Galaxy Note 8 mobile data keeps disconnecting, wifi drops over and over again, other issues

Problem 1: Galaxy Note 8 mobile data keeps disconnecting

Hello sir. I recently acquired a new Note 8 and I have a very frustrating problem. The 4G mobile network is dropping suddenly after 30 seconds. After a restart, the network came back, but only for the 30 seconds. I called Samsung, I did a factory reset, I checked all the roaming and data settings. I called T-Mobile, and is almost a week since they promised to call me back, and they didn’t. The SIM, if I am putting it in another device, is working properly. Sometimes it is working half day … If I am opening the tune in in those first 30 seconds that I have internet, 4G does not drop, but in the moment I am closing tune in, is gone, so I guess is a setting that is not properly set. If you have some ideas, it would be much appreciated. Thank you. — Ray

Solution: Hi Ray. If the problem did not go away after a factory reset, it’s possible that the cause is a third party app that you re-installed after the reset. Since you seemed to have identified the trigger of the bug (when you close TuneIn app), it’s very likely that the issue will go away when the phone is in safe mode. Safe mode blocks third party apps from running so if mobile data works normally when your Note 8 is in safe mode, that’s a confirmation of our hunch.

To restart the phone to safe mode, follow these steps:

  1. Turn the device off.
  2. Press and hold the Power key past the model name screen.
  3. When “SAMSUNG” appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  4. Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  5. Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  6. Safe mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.
  7. Release the Volume down key when you see Safe Mode.

If you think that a third party app is causing the problem, you need to identify it by uninstalling apps one by one. Be sure to observe how mobile data works after every uninstallation. If you have a lot of apps installed, this process can take a long time but unfortunately, there’s no other way to do the job.

Alternatively, you can do another round of factory reset and observe how mobile data works when there are no third party apps installed. It’s basically the same process as when booting to safe mode. The only difference is that you start to pinpoint the offending app by wiping the phone first.

Once you’ve identified the bad app, you’ll want to prevent this problem from developing again in the future by making sure that you only install apps from trusted developers. Remember, apps, just like any real-world products, are not perfect. If you’re not careful what app to install, it’s only a matter of time before you’ll encounter problems.

Problem 2: Galaxy Note 8 won’t connect to the internet when out of wifi range

When away from a wifi source, my new Note 8 will not connect to the internet or allow any apps to pull any information from the internet. When going through all settings, there was a microcell option. When I touch that, it says failed to connect to AT&T microcell. I’m not sure if this has anything to do with it. Mobile data is turned on. Still no mobile data connection. — Joshuadickens78

Solution: Hi Joshuadickens78. Wifi is restricted by its range as its source is usually a fixed point, like a router in a home. Thus, it’s normal that your phone won’t have internet connection at all if it’s not in range with your router.

The only way to connect to the internet in your phone when it’s outside a wifi network is by using mobile data. Mobile data is however not free and must be activated by your carrier. So, the first troubleshooting step that we would like you to do is to ensure that you have a working mobile data connection in your account. This is something that only your carrier can do so be sure to contact them. This is a must do troubleshooting step when dealing with mobile data problems.

As long as you are in a location with good 3G or 4G coverage and mobile data is activated under your account, you should be able to connect to the internet.

If you are 100% that the device is getting good 3G or 4G signal (must have at least 3 signal bars) and mobile data is active, then the cause of the problem is probably an app or operating system bug. To check, you’ll want to do a factory reset. Here’s how:

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  4. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight “wipe data / factory reset.
  5. Press Power button to select.
  6. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  7. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  8. When the master reset is complete, “Reboot system now” is highlighted.
  9. Press the Power key to restart the device.

Problem 3: How to check Note 8 mobile data subscription and other information

Hi. I bought my Note 8 on Samsung store last 7 of October 2017. I have a concern about billing cycle and payment for data usage which has a limit of 2GB. I use a prepaid SIM card for this phone. May i know what is this for and what is that billing cycle all about??? I didn’t subscribe to a promo or plan either. Thanks. — Johnnatindim5

Solution: Hi Johnnatindim5. Only your carrier (the company that supplies your SIM card) can give you the answers you need. Information about your mobile data subscriptions and data usage are not available for third party teams like us. You must talk to your carrier so they can advise you accordingly.

Problem 4: Galaxy Note 8 wifi drops over and over again

Nice to read your articles but it seems that am having some different type of problem. I have just bought a Note 8 and am experiencing drop in wifi over and over again.

Also, i would like to mention that i updated its firmware as update was available. First it wasn’t connecting to wifi at all but it was showing “Secured and saved” status. If i turn off and on the wifi in my phone it is connected to wifi but not opening anything like Play Store, Google or anything. I have switched off smart switch but it is not helping either. It is working fine on mobile internet but not on wifi. Can you please help? — Hammad Raza

Solution: Hi Hammad. Try to see if wiping the cache partition will help. Doing so will delete the current system cache and replace it with a new one. Sometimes, a corrupted system cache can lead to all sorts of problems so refreshing the system cache is a good first step. To wipe the cache partition, follow these steps:

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  4. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight wipe cache partition.
  5. Press Power button to select.
  6. Press the Volume down key until ‘yes’ is highlighted and press the Power button.
  7. When the wipe cache partition is complete, “Reboot system now” is highlighted.
  8. Press the Power key to restart the device.

Wipe the phone with factory reset

Should a cache partition wipe won’t help, the next possible solution is factory reset. It’s a necessary step since you recently installed a system update. With factory reset, all software settings  including that of wifi will be returned to defaults. With all software settings back to their known working state, we expect wifi to work normally again. If an operating system bug has developed, or if a bad third party app is causing the problem, factory reset should help remove it. Refer to the steps above on how to do it.

Send the phone in

Remember, the phone’s wifi function has a hardware component. If factory reset won’t fix the problem at all, then that means that bad hardware must be to blame. You should contact Samsung or the retailer to have the phone repaired or replaced.
