Problem 1: Galaxy S6 blocks internet access of router to all connected devices after an update
After the Nougat update for my Galaxy S6 edge plus, wifi worked fine for about 2 weeks time and then the issue appears. When I connect my Galaxy S6 edge plus to a wifi router, the internet connection will be lost in that router which means not only the Galaxy S6 edge + can’t access Internet but all the devices which are connected to that wifi router can’t access Internet. I checked that issue with another wifi router and the same thing happens. But if I disconnect my Galaxy S6 edge+ from the wifi router, after few seconds the internet will work fine and other devices which are connected to the wifi router also can access Internet. One thing I found is that if connected to a very secured wifi Network (PEAP protected) this issue won’t happen. So this happens with normal wifi routers.
I cleared my cache memory of the phone, reset all the network settings but nothing worked for me. I did a factory reset once and wifi worked fine for about 2 weeks and then the issue came back. So I tried everything possible and none of them worked. This is a very serious issue which needs to be fixed because when the Galaxy S6 edge + is connected the wifi router, the internet connection of the wifi router won’t work which means all the devices ( eg:- laptops and PCs) which are connected to the same wifi router can’t access Internet. — Ransikerandeni
Solution: Hi Ransikerandeni. We haven’t heard of this issue happening on other S6s or any other devices so this may be an isolated case. You may be running a third party app that interferes with the router. Since the usual basic software troubleshooting does not appear to fix the issue, consider spending significant time in testing our theory by running the phone in safe mode for at least a few weeks. Better still, try wiping the phone via factory reset and connect it to the router for a few weeks straight. Make sure that you don’t install anything after a factory reset. This is the only way know if our suspicion has basis.
We assume of course that your device is not rooted and runs official firmware. If that’s not the case, you’ll have to bring everything back to stock and remove root, then do the suggested observation routine.
Problem 2: Galaxy S6 screen showing black spot after phone got dropped
Hi. I recently dropped my Galaxy S6. When I did a black spot showed up on the screen, it was quite large. Also, all the color was polluted with purple. The spot grew bigger so that I can’t see anything on my phone. It was in power saving mode so I couldn’t use my fingerprint to get into it. I can’t turn it off because of the touch screen being unresponsive. It will eventually die though so I can reboot it. — Will
Solution: Hi Will. You clearly have a broken screen. The purple discoloration is a sign that the LCD was shattered and that black spot means that that area has suffered too much pressure during the drop. There’s no software magic tricks to fix a broken screen. Contact Samsung or your carrier to have the screen repaired, or the phone replaced.
Problem 3: Galaxy S6 keeps searching for Android update after restarting
When booting up the phone searches for an Android update. Then the message is “Android update successful” and my phone freezes. Prior to that message, I am able to use the phone. I have tried a factory reset of the phone. I have also used ODIN to flash firmware. Not sure what to try at this point. Is there a way to stop the phone from updating? The only apps I have on phone are what comes on the phone after the factory reset. Thanks in advance for any help!! — Nancy
Solution: Hi Nancy. You can tell the phone to stop searching for an update by turning Download updates automatically option under Settings>Software update. If you don’t have the said option, then your carrier must have removed it. Since a factory reset did not fix your issue at all, you must tell your carrier about the problem. If they can’t fix it, they should replace your phone.
Problem 4: Galaxy S6 edge not turning on after it got dropped accidentally
Hi. My Samsung Galaxy S6 edge started to heat up and then died. Now it does not want to charge or turn on. I tried all the options like hard reset and to clear the cache but the phone does not even boot into any of those options. Before the phone did this, I did a factory reset so it was clean and two days later this happened. However The phone did fall about three weeks prior to this and the glass cracked but was working fine after the fall. — Herschelleresche
Solution: Hi Herschelleresche. Like water damage, unnecessary pressure or shock from an accidental drop can both have short- and long-term effects. If your phone does not turn on at all after trying all the hardware button combinations (steps provided below), you can assume there’s a bad hardware behind it. You need to submit the hardware to a thorough physical check so the extent of the damage is assessed. If you’re lucky and the issue is due to some disconnected solders only, like the one connecting the battery to the motherboard, a quick repair should resolve the issue.
For reference, below are the steps on how to boot the phone to alternate boot modes. You should try them if your device no longer turn on normally.
Boot in Recovery mode:
- Charge the phone for at least 30 minutes.
- Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key.
- When the Samsung Galaxy logo shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
- When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds.
- Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
- You can either wipe the cache partition or do a factory reset when in this mode.
Boot in Download Mode:
- Charge the phone for at least 30 minutes.
- Press and then hold the Home and Volume DOWN keys, then press and hold the Power key.
- When the Samsung Galaxy logo shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume DOWN keys.
- Wait until the Download screen appears.
- If you can boot the phone in download mode but not in other modes, that means that your only way out may be to flash a stock or custom firmware.
- Use Google to look for a guide on how to do it.
Boot in safe mode:
- Charge the phone for at least 30 minutes.
- Press and hold the Power button.
- Once the Samsung Galaxy logo appears, release the Power key and immediately press and hold the Volume Down button.
- Continue holding the button until the phone finishes rebooting.
- Once you see the text “Safe mode” at the bottom left corner of the screen, release the Volume Down button.
- The only difference of safe mode from normal mode is that the former prevents third party apps from running. If you can boot the phone in safe mode but not in normal mode, uninstall all apps until the issue (that prevents you from booting normally) is eliminated.
Problem 5: Galaxy S6 not turning on after charging
Hello. Last night, I plugged my dead phone in to charge overnight as I do most nights, and upon waking up this morning, the phone showed the 100% fully charged screen. I unplugged the phone and tried to turn it on, but it did not power up. The phone is now unresponsive, and will not show any screen when plugged in, and will not power up when holding the power button. The phone also does not respond to any combination of soft resets and factory resets (holding power, home, volume buttons in combination). I tested multiple chargers, and the chargers properly power my S7 I use for work, but nothing will make my personal S6 respond.
I’ve also tried cleaning the charging port with compressed air and then re-plugging the phone back in as suggested in the common fixes, but this too did not work. There is no water damage or physical damage to the phone. Additionally, there are no colored lights showing on the phone that would indicate that it is otherwise working. Please let me know if this is an issue that has been encountered by others, and what the solution to this issue was. — Casey
Solution: Hi Casey. There’s only so much that you can do when it comes to Android troubleshooting. Since you’ve already exhausted everything that you can do for this case, that means that bad hardware may be to blame. If you want to get to the bottom of this issue, let a professional check the hardware. In some cases, a bad power button can prevent a user from booting a device. In other cases, a more serious motherboard problem can lead to more serious repair. Whatever the case is, you won’t be able to know it unless a thorough diagnosis is done by a qualified technician. If the phone is still in warranty though, make sure to contact Samsung so their own technician can do the tests.
Problem 6: Galaxy S6 won’t charge, keeps saying to use original charger
I have a Samsung Galaxy S6 and use Straight Talk. My phone charger was recently stolen and I have bought 3 new chargers since then. All of which either slow my phone extremely slowly or won’t charge the phone at all. Recently a message popped up telling me to use the original charger which I do not have. What can I do to make my phone charge again? — Michael
Solution: Hi Michael. First of all, there’s a number of reasons why Samsung devices are supposed to be charged with Samsung or Samsung-recommended chargers only. Non-Samsung certified chargers means they’re not validated by Samsung. Even as ubiquitous as a charger needs a certain level of research in order to reliably work with a given device. Using a non-validated, non-Samsung charger can potentially lead to hardware or software issues. We know there are a lot of non-Samsung chargers that can charge phones properly but an equal number or more of them can be just as problematic. Another reason is the fact that non-Samsung chargers may shorten the life of Samsung batteries. Intelligent chargers are supposed to detect the remaining power in a battery so that a correct and optimal current can be pumped into it. Cheap chargers are not usually equipped with a detection system so they pump constant voltage or constant current to the battery until you unplug it. Letting your phone connect to this cheap charger can potentially overcharge the battery, causing it to degrade faster, or simply damage it in the short term. This is the usual reason why a lot of users encounter boot-related problems even though their phone was properly taken care of. Better, manufacturer-built chargers are designed to work with their own system (phone) so there’s an assurance that, in the least, there was enough research done to maximize the performance of the battery. Quality chargers are designed to provide moderate charge to the battery to achieve this goal and so far, Samsung has demonstrated over the years that the chargers that come with their own devices work properly.
Secondly, there’s a change that the problem here is not exactly the charger but the phone itself. In most cases wherein a Samsung device warns a user to use the original charger, the charging port is broken. Try to use at least one official Samsung charger to see if the message will stop. If it continues after using a known, working Samsung charger, try to recalibrate the battery. Here’s how:
- Use the phone by playing games or doing tasks to hasten power discharge, until the phone turns itself off.
- Charge the phone without turning it back on.
- Wait until the battery says it is fully charged to 100%.
- Wait for an hour before unplugging the phone from the charger.
- Use the phone until battery reaches 0% percent. The phone should turn off by itself.
- Recharge the phone to 100%, wait for an hour before unplugging it again.
- The battery should now be recalibrated. Observe how charging works.
If the issue persists, do a quick factory reset. Be sure to create a backup of your important files before doing this procedure.
- From the Home screen, tap the Apps
- Find and tap the Settings
- Under the ‘Personal’ section, find and tap Backup and reset.
- Tap Factory data reset.
- Touch Reset device to proceed with the reset.
- Depending on the security lock you used, enter the PIN or password.
- Tap Continue.
- Touch Delete all to confirm your action.
If all these procedures won’t fix the problem at all, send the phone in.
Problem 7: Galaxy S6 can’t power on, can’t recover files from Galaxy S6
Hello. I do not know if you could help me or not. I left my Samsung Galaxy S6 on charge after it had died. When it had reached 100% i took it off charged and tried to turn it on. i have had no luck. it will not turn on. i have already tried following your steps to reboot / reset. There is just no life in it. Does not light up or vibrate. Nothing. Just hoping you can help as i have a lot of photos which are not saved anywhere else or my baby girl what i will never get back. Solution: Hi Cody. You can’t access a phone’s internal storage device if it doesn’t power on, which means data recovery is not possible. If your phone won’t turn on after doing our suggestions from our other similar posts or our suggestions above, you’re out of luck. You must let a professional check the hardware so they can tell you it’s just a matter of a battery problem, or if it involves more serious solutions like a motherboard replacement. If they’ll say that the only way to fix this is a by changing the motherboard, you’ll be better off with a phone replacement. Both options of course will result to the same thing, data loss.
Problem 8: Galaxy S6 can’t read a SIM card after a failed SIM card replacement
I have a Samsung Galaxy S6 and the SIM card cannot be read. I have bought and replaced the SIM card holder component and now I’m at a loss for how to fix it. Any suggestions about how to fix this will be gratefully received. Thanks. — Susan
Solution: Hi Susan. Does the SIM work in another phone? If it does, then you’ve got yourself an issue with your phone. We don’t provide hardware troubleshooting and diagnostics though so try to find other websites that can give you more extensive tips. Alternatively, let someone with more experience handle the replacement of the SIM card slot.
Problem 9: Galaxy S6 won’t stay on unless connected to charger
Hello. My issue is my Galaxy S6 keeps restarting randomly. This issue has been getting more often now. The only thing is that it won’t restart when it’s plugged into a charger, only when it’s off a charger. — Steven
Solution: Hi Steven. We don’t think this is a software issue at all so you’ll most likely end up with either repair or replacement. One of the ultimate troubleshooting steps that you can do in this case though is a factory reset. Doing this will revert all software settings back to their known, working state and eliminate possible bugs from apps. If your phone continues to show the problem after a factory reset and when there are no apps installed, send it in.
- To factory reset your phone, follow these steps:
- Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge.
- Press and hold the Volume Up, Home and Power keys together.
- When the device powers on and displays ‘Power on logo’, release all keys and the Android icon will appear on the screen.
- Wait until the Android Recovery Screen appears after about 30 seconds.
- Using the Volume Down key, highlight the option, ‘wipe data/factory reset’ and press the Power key to select it.
- Press the Volume Down button again until the option ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted and then press the Power key to select it.
- After the reset is complete, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and hit the Power key to restart the phone.
Problem 10: Galaxy S6 turns on but screen remains black
