Why does my HTC U11 not turning on and how to fix it (easy steps)

Power issues in mobile devices are usually tied to a faulty hardware, particularly a bad battery. However there are also other cases where a device refuses to power on due to a software malfunction. Corrupted data that’s causing an app to crash can also lead to the same problem. But in this case, the device is able to turn on however it gets stuck on a black screen because of the faulty application. Software updates containing bugs can also prevent your phone from turning after the update installation. Mobile devices like Android smartphones are prone to this issue.

That being said, if ever you bump into a situation in which your phone just won’t turn on, don’t rush to a service center yet. Instead, try some workarounds to troubleshoot and fix the problem on your end. Here in this post, I have mapped out some suggested workarounds and possible solutions to power issues on a particular Android smartphone, the HTC U11. If you own this device and encounter the same issue, then you may refer to the following procedures and troubleshoot the problem at home. Read on and get helped.

Troubleshooting an HTC U11 that won’t turn on


Highlighted below are generic solutions or standard procedures to deal with power issues on your HTC U11 smartphone. It won’t hurt to give them a try and see what happens.

Before you begin, verify and ensure that the problem you have with your phone is not on charging. It’s possible that your phone has completely ran out of power and refuses to charge. Many people have experienced this scenario in which they first have thought that their phone is not turning on. But then it turned out that what they’ve had was a charging issue instead of power. To rule this out from the possible causes, try to connect your HTC U11 to a power source then let it charge for at least an hour.

Also make sure that you are using the original HTC-branded charger and cable. Care to check the wall socket to make sure that the charger is receiving power. Note that it may take up to 2 minutes for the notification LED or charging indicator to change especially if the batter has been totally drained.
If you have confirmed that your device is charging, allow it to have enough power then press and hold the Power button for about 10 to 15 seconds.

First method: Force your HTC U11 to restart (soft reset).

A forced restart can help rectify minor glitches that might have prevented your device from performing its boot up routine.

If performed correctly, a forced restart will not erase any information stored on the phone. To make sure you are doing it right, follow these steps:

  1. Press and hold the Power and Volume Down buttons together until your phone vibrates then release the buttons.
  2. You may need to press and hold the buttons for about 12 to 15 seconds before you hear the phone vibrates.

If that won’t work, try to connect your HTC U11 to a charger then do a forced restart again.

Second method: Boot into recovery mode and wipe cache partition.

Often times, performing a wipe cache partition can help fix a device that is not working correctly due to software glitches or corrupt system data. As the name implies, the process will clear the cache partition (phone storage containing temporary files or cache) on your phone. Unlike a master reset or factory reset, wiping the cache partition does not affect your personal data. You can give it a try then see what happens. Here’s how:

  1. Press and hold the Volume Down key.
  2. Press the Power button until the phone vibrates then release the Power button.
  3. Keep holding the Volume Down key.
  4. When the screen turns black with red and blue lines of text showing up, release the Volume Down key.
  5. Press the Volume Down key repeatedly until the Reboot to bootloader option is highlighted.
  6. Then press the Power button to confirm selection.
  7. Your phone will now display a white screen with colored text.
  8. Press the Volume Down key repeatedly until the Boot to Recovery Mode option is highlighted.
  9. Then press the Power button to confirm selection.
  10. Press and hold the Power button then press and release the Volume Up key.
  11. Release the Power button then press the Volume Down key repeatedly until the Wipe Cache Partition option is highlighted.
  12. Then press the Power button again to confirm selection.
  13. Press the Volume Down key to select Yes.
  14. Finally, press the Power button again to select Reboot System Now.

Wait and see if your HTC U11 is now able to boot up successfully after wiping the cache partition using recovery mode.

Third method: Backup data and try to perform a factory reset or master reset.

A factory reset might be needed if a complex software issue is causing your device to not power on. A factory reset or master reset will revert your phone back to its initial state or factory defaults. That being said, all your data stored on the phone will be erased along with any bugs and broken files. Should you wish to give it a try, be sure to backup your data if you can. Here’s how:

  1. If you haven’t already, download and install the HTC Sync Manager app on your computer. Be sure to use the latest version of the application. You can check for updates and download a new version of HTC Sync Manager if necessary.
  2. Connect your HTC U11 to your computer using the original USB cable.
  3. Wait until your phone is successfully mounted as media storage and you should see your HTC U11 phone under the Computer screen on your PC. If you don’t see your phone in that window, try to go to Control Panel-> Device Manager on your computer then scroll down to Portable Devices. It should appear in the list under this section.
  4. Launch the HTC Sync Manager app and log in as an administrator.
  5. If prompted by User Account Control, click Yes to apply permission. Doing so will let the program run with full permission as an administrator.
  6. Connect your phone again to your computer and check if the HTC Sync Manager recognizes your device.

If it does, follow the onscreen instructions to backup your data from your phone to your computer. Once you’ve successfully created the backup, you may now proceed with the factory reset or master reset through recovery mode. Here’s how:

  1. Press and hold the Power button for about 10 seconds.
  2. Then press and hold the Volume Down and Power button for a few seconds more until the menu options appear on the screen.
  3. Use the Volume keys to select the Reboot to Bootloader option.
  4. Press the Power button to confirm selection.
  5. Press the Volume Down key to select Boot to Recovery Mode then press the Power button to confirm.
  6. Hold down the Power button as soon as the phone with exclamation point appears.
  7. Press and release the Volume Up key while holding down the Power button. Doing so will let you get into Recovery mode.
  8. Use the Volume keys to scroll and select the Wipe data/factory reset from the Recovery menu options.
  9. Then press the Power button to confirm selection.
  10. Select Yes — delete all user data option.
  11. Then select Reboot system now to restart your phone.

If your HTC U11 is able to power on after the reset, proceed with the initial setup. Otherwise, escalate the problem and seek further assistance and recommendations.
