These software updates which are constantly released to Android devices are meant to improve the phone performance and to give it more features. While it is generally a good idea to have the device running on the latest software version there are also instances when certain issues can occur which we will be addressing today. In this latest installment of our troubleshooting series we will tackle the Galaxy Note 5 can’t call after Nougat update issue & other related problems.

Note 5 Can’t Call After Nougat Update
Problem: Hi, After 2 years of being with Tmobile I switched to MetroPCS. My phone is a Tmobile Note 5. I updated my OS to 7.0 yesterday. In the last 24 hours, when I try to call someone from my phone, I punch in the number which shows up on the screen and then when I push send, the number is gone and the screen goes back to number keypad. The only way I can call someone is if I restart my phone. This has happened 3 times in the last day. Both Metro and T Mobile say they can’t help me. I would roll back my update but have read that’s a bad idea. Any help you have would be greatly appreciated.
Solution: If the issue disappears whenever you restart the phone then the problem is most likely caused by some form of software glitch possibly due to the update. What you should do first in this case is to check if an app you installed is causing the problem. Start the phone in Safe Mode then check if the issue still occurs in this mode. If it doesn’t then it’s most likely caused by an app. Try updating all of your phone apps by opening the Google Play Store then going to the My Apps section. If all of your apps are already updated but the issue persists then try to find out what app is causing this problem and uninstall it.
If the above steps fails to fix the problem then proceed with the troubleshooting steps listed below.
- Wipe the cache partition of the phone from the recovery mode.
- Backup your phone data then do a factory reset.
Note 5 Freezes After Software Update
Problem: My phone tried to do an update- it told me that it was complete. Now I cannot text anyone- the phone freezes and tells me it isn’t responding- and then reboots itself. I am unable to use most features on my phone. I don’t know where to go to fix it. it also just randomly reboots itself even when I haven’t touched the phone. I need It done asap- as I work from my phone. thanks for your assistance.
Solution: If the issue occured right after a software update then the problem could be caused by some form of old software data that was not completely removed during the update process. What you need to do in this case is to backup your phone data then do a factory reset.
Note 5 Stuck In Samsung Logo After Interrupted Software Update
Problem: Hi, I accidentally tapped the software update on my phone which was already downloaded. its for the Nougat 7.0; I didn’t plan to update it yet since I am out of town and has limited access to the internet. while updating, my phone died (battery drained). I charged it and tried to turn on, but it only turned on up to the Samsung logo. 🙁 please advise what needs to be done.
Solution: If the software update got interrupted and the phone is now stuck in the Samsung logo then the best thing to do right now is to start the phone in recovery mode. From here do the following steps listed below.
- Wipe the cache partition of your phone. Restart the phone then check if the issue still occurs.
- Do a factory reset. Take note that the reset will erase your phone data.
If the above steps fails to fix the problem then the phone might already be bricked. If this is the case then you will need to flash the phone with its updated firmware file. You can download the firmware file of your phone from the Sammobile website where you can also get instructions on how to flash your phone.
Note 5 Not Getting Software Updates
Problem: Note 5 N920I doesn’t get Marshmallow update. I am not in its original carrier (Singtel) but it doesn’t work on Kies or Switch too (it says its not compatible). Also I am having an unusual battery draining problem. I did the factory reset but still it seems that it discharges the battery pretty fast ( normal usage max 10-15 h, when playing a game f.e it goes out entirely in 2 hours Is there a way to see if the battery is damaged? Thank you
Solution: The reason why your phone is not getting any updates is because it does not meet the conditions listed below.
- The phone must not be rooted
- The phone must not be running on a custom software
- If you had this phone unlocked then it should be running on its original carrier.
The best way to get the software update right now is to manually flash it to your phone. Download the updated firmware file for your device from the Sammobile website. You will also get instructions on how to flash your phone from this website.
Regarding the battery of the phone draining quickly you can try to download any of the popular battery stat apps available at the Google Play Store to check your phone battery. Since these apps are not 100% accurate I would also suggest that you have the battery of your phone replaced with a new one.
Note 5 Stuck In Startup Screen After Flashing
Problem: Hello,I am currently using Galaxy Note 5 SM-N920C (Android 7.0). I rooted my phone & installed custom ROM. I wanted back to stock firmware.I flashed correct firmware. But after flashing successfully it stucked on boot animation & can’t power it off. Is there any way to solve & use my phone again?Plz reply urgently..
Solution: For this particular issue you will need to access the recovery mode then wipe the cache partition of the phone. Once this is done do a factory reset also in this mode. Check if the issue still occurs. If it does then you will need to flash your phone again. Download a fresh copy of the updated firmware file of your phone from the Sammobile website and use this file to flash your phone.
Note 5 Display Flickers After Software Update
Problem: Hi. Just after the nougat 7.0 update my display started flickering even while it was downloading the update. This only happens when there are animations or a video is playing. The display flickers about and only stops if i stop or pause the video. Plz provide all potential solutions
Solution: For this particular issue you should try updating your phone apps first as the problem could be caused by an app that’s not optimized to run on the Nougat update. To update your apps open the Google Play Store then go to the My Apps section.
If the problem still occurs even after all your apps are updated then proceed with the troubleshooting steps listed below.
- Start the phone in Safe Mode then check if the issue occurs in this mode. If it doesn’t then it could be caused by an app you downloaded. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.
- Wipe the cache partition of your phone from the recovery mode.
- Backup your phone data then do a factory reset.
Note 5 Keyboard Keeps Resetting After Update
Problem: One issue I don’t like is that my phone automatically updates itself at night even if i don’t tell it to…my main issue is my keyboard has changed since the auto update…it doesn’t work as well…keeps resetting from the changes I make…and also does not follow the changes I’ve made to the settings…and I can no longer use voice to text…just typing this has been a struggle…I want my old keyboard back…for how much I use my keyboard for my work this is a major problem
Solution: For this particular problem you should try to clear the cache and data of the keyboard app as the problem could be caused by some corrupt data in the keyboard app. If the issue remains then you need to backup your phone data then do a factory reset.
Note 5 Keeps On Updating
Problem: I have updated all my apps. i have updated my phone as well. it finishes off updating and then powers on but then it shows that the software needs to update again. So after every software update it updates again.
Solution: For this issue you need to check if the update version is different. If it is then let the phone do the update. However, if the version is the same then this could already be caused by a software glitch. You should try restarting your phone first then check if this fixes the problem. If it doesn’t then you will have to backup your phone data then do a factory reset.
