How to fix your Samsung Galaxy S8 that won’t turn on [Troubleshooting Guide]

It’s really frustrating if the brand new #Samsung Galaxy #S8 you just bought won’t turn on out of the box. Some of our readers contacted us about this problem and while it may seem like a serious problem, there’s always a possibility it’s just something you can fix. After all, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen this problem. In fact, when Galaxy S7 (and S7 Edge) was released last year, we also received similar complaints from some of our readers.

In this post, I will walk you through in doing some safe troubleshooting procedures you can do prior to bringing the phone back to the store and having it replaced should it still fail to turn on. Don’t worry, we don’t suggest things that can potentially mess the phone up; we simply want you to try to do things that might help turn the phone on normally.

Troubleshooting Samsung Galaxy S8 that won’t turn on

The purpose of this troubleshooting guide is for us to know right away if your new Galaxy S8 device is still capable of turning on and functioning normally. Usually, stores have a 7-day grace period to replace defective without no questions ask that’s why we need to make sure right away that your phone is good.

Normally, manufacturers lightly charge the battery of new devices so they can immediately be setup out of the box but there are always cases wherein you really have to charge the phone before you can use it. We’ve already encountered situations before wherein the phone, during its first boot, crashed and could no longer continue turning on. It’s a firmware issue and it can be fixed easily. So, in this guide, we will try to rule out one possibility after another so that we will know if there’s something we can do about the phone or you really have to bring it back and have it replaced.

Go through the steps below to learn how to troubleshoot your brand new Samsung Galaxy S8 that’s not turning on…

Step 1: Do the forced reboot / soft reset procedure

This must be the first thing you should do; it’s easy and safe. This will rule out the possibility that the phone’s firmware crashed or the problem was caused by any minor system-related issues. It’s equivalent to the battery pull procedure that we often did to phones with removable battery. The Galaxy S8 doesn’t have a user-removable battery so Samsung deviced a combo to do the simulated battery disconnect.

To do this, press and hold both the Volume Down and Power keys together for 7 to 10 seconds. Assuming the problem was indeed just a minor firmware issue, the device should start up normally. Of course, continue your observation until you’re satisfied the phone is working perfectly because if you encounter hiccups even after the phone turned on, do not hesitate to have the phone replaced. You don’t want to deal with any sort of problems with a brand new, premium smartphone.

Step 2: Charge the phone to know if it responds when plugged in

Now, let’s rule out the possibility that the battery hasn’t been charged a bit before packing by charging the phone. Use the original charge that came with the main unit. Leave the phone plugged in for at least five minutes and then check if the charging icon shows on the screen and that the LED indicator at the top of the display lights up. If both charging signs show, then attempt to turn the phone on after  a few minutes of charging. It should turn on normally.

However, if none of those signs show, it means the phone isn’t charging. At this point, don’t do anything anymore, except bring the phone back to the store and have it replaced. A brand new (and very expensive) phone should turn on and charge out of the box. If it doesn’t, it’s defective.

In the event that the phone shows those charging signs and you can actually see the battery indicator going up in percentage and the phone still refuses to turn on, you may proceed with the next steps.

Step 3: Attempt to boot your Samsung Galaxy S8 in Safe mode

All we have to do is bring the phone to life so you can use it and while we don’t know for sure what’s preventing it from turning, we need to try to do things that may help it boot up. So, in this step, try to see if it can boot up in safe mode by following these steps:

  1. Turn the device off.
  2. Press and hold the Power key past the model name screen.
  3. When “SAMSUNG” appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  4. Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  5. Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  6. Safe mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.
  7. Release the Volume down key when you see Safe Mode.
  8. Uninstall apps that are causing a problem.

If the phone still won’t boot up in this mode, then move on to the next step.

Step 4: Try to boot your phone in Recovery mode

It is useless to wipe the cache partition or reset a brand new phone but what we want you to do is to try to see if the phone can power up its hardware and successfully boot in one of the modes. If successful, then we know that the phone’s hardware is fine. However, if it also won’t boot in recovery mode, then it’s safe to assume you’ve got a lemon and you need to send it back and have it replaced. But this is how you boot your phone in recovery mode:

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).

After all these steps and your brand new Galaxy S8 is still not turning on or booting up, then you have no other choice but to bring it back to the store where you bought it and request a replacement. You should do that before the grace period expires.

  1. Thank you!! Woke up to a phone that didn’t respond, nothing. Wouldn’t show charging when I plugged it in or anything (I knew battery wasn’t dead). I tried the forced reset and it worked! Now I just need to know why it did that in the first place! I’ve had it less than a month!! Grrrr

  4. Thanks! Plugged perfectly functioning S8 in to charge overnight. Awoke to unresponsive black screen and a glowing green light in the upper left corner. Did #1 Forced reboot/Soft reset. Came back right away and seems to be just fine. Is this one of those things that will remain a mystery, or is this symptomatic of something specific?

  6. Thanks. But none of the solutions worked for me. Recovery mode does not work. Safe Mode neither. I even dont have the screen with Samsung logo. Only Download mode works, and when I flash the stock ROM, Odin says PASS, but the phone won’t boot. Please help me.

  14. My S8+ went out, blank screen, all of sudden. It was idled all night and still have a 56% charge. It went out and couldn’t be powered back on with the power button. Step 1 made it back on again, but I noticed that the phone is getting warm/hot. My old S4 and S5 used to get hot before they went kaput, but at least I had used them for a couple of years before problem arose. Thus far my S8+ has been in service for only 3 months. If this S8+ fails me prematurely, I would consider iPhone next time.

  16. I am on my second S8, and I have the same problem with it that I had with the first one. True, I can get it to turn back on by doing the soft reset, but you shouldn’t have to do that, especially not for a brand new phone. I live alone and need a reliable phone, and I don’t have time to do a soft reset if there’s an emergency. Sometimes it does it while I’m in the middle of a call. It also drops calls and get staticy. I had no problems with my S6 and I’m really disappointed. My kids both have one and they haven’t had any problems as of yet,
    but I need my phone to work. If something isn’t done about this I will not be buying any more Samsung phones, and I’m telling everyone I know to beware!

  17. Step 1 did it for me. I knew damn well it was an OS bug that simply crashed the phone, but I had no way of battery pulling until I learned about it here. Awesome stuff.

  20. I am now on my 3rd S8. Sounds crazy for a phone that was released on 4/21/2017 so literally ONE MONTH ago. I’ve been able to restore each of the replacements from a Samsung automatic back up so I am not loosing too much information, but since it puts the same apps and info on the new phone, it would be helpful to know which apps could be causing the problem so I know not to keep using them. I know there are thousands and thousands of apps out there, but has anyone reported what apps they have installed or recall installing right before the crash happens. Looking for common denominators I guess.

  21. none of the answers given was the reason i am looking for help. i said “my phone is not turning off” and the first answer to the problem is “turn it off”
    last might i put my cel to charge, i noticed a raimbow color appeared and i had to be turning my phone off, i was going to unplug it when finished charging but i fall sleep. now it won´t turn off at all! nothing said before is helping. i had the J5 and never experience this

  23. Step one worked! My phone is about 3 weeks old, and had stopped turning on once it got to the Verizon screen. It stayed on that screen and just kept loading and loading and loading, and this Step 1 turned it off. I then pressed and held the power button, and it started normally

  24. Step 1 worked for me, but now with every hiccup I will be wondering…….. Does anyone know if Samsung has come out with a statement. Obviously there is an issue.

  27. Same thing happened to mine yesterday. Not even 15 days old. The soft reset worked. Done it again today. Soft reset worked . Should I replace it even though the reset makes it come back on? This shouldn’t be an issue 15 days in and I don’t want to keep it thinking it’s fine and then 6 months from now be garbage

  28. This worked for me too. My S8+ is about 20 days old. I wasn’t even using it, it was sitting on the table, and a few minutes prior, I had just looked at the screen to see what time it was, it was working just fine. I came back to find it dead. Wouldn’t turn on, wouldn’t show anything when I plugged it in. Step 1 worked for me!

  29. My Samsung Galaxys8 is one week old. It does not turn on after 7-8 seconds (nor in 20 or 30 seconds either). It had a 40% charge this morning, I haven’t used it all day.
    I think its a lemon.
