There quite a few reports from owners who have encountered having Settings stuck in their Galaxy S3, though the problem is not so common. Nevertheless, we felt the need to address this issue considering once it occurs the owner cannot do much with his phone; in other words, the problem is very annoying to the point that the user will become terribly frustrated.
Not only does the Settings app fail, it could also cause freezing for a few seconds or even lag. The Settings app covers a wide array of Android services including Applications Manager, network and connectivity settings, etc. Before we a little farther into resolving this issue, here is one email from our reader that describes exactly what the problem is all about:

What To Do When Galaxy S3 Settings Crash
It is more likely that apps (or just one app) have something to do when Settings crash in Galaxy S3. It could have been easier to fix if you can open the Applications Manager to force-stop a problematic app. But since all odds are against you when this problem occurs, you’ll have to isolate the problem to know where to start.
First, determine if it was a third-party app that’s causing the problem. To do it, you need to boot your phone into Safe Mode so that third-party apps won’t intervene with the Android’s operations. Here’s how you boot Galaxy S3 to Safe Mode:
- Turn the phone off.
- Press and hold the Power button until Samsung logo appears.
- With the logo on the screen, press and hold the Volume Down button until Safe Mode appears on the lower-left corner of the screen.
Now, try to open Settings and wait to see if it crashes again. If it won’t, then you already know that the problem is not with the stock apps. If you can recall the apps you recently installed before the problem occurred, try to uninstall them and then boot to Normal Mode. Launch Settings and wait to see if it crashes. If it won’t, the problem is solved but if it does, continue troubleshooting.
- Boot to Safe Mode again.
- From the Home screen, tap the Menu key.
- Choose Settings and scroll to Applications Manager.
- Swipe left to choose All tab.
- Scroll to and tap Settings.
- Tap Clear Data. (NOTE: All your personal settings will be lost by doing this.)
- Reboot phone to Normal Mode and check if Settings still crashes.
- If it does, follow steps from 1 to 5 and look for Google Framework Services and clear both its data and cache.
- If all else fail, perform a master reset (Factory Reset). (NOTE: All your data may be lost by doing this so back them up first.)
What if Settings still crashes even in Safe Mode?
Do a factory reset right there and then as you can’t do anything about it.
