If you can, kindly include the exact error messages you are getting to give us an idea where to start. Problem 1: AT&T Galaxy S7 can’t receive SMS from multiple contacts
I have AT&T. I also have a Galaxy S7. I recently changed my number and it automatically updated. Since the update my girlfriend got the S8 Active and isn’t able to send me text. It gives her a red (!). It does the same with my coworkers that also have a Samsung device… I have deleted cache and data, rest countless times. I’ve even got a insurance claim and got a different s7. Still red (!) Shows up when trying to send me a text from a Samsung device.. my girlfriend had to turn off her Advanced Messaging plus, delete me as a contact, to be able to send me a text. I’m not going to ask everyone in my contacts to do that. I’m a manager at longhorns steakhouse and my other 3 managers all have Samsung devices and I’m not able to get any of their text. It’s beginning to get frustrating enough to go iPhone. And I switched 5 years ago from iphone to galaxy. I hate iPhones but this is interrupting my job. Please please tell me you have a solution to this. Is it a setting is it my SIM card? It’s not my network, it’s all good on their end; I’ve called twice. I hope you can help before I have to go to the dreaded iphone….. Thank you. — Matt Gillespie
Solution: Hi Matt. Since you mentioned you’re with AT&T and Advanced Messaging Plus together, it’s possible that the issue may be caused by the messaging app you’re using. To troubleshoot the problem, these are the things that you must do:
If you’re using AT&T’s Advanced Messaging app, try wiping its cache and data
The first step in fixing your problem is by wiping the cache and data of the messaging app you’re using. Keep in mind that wiping an app’s data will erase your text messages. Unless they are stored in a cloud service somewhere, you’ll lose them. Make sure to back them up before attempting an app cache and data wipe.
Below are the steps on how to wipe an app’s cache and data:
- Open the Settings menu either through your notification shade (drop-down) or through the Settings app in your app drawer.
- Navigate down to Apps. This may be renamed to something like Applications or Application Manager in OEM skinned versions of Android 6 or 7.
- Once in there, look for the application and tap it.
- You’ll now see a list of stuff that gives you information about the app, including Storage, Permissions, Memory Use, and more. These are all clickable items. You’ll want to click on Storage.
- You should now clearly see the Clear Cache and Clear Data buttons for the application. Try to wipe the cache first, then check if your friends can now send you a text message. If nothing works, do the app data wipe.
Use another messaging app
Wiping an app’s data is the virtual equivalent of removing and reinstalling an app. If the steps above won’t fix the problem though, the next device troubleshooting that you must do is to use a different messaging app. We understand AT&T-branded S7 devices may nominate their own Advanced Messaging app as default but you should still be able to use Samsung’s own Messages app. To use Samsung Messages app as default, kindly do these steps:
- Open Settings app.
- Tap Apps.
- Tap More settings icon at the upper right hand side (three dot icon).
- Tap Default apps.
- Tap Messaging app.
- There should be at least two apps in the list, one of them being Messages. Tap it to select and make it as default messaging app.
Alternatively, you can use third party messaging apps to achieve the same goal — to see if there’s a problem with AT&T’s Advanced Messaging app. Just visit Google Play Store and look for free messaging apps.
Use another SIM card
We don’t think it’s a device issue but to really confirm if it is, you can use another AT&T SIM card and insert it in your phone. This way you’ll know if the current SIM card is problematic or not. If possible, borrow your girlfriend’s SIM card and insert it in your phone. If messaging works, get a new SIM card. If text messaging continues to fail with a second SIM, contact AT&T for further support. There may be a firmware glitch that causes SMS to fail in the current device.
Problem 2: Galaxy S7 SMS Delivery Report and Read Report status
Hello. I’ve sent a couple of text messages from my Galaxy S7 to three people and have requested delivery and read receipts on all of them. The messages have been quite long so have shown as MMS. When I hold the messages down (on my phone) to view message details, both the Delivery Report and Read Report status show as Requested (on all of them). Could you tell me what this means please? I sent a test text to my mum’s mobile which was next to mine at the time so I know she received the message and it was opened and read (I opened it) however when I checked the details on my phone both Delivery and Read reports show as Requested. I wondered if the recipients had blocked my number but given I’m getting the same result sending to my mum’s mobile number I don’t think that being blocked is necessarily the answer.
I’m sending from an Australian mobile number to other Australian mobile numbers, one of the recipients maybe in NZ at the moment so out of the country, but not sure. Don’t know if any of this info is helpful. Thanks for your help. — Rachel
Solution: Hi Rachel. Delivery report and Read report are SMS status reports that implemented by networks involved. If you set your device to request for confirmation for both Delivery report and Read report, it means that you’re asking the receiving network to give you a feedback to these requests. They will either comply or not. If their system is set to respond to such requests, you may receive the feedback. Otherwise, the “Requested” status remains even if the recipient has already read your message. Carriers are not obligated to respond to delivery and read report requests.
Problem 3: Galaxy S7 not receiving SMS
Hello. I have been having problems with my Galaxy S7 not receiving text but it’s not consistent. At first it was once upon a few days that people would say they texted me something but i never receive it. Then it got to halfway through a conversation I would suddenly not get something. And now I usually don’t get text when others prompt to text first after a while of not texting. I followed the troubleshooting guide but i can’t find the delete old messages button in the text settings. Also the app is set to delete messages when 1000 text are reached and i’m having no memory issues. I’ve also recently changed network provider since I thought that was the problem, got a new SIM card, but still same problem. I have even reset the phone to standard settings and it didn’t work. If you would have any other idea on how to fix this problem it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Greetings. — Wesley Theuns
Solution: Hi Wesley. It’s difficult to diagnose where exactly a problem like this lies since there’s no way to get a complete system log of the device and your carrier’s network as well. The cause can very well be found in the network just as easily in a device. If you’re 100% positive that you’ve already deleted old messages and the messaging app’s inbox can still receive new ones, consider doing a factory reset.
Before you do this drastic device troubleshooting, try to see if the problem occurs with multiple contacts. If you’re only having a problem with one contact, there’s a chance the issue may be network-related, or something from the sender’s side. On the other hand, if the issue occurs with multiple contacts, it may be a device problem. Do a factory reset and see what happens. If the issue occurs again after that, ask your carrier for help.
To factory reset your Galaxy S7, follow these steps:
- Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S7.
- Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key.
- When the Samsung Galaxy S7 shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
- When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds.
- Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
- Once highlighted, you may press the Power key to select it.
- Now highlight the option Yes — delete all user data using the Volume Down key and press the Power button to select it.
- Wait until your phone is finished doing the Master Reset. Once completed, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and press the Power key.
- The phone will now reboot longer than usual.
