When we talk about thermostats, it’s imperative that you get the best out there. Given the kind of competition we have in the industry today, we have a handful of devices out in the wild which gives users the best experience they can expect. Most thermostats are smart now, which means they can learn from your usage patterns and adjust accordingly. They also gauge the weather outside your home to give you the optimum results when it comes to home temperature.

Even though there’s nothing wrong with your current thermostat, it always makes sense to get one of these smart thermostats to make your life a whole lot easier. These can be controlled directly via your smartphone (Android or iOS), which makes it even better. Not to mention the fact that they help you save money regularly given that the heating/cooling is based on your usage patterns. Lastly, setting up a thermostat is pretty easy and can be done by most people. If you find yourself at a loss to hook up your new thermostat, you can always find a professional to make your life easy. We’re going to talk about two thermostats today – the Nest Smart Thermostat and the Ecobee thermostat.
Ecobee 4 vs Nest Smart Thermostat comparison
One of the most popular WiFi based thermostats around, the Nest Smart Thermostat is almost immediately the first product that comes to mind when we think about home automation systems. Although this particular unit only controls the temperature of your home, Nest has been an incredibly popular name in the industry. Although the company is going through turmoil right now, it is no doubt one of the best WiFi-based smart thermostats you can get in the industry. It features an old-school thermostat look, complete with a rotating wheel and everything. It barely takes a few minutes to set up, which cannot be said about most thermostats out there. The Nest is also compatible with a handful of voice assistants out there, including the Amazon Echo, which means you can simply ask Alexa to turn down or turn up the heating, and Nest will happily oblige. Nest will automatically send alerts to your phone if there’s something you need to know about the cooling system. Anything from a faulty HVAC system or if you simply need to change some filters, Nest has you covered here. This is a newer model which means it has a slightly bigger and better display on board for improved visibility.
Pros and Cons
The Nest comes with an intelligent smart feature that makes it capable of learning on the go. So after a week or two of operation, Nest will automatically adjust the cooling/heating of your home based on the temperatures you’ve set over a week or 10 days. Naturally, the thermostat is also capable of detecting if you’re home or away and will change the temperature accordingly to save you big money on energy costs. Thanks to the sensors on board, the Nest can detect when you’ve entered the room where it’s attached and will light up beautifully. Considering how your thermostat controls most of your energy, it’s imperative that you use a product which is smart, potentially letting you cut down 20-30% of your energy costs. A feature called Nest Leaf lets you know when you’re at a setting which can save energy. This will motivate users to use the feature on a regular basis. To get a better idea on whether or if you’ve saved energy, you can check the Energy History page on Nest. The company proudly mentions that this is the first thermostat to get an Energy Star. The best part is that customers can fix multiple Nest Thermostats around their homes to get more control over the temperature of their homes.
While the Nest Thermostat is compatible with Amazon Alexa, it strangely misses out on Apple HomeKit compatibility. This could be due to the fact that Nest is now owned by Google. Or perhaps Google is in the process or bringing HomeKit support to the Nest Thermostat. Because Google is not going to shy away from offering its premium products to rival ecosystems (take Google Maps, example). It also lacks something like a remote sensor (available on the Ecobee 4) to track your movement in any desired room of the house. While this doesn’t make Nest less of a thermostat, it would have certainly been the icing on the cake. The device only comes with a 2-year limited warranty, which is a bit of a disappointment considering what the contemporaries offer.
The Nest Thermostat is currently available via Amazon for $195, which is fairly decent considering the fact that this is one of the most popular thermostats going around right now. 87% of all the people who have bought Nest on Amazon have given it a 5-star rating, which speaks volumes about the performance of this particular product. Quality was never in doubt since this product was launched under Google’s wing. Although Nest makes a lot of products, its thermostats are probably what they will be known for going forward. Taking all these factors into account, we suggest you give the Nest Thermostat a closer look.
By most accounts, the Ecobee 4 is considered to be second only to the Nest. This is because it comes with most of the same features but in a slightly different package. The Ecobee 4 comes with a sensor that can detect which room you’re in and spread the air accordingly. However, customers will be required to buy additional sensors online (one comes with the packaging). This means that customers who simply get the product will not be able to benefit from this feature. This can be very beneficial if you aren’t around the manual thermostat controls at all times. You can access additional home automation options using the IFTTT channel. The Ecobee 4 comes with three years of warranty, which is the company’s way of letting you know that the product is as robust as it looks.
Pros and Cons
The Ecobee 4 is compatible with the Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit, thus adding a wide range of devices to its repertoire. Alexa compatibility means it can respond to your voice commands throughout the house. This feature alone could seal the deal for most customers given how popular Amazon’s Alexa powered devices are in the market. The Home/Away feature on this particular thermostat ensures the customers that they don’t see lengthy electricity bills when they’re not at home. Just in case you forgot to shut down the cooling when you leave, the Ecobee 4 will automatically understand that the user is not home and shut down the system accordingly. While the Nest has a conventional rotating ring to adjust the temperature, the Ecobee 4 uses a proper touchscreen to guide users efficiently. Although some users and experts have complained that the touchscreen isn’t the best out there, the fact that the manufacturer offers something like this by default is surely commendable. Naturally, the Ecobee 4 comes with an Android app letting you control the thermostat from your smartphone. It is a free download and can be grabbed from the Google Play Store right away.
However, no smart thermostat is without its flaws. The Ecobee 4 comes with a mightily impressive hardware underneath but lacks the learning feature, which means that it will only offer the temperature that you set on the device. There have been complaints about the setting up process before you’re good to go. You will require a C Wire to hook it up to your HVAC system. But if you don’t have one, the company’s Power Extender Kit that is offered by default will come in handy. The catch here, however, is that the users are required to plug in the extender directly to the controller board of the HVAC system. In most cases, this procedure will probably require a professional.
The Ecobee 4 is priced at $228 from Amazon. It is a mightily attractive product to buy and makes a lot of sense to spend your money on. However, we don’t think the kind of features it offers justifies the $228 price tag here. Sure there are quite a lot of attractive features here, but that doesn’t necessarily make it the best product. If you are considering this over the Nest, however, you will be pleased to know that the device has a rating of 4+ stars on Amazon right now, with reviews speaking highly about the performance of the product. Based on this metric alone, the Ecobee 4 is definitely worth a shot.
While both products are fairly good in their own right, the fact that the Nest Thermostat comes with a better set of features and also the fact that it’s significantly easier to setup makes it the preferred choice for many. But we also have to consider the fact that the Ecobee 4 is an exceptional offering at the kind of price that is quoted by the seller and gives the Nest a decent run for its money. To be honest, customers can’t go wrong with either product. So if the pricing is a concern, it makes a great deal of sense to go with the Nest.
