Today’s problem: Galaxy J3 screen remains black
Hello. I was recently on my phone playing a game, Stampede, and I tapped an icon on my screen that told me I could double my coins if I watched a video. I tapped the video icon, set my phone down to vacuum my carpet, and picked up my phone and the screen was completely black. I thought that this was because I wasn’t on my phone in a while. I tried turning my phone on by touching the home button and power button but my phone would not turn on. I checked the battery percentage on my phone previous to it not turning on and it was 37%. I don’t think my phone ran out of battery because it usually warns me when I get to 15% battery. I tried charging my phone and calling it but it does not turn on. I have not been charging my phone the past few days with a Samsung charger and I think that might be the case, or it has a virus. Please help me get my J3 turning on again! How to troubleshoot a Galaxy J3 that has a black screen issue
Hi Evan. You’ve got to do some troubleshooting in order to know what the problem really is. In your situation, it must be one of the following:
- a software glitch prevents the device from starting up
- battery is low or has died
- screen is damaged
- there’s an unknown hardware error
Verify if it’s a display problem
Some users usually mistake a bad screen issue with a No Power issue. The former occurs when the screen has sustained obvious signs of damage and stays black, even though the phone still shows turns powers on. The latter (No Power) means that the device is totally out of power — not making sounds, no vibration, no LED light when charging. To distinguish between the two issues, try to see what happens when you charge. If the phone vibrates or displays any LED light, then most probably it’s a screen problem. If the device is totally unresponsive and does not show any signs that it’s turning on, that’s a No Power issue. Either of these cases require repair so you’ll still have to send the phone in no matter what.
Check if the phone can still charge
You mentioned something about not using a Samsung charger lately. In normal circumstances, most Android chargers will work with Samsung devices so that’s not going to cause any problem. However, since you have an issue turning your device back on, it’s a good idea to start troubleshooting by using a known working Samsung charger and charging cable.
If using a Samsung charger won’t fix your issue, or won’t turn the phone on, make sure that you also check the charging port is clean and not clogged by dirt or lint. In some cases, a phone may appear to power on or won’t charge at all because something is preventing the charging cable from charging the device properly. To see if there’s dirt or foreign debris in the charging port, use a magnifier, if possible. If you think there’s something in the port that shouldn’t be there, avoid sticking something to it. Instead, use a can compressed air to dislodge the dirt, lint, or whatever.
Try to boot the device to alternate modes
In case your phone can still charge and shows LED light but the screen remains black all along, try to see if you can turn in on to other boot modes. Your Samsung device can either boot normally or in alternate modes (Recovery Mode and Odin Mode).
Since you are obviously unable to boot your phone to normal mode, you should try to load either Recovery Mode or Odin Mode so you can try to perform follow up troubleshooting. Below are the steps that you need to do.
Boot in Recovery mode:
- Charge the phone for at least 30 minutes.
- Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key.
- When the Samsung Galaxy logo shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
- When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds.
- You can either wipe the cache partition or do a factory reset when in this mode.
Boot in Odin/Download Mode:
- Charge the phone for at least 30 minutes.
- Press and then hold the Home and Volume DOWN keys, then press and hold the Power key.
- When the Samsung Galaxy logo shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume DOWN keys.
- Wait until the Download screen appears.
- If you can boot the phone in download mode but not in other modes, that means that your only way out may be to flash a stock or custom firmware.
- Use Google to look for a guide on how to do it.
Contact Samsung or send the phone in
Remember, there’s only so much that you can do in this case. If your phone remains off, or the screen stays black, you need professional help to fix it. Unless you have the training, tools, and replacement parts, don’t attempt to repair the phone yourself. In a lot of cases, do-it-yourself repair cause more problems afterwards than fixes. Even if you’ll manage to fix the issue on your end, it still doesn’t mean it’s not going to cost you anything. For one, you’ll still have to buy the replacement parts needed to make your phone work again. You’ll also have to purchase the repair kit you’ll need to do the job.
Most importantly, you’ll have to know what needs to be done exactly. Replacing a known damaged part is one thing, knowing or diagnosing what the exact problem is another.
