Problem 1: Galaxy Note 4 can’t receive original group message from iPhone users, Bluetooth won’t stay connected
When an iPhone user sends a group text, I get some of the groups answers but I never get the original message.
Also Bluetooth will not STAY connected. When I look at Bluetooth, settings the on/off switch keeps toggling so connections go off and on. — Wingnut0362
Solution: Hi Wingnut0362. For your first issue regarding not being able to receive the original group message, the problem is not in your end. The original sender of the group message must have initially sent the message via iMessage. This means that only iOS devices can receive it. Once the original sender realizes the mistake, he or she must have sent the message again in regular SMS. Another scenario that we can think of is that another non-iOS user must have joined the group and only this non-iOS device is able to send responses to you. Make sure that you talk to the original sender and tell him or her to send a group message via regular text.
For the second issue, the problem can be due to an operating system bug. Make sure that you wipe the phone clean via factory reset. Make sure that you create a backup of your personal files before resetting the phone.
- Turn off the Galaxy Note 4 completely.
- Press and hold the Volume Up and the Home keys together, then press and hold the Power key.
- When the Note 4 vibrates, release both the Home and Power keys but continue holding the Volume Up key.
- When the Android System Recovery shows on the screen, release the Vol Up key.
- Using the Volume Down key, highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’ and press the Power key to select it.
- Now highlight Yes — delete all user data using the Vol Down key and press the Power key to begin the reset.
- When the master reset is complete, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and hit the Power key.
- The Note 4 will restart but it will be longer than usual. When it reaches the Home screen, then begin your setup.
- Check how Bluetooth works without installing any apps.
This issue can be caused by an app as well. Be sure to test Bluetooth functionality before right after a factory reset. If it works normally when there are no apps installed, you should use the process of elimination to identify which of your apps is causing the problem.
Problem 2: Galaxy Note 4 can’t delete conversation from messaging app
I’ve had my Note 4 for a little more or less than 2 years. My messaging app will not let me delete old text messages that are big. If a conversation in messaging is too big messaging will freeze. My entire phone won’t work and I have to complete restart my phone and even after that the app still doesn’t work (sometimes). I don’t know what to do, messaging is taking up a lot of my memory on my phone. I have not tried a factory restart as of yet. — Jess
Solution: Hi Jess. If you want to put off factory reset at this time, you can deal with the messaging app problem by simply wiping its cache first. If that won’t work, try deleting its data. Here are the steps:
- Open the Settings menu either through your notification shade (drop-down) or through the Settings app in your app drawer.
- Navigate down to “Apps”. This may be renamed to something like Applications or Application Manager in OEM skinned versions of Android 6 or 7.
- Once in there, click on an application.
- You’ll now see a list of stuff that gives you information about the app, including Storage, Permissions, Memory Use, and more. These are all clickable items. You’ll want to click on Storage.
- You should now clearly see the Clear Cache and Clear Data buttons for the application.
Problem 3: Galaxy Note 4 can’t send SMS
My wife and I have the same type Samsung Note 4 phones. We both send a text at same time. Her texts goes ok but mine shows blue box that says 15 min delay. I touch the box to close it and hit send again and it does it again. Sometimes I do this several times before it goes and other times I lose the text. I tried factory reset and hitting the : to see if there is a text in the hold area waiting to be sent but I still can not send a text message most times. — Dregan6391
Solution: Hi Dregan6391. Your problem is most probably caused by a third party app or service. To ensure that it’s not a messaging app issue though, you have to wipe the app’s cache and data first (refer to the steps above). After that, restart the device to safe mode. Here’s how:
- Turn off the phone completely.
- Press and hold the Power key and the Volume Down key.
- When the phone starts to boot, release the Power key but continue holding the Vol Down key until the phone finished restarting.
- Safe mode will be display at the lower left corner; you may release the Volume Down key now.
Remember, safe mode blocks third party apps and services. If your SMS will send normally while the phone is in this mode, uninstall third party apps until the issue is eliminated.
Problem 4: Galaxy Note 4 messaging app lags when sending SMS for one contact
The issue came with the AT&T software update i ran about a month ago. I should’ve known it was a bad update when it asked me to update 3 times in a row, each saying it was successful. Somehow it brought back a bunch of pictures I deleted in my Gallery from my camera and other folders and the worst is that my main contact is the slowest person to text. It lags so bad that I’m to the point where I refuse to use that orange ATT messages app to communicate with him. if i ignore the lag and keep typing, it will not show anything I’m typing until i pause but then I see that what I typed was duplicated 2, sometimes 3 times. I have absolutely NO problem with anyone else I text. Deleting 400 messages and about 50 picture messages in our thread didn’t help the issue whatsoever. The reason we communicate so much is because it’s my husband, and you better believe if something were to ever happen to him, I would rely on our text thread to remember and relive those beautiful things he said to me, on an average day. So yes, I save them all.
I do not turn on the setting in messages to back them up or sync them to the AT&T cloud because I feel they don’t have any business to know what is said in my messages, and you “backup” to the web or to some company, it’s obvious that it’s not private anymore. I don’t need AT&T to have my conversations and AT&T should have no need for them either.
I also have Facebook messenger settings set up to not allow access to my text messages through AT&T, so there shouldn’t be any other app causing this problem. It’s the AT&T software update. Perhaps because they are trying to push towards using wifi to make texts and calls, but that won’t fly. I have they’re new option to share larger files, get read receipts and see when someone is replying – all turned off. I don’t share with others when i have read their messages – that’s turned off too. There are no messages stored on my SIM card. I have no messages locked or marked as spam (that’s all new). Spam filter off, cell broadcast off, signature off, character count off, delete old messages off. Pretty much only Push Messages is ON…
Anyways, i’ve done the soft restart many times but seriously, do i need to do it 2 or 3 times a day to be able to text my husband without delay? Does someone let AT&T software people know they messed up? AT&T in the US. Samsung Galaxy Note 4. Marshmallow Android version. August 3, 2017. — Lynzlou33
Solution: Hi Lynzlou33. We understand how frustrating it can be to experience lag when composing a text or a text response but if the problem only occurs when you’re working with a certain conversation thread, you really have to ask yourself if you’re willing to sacrifice efficiency for convenience. Whether you want it or not, you really want to do delete some, if not the entire conversation thread to experience normal texting speed. Your experience can be expected once a certain thread has reached its designed capacity. The more you add responses, the smaller the allowable memory for the thread becomes, which also results to lag. We suggest that you back your messages up using another app, or Samsung Smart Switch if you don’t want to store them in AT&T’s cloud service.
