Galaxy Note 5 won’t send SMS, keeps saying “pending,” “authentication failed” error when using music apps, other issues

Problem 1: Galaxy Note 5 loses battery power fast

I have a Note 5 and noticed that when the battery is draining fast. i have it on light battery saving mode and when i use camera or flashlight it goes down a percent instantly and have 16h 57m 45s on battery and its at 28% but only had 2h 12m 5s screen on time. I turned off social apps, have GPS on save mode and wiped cache partition. I am about to get the battery replaced but i would hate to pay for it and it doesn’t fix it. The idle discharging time is fine after 12 hours it went from 73 to 63. — Damiand1923

Solution: Hi Damiand1923. Battery drain is one problem that usually have more than one possible causes so it’s really tricky to diagnose. The most effective way to zero in on the real cause is to spend some time and effort in addressing all possibilities until the issue is gone. Some of common reasons why a battery may act erratically includes (but are not limited) to the following:

  • too many apps installed
  • poorly coded app/s
  • bad battery
  • operating system glitch (coding-related)
  • unknown hardware malfunction
  • poor usage habits

We suggest that you try to recalibrate the battery as the first. This will force Android to adjust how it detects the actual battery levels. Sometimes, updates or installation of new apps can cause unanticipated issues with other apps or services resulting to your issue. If you haven’t tried it yet, here are the steps on how to recalibrate the battery:

  1. Use the phone by playing games or doing tasks to hasten power discharge, until the phone turns itself off.
  2. Turn the phone on again and let it turn itself off.
  3. Charge the phone without turning it back on.
  4. Wait until the battery says it fully charged to 100%
  5. Unplug the charger and turn the phone on.
  6. If the phone says it’s not 100% anymore, turn it off, plug the charger back in and wait until 100% charge is reached.
  7. Unplug the charger the turn the phone on again.
  8. Use the phone until you drain the battery down to 0.
  9. Repeat the cycle once.

Should nothing positive come out after calibrating the battery, don’t hesitate to do a factory reset. By doing that, you can check there’s a software issue causing the problem. With all software settings set to their defaults, your device should be able to manage the battery properly again.

  1. Create a backup of your important files such as photos, videos, contacts etc. You can use Smart Switch for this task.
  2. Turn off your Samsung Galaxy Note 5 completely.
  3. Press and hold the Volume Up and the Home buttons first, and then press and hold the Power key.
  4. Keep the three buttons pressed and when ‘Samsung Galaxy Note5’ shows, release the Power key but continue holding the other two.
  5. Once the Android logo shows, release both the Volume Up and Home buttons.
  6. The notice ‘Installing system update’ will show on the screen for 30 to 60 seconds before the Android system recovery screen is shown with its options.
  7. Use the Volume Down key to highlight the option ‘Yes — delete all user data’ and press the Power key to select it.
  8. When the process is complete, use the Volume Down key to highlight the option ‘Reboot system now’ and hit the Power key to restart the phone.
  9. The reboot may take a little longer to complete but don’t worry and wait for the device to become active.
  10. Observe how battery consumption works for 24-48 without installing any third party apps.

Both of the procedures above are meant to address issues with the software and to some extent, with apps. If the problem returns even during the observation period, go ahead with battery replacement or repair.

Problem 2: Galaxy Note 5 charging problems after Nougat update

Battery problem started right after a system update one or two months ago. Here’s the problem: Before update: Normal charging maximum to 2.5 hours. Fast charging: to 1.15 hours. Cellphone was working perfect as a clock. After update: Normal charging: 5 to 7.5 hours (non sense at all). Plus, every time it gets interrupted in the middle, it stops charging when 60% or 70% (around). Fast charging: it seems the same timing above, around 1.15 hours, but seems like generates more heat. — Albert.kazazi

Solution: Hi Albert.kazazi. Make sure that you wipe the cache partition first. This will force the phone to delete the current cache and replace it with a new one. At times, installations of apps and updates can corrupt the system cache, which in turn, can result to problems. If you haven’t done it yet, here are the steps:

  1. Turn off your Samsung Galaxy Note 5 completely.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up and the Home buttons first, and then press and hold the Power key.
  3. Keep the three buttons pressed and when ‘Samsung Galaxy Note5’ shows, release the Power key but continue holding the other two.
  4. Once the Android logo shows, release both the Volume Up and Home buttons.
  5. The notice ‘Installing system update’ will show on the screen for 30 to 60 seconds before the Android system recovery screen is shown with its options.
  6. Use the Volume Down key to highlight the option ‘wipe cache partition’ and press the Power key to select it.

You want to factory reset the device if the problems remain after wiping the cache partition.

Problem 3: Galaxy Note 5 won’t unlock screen at random

My Galaxy Note 5 occasionally won’t unlock. After I hit the unlock button or home button the screen will come on for a second or 2 and then black out. It sometimes allows me to get as far as my home screen before going black. The only way to get it working is to keep unlocking it and immediately holding the unlock button to pull up the power off/ restart screen. If I’m quick enough to restart it it works fine afterward. It’s sometimes easy to do and others goes out so quickly I can’t restart it until several dozen attempts. I’m worried it won’t work when I really need it to. Any tips on how to fix it? — Robyn

Solution: Hi Robyn. To know if this is a software issue, you must do a factory reset and observe how unlocking works for a day. As mentioned above, you have to make sure that you don’t re-install apps right after a factory reset. If the problem continues even with the device already factory reset, there must be a hardware problem behind it. It’s also possible that the issue lies with the power button so you should have the phone checked or replaced.

Problem 4: Galaxy Note 5 stuck in boot loop

My husband’s Galaxy Note 5 is doing the loop boot thing. I have soft restarted it a few different times, with extended hold times each time. It hasn’t worked. My phone did this a few weeks back and soft reboot fixed it. Please tell me this can be fixed. It is a 2nd hand phone with straight talk service. So no way to go and have it replaced. And can not afford a new one. He has had it for a year. Thank you. — Leslie

Solution: Hi Leslie. Boot loop issue usually happens after a failed update or software modification. In some rare cases, it can also be caused by hardware malfunction. We suggest that you flash the bootloader to stock version first. If that won’t fix the boot loop issue, you should consider repair or replacement.

Below are the sample steps on how to flash a bootloader. The exact steps may vary depending on your phone model so make sure you do extra research about the subject. Keep in mind that flashing is basically a modification of core system files. If not done properly, you can permanently brick the phone. You also need a PC to do this procedure.

Problem 5: Galaxy Note 5 keeps sending SMS saying SIM was recently changed

Recently had my SIM replaced. They didn’t complete the install well. Now every time I restart my system a notification gets blasted to my contacts saying my SIM card was recently changed. Sender: SIM change alert NJ SimChip removed IMEI: 353877075307367 And I get the following Free Message: Unable to send message – Message Blocking is active. I believe that they did not complete all the settings . Urgent help. — Nosh

Solution: Hi Nosh. There’s nothing third party support teams like us can do about this problem. You must work with your carrier to fix it. Only agents with access to your account can deal with this issue. Based on the error messages above, it appears that your account may not be properly configured on their end. Make sure that you give them all the error messages you’re getting when using network services to help them identify easily where the problem lies.

Problem 6: Galaxy Note 5 has persistent “new message” notification

I have a Note 5, basically stock. This is my first phone that I didn’t root and customize. After an over-the-air update, messaging would only give ‘new message’ notifications. In the settings for messaging, the box for preview message under notifications in settings is checked. Unchecking the box tales away the check, but it is back the next time I enter settings-notifications. Same thing happens in safe mode. I have done a soft reset (no battery for a minute) with no changes. Before the update (long before) I started using Knox for a short time which took away the option for no lock screen. I didn’t remove Knox until after the on air update. I have the option of no lock screen again, but messaging still only shows ‘new message’ in the status bar or lock screen. Is my only alternative a factory reset? — Ken

Solution: Hi Ken. Try a cache partition wipe first (steps provided above). If that won’t fix the bug, consider deleting the messaging app’s cache and data by doing the following:

  1. Open the Settings menu either through your notification shade (drop-down) or through the Settings app in your app drawer.
  2. Navigate down to “Apps”. This may be renamed to something like Applications or Application Manager in OEM skinned versions of Android 6 or 7.
  3. Once in there, click on an application.
  4. You’ll now see a list of stuff that gives you information about the app, including Storage, Permissions, Memory Use, and more. These are all clickable items. You’ll want to click on Storage.
  5. You should now clearly see the Clear Cache and Clear Data buttons for the application.

If these two procedures won’t help, yes, your only alternative may be a factory reset.

Problem 7: Galaxy Note 5 showing “authentication failed” error when using music apps

I’ve been having this problem with my phone, Samsung Galaxy Note 5 where I use certain music streaming apps and my wifi connection kicks off and on. Until finally kicks off with it “still connected” but I receive an error where it says “authentication failed.” The music apps where the problem happens with are: Google Play music, Spotify, and Pandora to name a few. The apps it works with are: TIDAL and iHeartRadio. I’ve tried all sorts of troubleshooting; called up MetroPCS and everything they had me do, I already tried so… If you can offer me a better solution… Ffs… Please!!! — Andrew

Solution: Hi Andrew. We know that most of the apps you’re having a problem with are third party but we still recommend that the first step that you want to do is to observe the phone in safe mode. This will allow you to check if the issue continues when using Google Play Music app. We assume that since you’re getting the same error when using Google Play Music, Spotify, and Pandora, the test result with Play Music should also be the same for the rest.

Basically, we want to check if a third party app is causing the erratic behavior of your wifi connection. Safe mode blocks third party apps and services so if Play Music app will work normally while in safe mode, that’ll be a confirmation of our hunch. To identify which of the third party apps is causing the problem, you must uninstall apps one by one, making sure to observe the phone after every uninstall.

To boot to safe mode, follow these steps:

  1. Turn off the phone completely.
  2. Press and hold the Power key.
  3. Once ‘Samsung Galaxy Note5’ shows, release the Power key and immediately press and hold the Volume Down button.
  4. The phone will restart but keep the Vol Down button pressed.
  5. Once the phone has finished restarting, ‘Safe mode’ will be display in the lower-left corner of the screen.
  6. You may now release the Volume Down button.
  7. Turn the phone back on and check if Google Play Music app works as expected.

If the issue continues even when the phone is in safe mode, do a factory reset.

Problem 8: Galaxy Note 5 won’t boot up normally after installing an update

Hello DroidGuy. I am in trouble !!! I have a Galaxy Note 5 (China, ChinaUniCom carrier). I am sorry but I am not sure what Android was on before the update – but I think it was Android 5. The phone one day got the download for Android 6 from my carrier. I did keep it on my phone but only (tried to) update it yesterday. (I had about 3GB free space, the downloaded files were on the phone). The update went through, the phone restarted several times (as far as I can say) and it also updated all applications (that part I saw and I think this was also finalized). Then the phone did another restart (or maybe still several actions and more restarts – I left it unattended for maybe 15 minutes). When I took the phone again the display was black.

Also when pressing the ‘On’-button it stayed black. When pressing the ‘Home’-button or touching the ‘Return’- and ‘Task’-area beside the home button nothing happens. Only when pressing ‘On’ for a long time the pop-up for ‘switch off’, ‘restart’, ‘flight mode’ and ’emergency mode’ came up. After that pop-up I see the regular background colors but no apps, no whatsoever, appears on the ‘desktop.’

Restart, Switch off and on, taking the battery out for more than 30 seconds doesn’t change anything. I then went into recovery mode and wiped the cache partition – also with no positive outcome. Can you tell me what I can do ? (I would like to avoid the factory reset if possible). Thank you very much for the very appreciated support Regards from China, Robert Faj

P.S.: When the phone is off and unplugged and I connect the charger the display shows the battery sign with 0%. When I (during display of 0%) reconnect the charger it shows 90% (or more – depending on the current status).

Also when switched off and connected to the charger and I press the home button it shows the current charging state (so the home button is properly working !) – During the update process the phone was continuously connected to a charger. — Robert Faj

Solution: Hi Robert Faj. It’s hard to tell what occurred exactly during the update that resulted to this issue but if installing an update was the only thing you did differently prior to this problem, then something must have corrupted the bootloader. To check,  you want to flash the bootloader back to stock via flashing. This requires more advanced steps and a computer so make sure that you find a good guide. We can give you sample steps on how to flash the bootloader but the exact steps may vary depending on your phone model.

  1. Look for the correct firmware for your phone model and download it. Make sure that you select the right one. It should be the same exact firmware that ran previously on your device. We assume that you list down the firmware version somewhere. If you did not take note of it before, there’s a chance that you may pick the wrong one. As you may know now, using an incorrect firmware can cause complications so good luck with that.
  2. Let’s now say that you have identified the correct firmware. You then want to download it to your computer. The firmware file should have a bunch of files in it like AP_, BL_, CSC_, etc.
  3. Look for the file that starts with a label BL; this should be the corresponding bootloader file for this firmware. Once you’ve identified the bootloader file, copy it to your computer’s desktop or to any other folder that you can easily access.
  4. Proceed with the rest of the flashing procedure using the Odin program.
  5. In Odin, click on the BL tab and make sure to use the bootloader file you’ve identified earlier.
  6. Now, make sure that the “Device Added” status and its “ID:COM box” has turned blue before hitting the START button. This will initiate the flashing of your phone’s bootloader.
  7. Restart the phone once the procedure is finished.

Problem 9: Galaxy Note 5 keeps showing no signal reception, no sound when pressing Volume buttons, keeps rebooting on its own

Several issues with my Galaxy Note 5. When I turn on the phone, there are no signal bars at the top. If I dial a number and select Call, the icon turns to End Call for a second and then fades out. When I check for a signal with my old phone, there is a good signal. Although I have sound and volume for the ear speaker and loud speaker, when I press the volumes keys, the volume bar moves on the screen but there is no button sound for the volume level. Sometimes, when I select Settings, the ON/OFF option buttons are all off and the screen is locked. I cannot scroll down the Settings screen. But if I slide down the notification screen twice, a screen shows the options and the ones that should be on are now on. Today I noticed that the phone rebooted three or four times on its own. I’ve gone through several Customer Service sessions with both Sprint but no solutions. — David

Solution: Hi David. Make sure that you do a factory reset first so you can compare how your phone works when all software settings are set to their defaults. Also, you want to check phone performance when there are no apps installed so factory reset is a perfect first step for you. If everything you mentioned here continue to occur after a factory reset when there are no apps installed, the problem must be hardware specific. In that case, you’ll want to have the phone repaired or replaced.

Problem 10: Galaxy Note 5 won’t send SMS, keeps saying “pending”

When sending a text message to a contact… message doesn’t go, remains “pending” for over 24 hours – even though I traveled 80 miles with the phone. Message only was sent after I noticed it – rebooted the phone and pressed the send button repeatedly the next day.

I had sent a text successfully a few hours earlier the first day to the same contact. This happened to two messages sent to two different contacts from a hospital. Pending persisted after leaving building. I know this happens when out of signal range, but to remained pending for 24 hours? I rebooted phone and messages no longer say pending so I presume they were sent. I was able to receive text messages from vendors (Amazon) about deliveries throughout. — Linda

Solution: Hi Linda. There must be a bug that prevented your text messages from being processed and sent properly. If that happens again, the first thing that you want to do is to simply restart the device. If that won’t help, you can then wipe the messaging app’s cache. If that won’t work either, delete the messaging app’s data. Deleting app’s data means restoring the application settings to its defaults, wiping all your messages in the process. If you have important text messages, be sure to back them up via Smart Switch before deleting the messaging app’s data.
