Problem: screen is black but the indicator light is blinking. I have tried pressing the volume down and the power key and the screen didn’t come back on it is still black. Any other advice? I don’t know what version and i’m not sure as to which carrier the phone is on.
Solution: What you will want to do first in this case is to make sure that the battery of the phone has sufficient charge by following the troubleshooting steps listed below.
- Clean the charging port of the phone using a can of compressed air making sure to remove any dirt or debris present in the port.
- Charge the phone for at least 20 minutes using its wall charger.
- If the phone does not charge then try using a different charging cord and wall charger. You should also try charging the phone from a computer USB port.
- Turn on the phone by pressing and holding both power and volume down buttons for at least 10 seconds.
In case the above steps fails to fix the problem then you should try starting the phone in recovery mode. If the phone works in this mode then the problem might be caused by a software glitch. Try doing a factory reset in this mode. Take note that the reset will erase your phone data.
Should the above steps fail to fix the problem then you will have to bring the phone to a service center and have it checked as this could already be caused by a faulty hardware component.
S7 Heats Up Rapidly
Problem: Do help with Custom ROMS also? My Samsung S7 (GM-G930F) has been going really well since I installed the last release of Renovate ICE. Loved it. Then I installed an official app called Ring to control a wireless doorbell. I am not sure if it started before that but it seemed that the phone starting heating up rapidly after using this app to connect to and connected to the doorbell. I first noticed that the phone started rebooted and stayed in a boot loop and in fact, even seemed to power up after powering off. I then managed to reboot into TWRP recovery but could not restore a backup of the custom or stock firmware. I tried installing the stock firmware using ODIN but the phone still phone boot up and only cools down when as the battery runs out. So I clearly have a bigger problem I can’t recognise. Is this what bricked means? Is the battery damaged? The internal storage damaged? What can I do to get this phone up and running again?
Solution: I recommend that you try doing a factory reset on your phone from the recovery mode. If you are able to backup your phone data before doing the reset then do so. If the issue occurs after the reset then it’s very likely that the problem is caused by a faulty hardware component. You will need to bring the phone to a service center and have it checked.
S7 Cannot Update Software
Problem: I have a Verizon Galaxy S7, switched to T Mobile in Dec. The phone is working, but I cannot update software. Smart Switch also cannot recognize the phone on my computer. Samsung and T mobile tech support are useless and frustratingly incompetent. Can you help?
Solution: If you switched to a different network then it’s very likely that the phone will not be able to access the update servers from its original carrier. To troubleshoot this issue try the following steps listed below.
- Backup your phone data then do a factory reset.
- Manually check for the software update.
- You should also try using Smart Switch to update your phone software.
If no update is available then you should consider flashing your phone with its updated firmware file using Odin. You can download the firmware file from the Sammobile website which is also where you can get instructions on how to flash your phone.
S7 Inconsistent Charging
Problem: Galaxy S7 is experiencing the following issues for the past 2-3 weeks,
1) Inconsistent charging; it appears to be fast charging when it is low on power but as soon as it is over say 75 or 80% then it goes into trickle charging (10 mA to 70 mA measured using Ampere) then literally stops at 94% for hours until it feels like going up to 95% or sometimes 96%.
2) Related to first one; after being stuck in 94% for a while sometimes the charging stops so the battery starts discharging.
I have tried the following,
1) Wiped cached partition
2) Charging in Safe mode, experienced same problem with OEM and Anker combination of power adapters and cables
3) Inspected and cleaned the charging port
4) Samsung support told me to use the “Samsung Member” page where there is a diagnostic tool for the hardware but that simply tells me the battery is “Good”; as confirmed with other battery monitoring app.
5) Battery repair app where the app found 3 blocks that had problem and fixed; re-checked using the app about 10 times at different occasion and there are no further discovery of bad blocks
1) Phone has never been submerged
2) Phone has been dropped before but always had a case on and no immediate service issue after the drop
3) Canadian Carrier – Fido
4) SM-G930W8; Android 7.0; Build ID NRD90M
Solution: You should try using a different charging cord and wall charger to charge the phone. If the issue still persists then I suggest that you backup your phone data then do a factory reset. Once the reset is complete do not install any apps in your phone yet. Try checking first if the issue still occurs. If it does then this is most likely a hardware related problem possibly caused by a faulty power IC or battery. The best thing that you can do right now is to bring the phone to a service center and have it checked.
S7 Stuck In Bootloop
Problem: My phone is stuck in some sort of boot loop- it turns on normally, but restarts every 2 minutes or so. It works normally otherwise, except the keyboard doesn’t appear when i want to enter text. I’ve reset the cache partition and done all of the basic troubleshooting that i could find. The only thing left is to factory reset the phone, but it wont stay on long enough to let me back anything up, so it’s not ideal. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Solution: Does your phone have a microSD card installed? If it does then try removing this as this could be causing the problem.
Another possible factor that can cause this problem is a software glitch. To check if this is the case you should try to backup your phone data using Smart Switch before doing a factory reset in recovery mode.
If the above steps fails to fix the problem then this is most likely caused by a faulty hardware component in which case you will need to bring the phone to a service center and have it checked.
S7 Screen Turns Black When Rotated To Portrait Mode
Problem: Samsung galaxy s7, straight talk/Walmart brand phone. after the latest update for nougat (few months now) any time my phones screen is rotated to side view mode (full screen youtube, camera, large ads) the screen will rotate normally, but when i go back to default vertical screen mode the screen goes black. still on, but just blank. rotate it comes back, normal it goes away. can restart phone and problem persists until i do a wipe cache partition. then it behaves fine until the next time the phone is rotated. performed a factory reset but once i restored it was back. i’ve gone through almost every app and I’m down to almost barebones default phone apps now. before the update the apps i do still have weren’t an issue. also now the play store wont let me download apps i was able to before.
Solution: This appears to be caused by a software glitch. Try checking if a system update is available and update your phone accordingly.
I also suggest that you backup your phone data then do a factory reset. Once the reset is complete do not install any apps in your phone yet. You should first check if the issue still occurs. If it does then this could already be caused by a faulty hardware component in which case you will need to bring the phone to a service center and have it checked.
