Doogee BL5000 Sleek Budget Large Battery Smartphone Review

The originally Spanish company Doogee has been a major player on the budget Android market for the past few years, releasing smartphones characterized by a balance of performance, design, and price. Doogee’s latest Android smartphone, the BL5000, is now available for sale, and it seems like it could be the right choice for anyone who’s looking for an affordable mid-range smartphone with a very long battery life.

Build and Design

In the promotional materials for the smartphone, Doogee proudly flaunts BL5000’s eight-curve design, which, supposedly, makes the smartphone look like a sleek gem, not to mention that it makes the BL5000 easier to hold. In reality, the eight-curve design isn’t anything new nor revolutionary. It simply means that both the front and back sides are curved, just like you see on most smartphones these days.

Doogee should have focused more on the stunning 3D finish, which is available in three colors: Marine Blue, Midnight Black, and Maple Gold. The unique paint job gives the smartphone a captivating depth that attracts the eye and effectively hides fingerprints and smudges. It also makes the affordable mid-range smartphone look like an expensive, premium device.

The BL5000 measures 155.2 × 75.85 × 10.3 mm and weighs 210 grams. The above-average weight and thickness are caused by the presence of a 5050 mAh battery, which is what gives the smartphone its name. While noticeably thicker and heavier than most 5.5-inch smartphones, the BL5000 is still easily pocketable and reasonably elegant.

The charging cable and accessories connect to the smartphone via a regular microUSB port, and there’s also a dedicated 3.5mm audio jack for headphones. The BL5000 has two SIM card slots, one of which accepts TF cards for extra storage space.

Display

The Doogee BL5000 has a 5.5-inch display with 1920 × 1080 pixels. The display is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5 against scratches and shattering. Around the display are, by today’s standards, fairly thick bezels, but the display itself has a surprising number of tricks up its sleeve.

Typical smartphone display can go up to around 300 nits, which refers to the amount of light output equal to one candela per square meter. In other words, nits measure how much light the display sends to your eyes. A display with 300 nits can be used comfortably indoors, it might become unreadably under direct sunlight outside.

Well, the Doogee BL5000 has a 650-nit display. For comparison, the iPhone 7, a four-times-more-expensive smartphone, goes up to 625 nits. Combined with the large battery, the super-bright display makes the Doogee BL5000 a great choice for active people who spend long hours under the sun, far away from electric outlets.

Camera

The dual-camera setup on the back of the BL5000 includes two 13 MP sensors and a soft LED flash. The sensors have Phase Detection Auto Focus (PDAF), and Doogee uses them to create a believable bokeh effect. The rear camera also supports up to 2x optical zoom and up to 8x digital zoom. The front-facing camera has 8 MP and features an LED flash and a beauty mode. It captures 88-degree wide-angle photos, allowing you to take selfies with friends without a selfie stick.

The image quality of both the rear and the front camera is on par with other smartphones in the price range, and the second sensor is a welcome addition that allows you to unleash the creative photographer inside you without purchasing an expensive portrait lens and a DSLR camera.

Performance

Inside the Doogee BL5000 is an MTK6750T chipset from MediaTek with Mali-T860. In AnTuTu Benchmark v6, the chipset scored 41,852 points, whereas the Snapdragon 625, a comparable chipset from Qualcomm, scored 63,276 points. Despite more than 20,000 points of difference between the two chipsets, the real-world difference is subtle. Because the Doogee BL5000 has 4 GB of RAM, you can keep open multiple apps and browser tabs at the same time and switch between them without waiting. The presence of 64 GB of internal storage space and a slot for a memory card should suffice even the biggest data hoarders out there.

The highlight of the BL5000 is, of course, the 5050 mAh non-removable Li-Po battery. According to Doogee, the battery stores enough juice for up to 10 hours of gameplay, up to 15 hours of videos, and up to 28 hours of GPS navigation. Unlike other budget smartphones with large batteries, the BL5000 supports a true quick charging technology, which delivers 24 watts of power using the included 12 V/ 2 A charger. It takes just 10 minutes to charge the Doogee BL5000 to 40 percent, and 120 minutes to charge it to 100 percent.

Software

The Doogee BL5000 comes with Android OS v7.0 (Nougat) with Doogee UI slapped on top of it. Doogee UI was introduced with the release of Doogee Mix, a bezel-less smartphone with plenty of power and even more style. It’s no wonder then that the UI focuses on design and customization. With a few swipes and taps, you can make your Doogee BL5000 look how you want.

The good news is that Doogee UI goes a few steps beyond wallpapers and icon themes. It also introduces many handy shortcuts as well as a floating corner wheel with a toolbox for your favorite apps, among other things.

The operating system performs great, and all animations are fluent and without any noticeable lag. And if you find out that you don’t get along with the UI, you can always easily swap it for any launcher you want.

Verdict

We’ve found the Doogee BL5000 to be a likable budget smartphone with mid-range specs and a massive battery that can keep it running for multiple days. There are no real flaws to speak of—only compromises that are easily justified by the smartphone’s affordable price.
