they may be able to make the phone work again.

Problem 3: Galaxy S6 edge+ won’t turn on

Hello. I left my Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ a day ago with 2% battery. After the entire day, I assumed it went out already, and it did. As I was charging, it showed the red LED light on top plus the battery with thunder etc. but aside from that, nothing else. After a few minutes, the phone itself died turning everything off from the LED light to the screen. I tried resetting my phone like I did before but now it’s not working. Please help. What should I do, I’ve already left it charging for hours and nothing happened.        — Aea

Solution: Hi Aea. Try to see if you can turn the phone back on to alternate boot modes such as Recovery Mode (steps provided above), Download Mode, or safe mode. Any of these modes require that you do a certain hardware button combination. If the phone remains unresponsive after trying them all, consider using another charging cable and charger. If that won’t help either, send the phone in.

Below are the steps on how to boot the device to Download Mode or Safe Mode:

Boot in Download Mode:

  1. Charge the phone for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Press and then hold the Home and Volume DOWN keys, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Samsung Galaxy logo shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume DOWN keys.
  4. Wait until the Download screen appears.
  5. If you can boot the phone in download mode but not in other modes, that means that your only way out may be to flash a stock or custom firmware.
  6. Use Google to look for a guide on how to do it.

Boot in safe mode:

  1. Charge the phone for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Press and hold the Power button.
  3. Once the Samsung Galaxy logo appears, release the Power key and immediately press and hold the Volume Down button.
  4. Continue holding the button until the phone finishes rebooting.
  5. Once you see the text “Safe mode” at the bottom left corner of the screen, release the Volume Down button.
  6. The only difference of safe mode from normal mode is that the former prevents third party apps from running. If you can boot the phone in safe mode but not in normal mode, uninstall all apps until the issue (that prevents you from booting normally) is eliminated.

Problem 4: Galaxy S6 unresponsive, screen is blank, camera area is hot

My phone will not react to anything. The screen is blank, can’t receive calls, can’t turn it on or off, holding down the power and volume and home key does nothing and plugging it in to charge does nothing but make the camera area hot. I did nothing to cause this, just woke up from a 10 minute nap and it was like that, around 30% when i fell asleep so it didn’t die of battery life. — Chris Welsh

Solution: Hi Chris. There’s only so much that you can do for an issue like this. But like what we tell Aea above, make sure that you see to it that it’s not a charger or charging cable issue. Find a known working Samsung charger and see if it works. If you have a wireless charger, you can also try it. If nothing changes, you can then try to see if you can make the phone restart to other boot modes.

In some cases, a simple soft reset can help bring the phone back so be sure to try that as well. Simply press and hold the Power and Volume Down buttons for 12 seconds. If that won’t help either, have the phone checked by a professional.
