Until recently, we only received sporadic issues about the #GalaxyS8 when it comes to water damage, primarily due to the fact that the phone is water-resistant. Today’s post answers a specific battery drain issue due to water damage case as well as one problem about loss of fast charging feature. We hope that this post will serve as a good guide for those experiencing the same or similar issues in their phones.

Problem 1: Galaxy S8 that was dropped in water losing battery fast
My device was dropped in water about 7 hours before charging. It seems to run out of battery quicker than it used to and when I charged the phone it said that it was slow charging. I used the charger that came with the device. I dried and vacuumed for a minute. Please help. I’m not sure about android version and the carrier by the way. — Gary Jeong
Solution: Hi Gary. Sometimes, devices may seem to drain battery power quickly than expected because:
- apps may have recently changed how they behave and and use computing resources,
- the operating system receives a new update which may have affected power consumption, or
- there’s an unknown hardware malfunction that affects the battery or the phone’s charging ability.
All these three items are some of the possible reasons why your phone may be behaving like the way you describe it to us. There can be other totally different reasons that we’re not aware of. Hence, it’s important that you revisit the history of events that occur in your device. Telling us that your phone appears to be losing battery quicker does not help at all. We need more information than that.
If you suspect that the phone may be water damaged, that’s not totally impossible. Yes, your Galaxy S8 is water-resistant but that doesn’t mean it can’t be water damaged at all. It’s possible that your phone’s water resistance protection may have been compromised before after you accidentally dropped it to a hard surface. It’s not uncommon for water resistant phones to succumb to water damage after hitting a toilet bowl hard first. We have absolutely no idea how your phone got wet so you have to do your own research about this possibility.
Generally, the only troubleshooting any end-user can do on their phones is to perform software troubleshooting. In your case, that means:
- clearing the system cache
- observing the phone in safe mode
- wiping the phone with factory reset
If these three important steps won’t help, you should contact Samsung so you can submit the phone for hardware inspection.
How to clear a Galaxy S8 system cache
A corrupted system cache can sometimes cause all kinds of problems so it’s good if you can maintain its good state all the time. To do that, you want to clear the cache partition so the system cache in it will be deleted. Your phone will rebuild the cache over time so you don’t need to worry about creating a new one. The system cache is composed of temporary files only so you don’t need to worry about your photos, videos, etc from getting wiped out.
To clear your S8 system cache, kindly do these steps:
- Turn off the device.
- Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
- When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
- Press the Volume down key to highlight wipe cache partition.
- Press the Power key to select.
- Press the Volume down key to highlight “yes” and press the Power key to select.
- When the wipe cache partition is complete, Reboot system now is highlighted.
- Press the Power key to restart the device.
Observe your S8 while on safe mode
If you did not install any new app recently and the battery seem to have started to drain faster out of the blue, it’s possible that one of the third party apps you installed may be to blame. To check, you need to restart your phone to Safe Mode and observe it. While Safe Mode is enabled, all downloaded and installed (third party) apps, meaning those that are not from Samsung, Google, or carrier, will be blocked from running. Under safe mode condition, it is expected that the battery will last way longer than it normally should be. If it continues to drain faster though than can be an indicator of a hardware issue. This means that it’s not third party apps that’s bleeding the battery dry faster but probably a hardware error in the battery itself, or some other unknown hardware malfunction.
To boot your S8 to safe mode, follow these steps:
- Turn the device off.
- Press and hold the Power key past the model name screen.
- When “SAMSUNG” appears on the screen, release the Power key.
- Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
- Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
- Safe mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.
- Release the Volume down key when you see Safe Mode.
- Uninstall apps that are causing a problem.
Alternatively, you can try to uninstall apps that tend to use a lot of power even when you’re not actively using them. These apps include games, social networking apps, email apps, messaging apps, shopping apps, productivity apps, and even security (antivirus) apps. If you recently installed one or two apps prior to noticing the battery drain issue, consider removing them from the system and see how the battery work.
Wipe the phone clean via factory reset
Finally, don’t hesitate to perform a factory reset and observe the phone. Like in safe mode, you want to know if there’s a difference in battery use when the phone’s software is reset to their defaults or not.
To factory reset your S8, follow these steps.
- Create a backup of your important files.
- From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
- Tap Settings > Cloud and accounts.
- Tap Backup and restore.
- If desired, tap Back up my data to move the slider to ON or OFF.
- If desired, tap Restore to move the slider to ON or OFF.
- Tap the back button to the Settings menu and tap General Management > Reset > Factory data reset.
- Tap Reset device.
- If you have screen lock turned on, enter your credentials.
- Tap Continue.
- Tap Delete all.
- Restart the phone and observe how it works for 24 hours. Should the battery continue to
drain faster than expected, even when there are no apps installed, you can assume bad hardware is causing it. In this case, contact Samsung and let them handle the situation. You’ll most likely end up with a phone replacement.
If your battery will work normally during the 24-hour observation period but then reverts to its problematic state after installing apps, you can bet app is to blame. Do the process of elimination to identify the culprit and make sure not to install that app again in your phone.

Problem 2: Galaxy S8 fast charging won’t work
Galaxy S8 will not fast charge most of the time. Almost everytime I plug it in, it will fast charge for about 3 seconds then stops charging all together and then switches to cable charging. At first I figure this was my adapter/usb but I bought a new adapter/usb and it still does it. Sometimes it will fast charge but most of the time it stops and switches to cable charging. — Malaury
Solution: Hi Malaury. First of all, we want to state an observable fact about fast charging: it does not work all the time. Even with a perfectly working cable, adapter, and phone, we’ve observed that fast charging in Galaxy S8 can sometimes be a hit-and-miss situation. Your best chance of ensuring that fast charging feature works is by turning off the screen and stop using the phone while it’s charging. Don’t expect fast charging to work while you’re using the device. This is definitely not ideal but this a lot of S8 users since last year were experiencing fast charging issues. It’s a problem that’s beyond our ability to fix but just in case you haven’t tried the basics first, let’s have a brief discussion.
Galaxy S8 fast charging is not reliable
Samsung has no official word on this but based on observations and reports from a lot of users since 2017, Galaxy S8 fast charging feature cannot be counted upon at all. There seems to be no clear pattern for a lot anecdotal cases we’ve come across so we’re not able to determine what the exact reason for the problem is. Below are the three of the common causes of fast charging failure though so we encourage you to take a look at them and see if it’s possible that you have any of them.
Fast charging broken cause #1: charging accessories (cable and adapter) are defective
Even if there’s no visible or obvious sign of damage to the charging cable or adapter, any of them can still go bad. If you have another set of original Samsung charging cable and adapter for the S8, use it and see if it works or not.
Fast charging broken cause #2: charging port is bad
Like the charging cable and adapter, the other most common reason for fast charging and charging problems is a broke charging port. Try to use a magnifier or similar tool to see if there’s a broken pin or dirt/lint inside.
If your phone has recently been near water, make sure that you clean the charging port area and air dry it.
Fast charging broken cause #3: unknown hardware error
Samsung Galaxy devices are not immune to shocks following an accidental drop or physical impact. In some cases, negative effects may show right away while at times, it may take a long time to manifest. Either way, you should consider the possibility of a hardware issue if your phone has a history of being dropped or hit by a hard object. Make sure to contact Samsung if fast charging feature will continue to remain unfixed after some time.
Use wireless fast charger
As a workaround, you can try to charge your phone wirelessly to fast charge it. Fast wireless charging is not as fast as fast cable charging so it can still take longer time to fast charge your device. It’s obviously not a permanent fix so be sure to contact Samsung if all our suggestions in this post won’t work.
