How to turn on / off your Samsung Galaxy S8+ Wi-Fi connection

How to setup APN & data settings

To set the Access Point Name (APN) and turn on data settings, follow these steps:

  1. From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
  2. Tap Settings > Connections.
  3. Tap Mobile networks.
  4. Tap Access Point Names.
  5. If available, tap the T-Mobile US LTE (the bullet point fills with green). If not available, tap the ADD.
  6. To reset your APN settings, tap the Menu (3 dots) icon and then tap Reset to default.
  7. Verify and update the following settings for the Data APN:
    • Name: Name of your carrier
    • APN: this field is carrier-specific
    • Proxy: <Not set>
    • Port: <Not set>
    • Username: <Not set>
    • Password: <Not set>
    • Server: <Not set>
    • MMSC: this field is carrier-specific
    • MMS proxy: <Not set>
    • MMS port: <Not set>
    • MMS protocol: WAP 2.0
    • MCC: 310
    • MNC: 260
    • Authentication type:<Not set>
    • APN type: <Not set> OR Internet+MMS
    • APN protocol: IPv4/IPv6
    • APN roaming protocol: IPv4
    • Enable/disable APN: <greyed out unless there are multiple APN’s>
    • Bearer: Unspecified
  8. Tap Menu (3 dots) icon > Save.
  9. Tap the desired APN profile you want to use. The bullet point fills with green next to the APN profile.

Manual network selection

The device detects and registers on wireless networks inside your provider’s calling area, but roaming networks are usually restricted to your provider’s SIM cards. You can manually select a network only in areas where your service provider or carrier does not own GSM spectrum.

  1. From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
  2. Tap Settings > Connections.
  3. Tap Mobile networks.
  4. Tap Network operators.
  5. Tap Search now.

How to switch between 2G and 4G

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Tap Settings > Connections.
  3. Tap Mobile networks.
  4. Tap Network mode.
  5. Tap one of the following desired band settings:
    • LTE/4G/3G/2G (auto connect)
    • 4G/3G/2G (auto connect)
    • 2G ONLY

How to turn on / off airplane mode

Airplane mode turns off wireless connections. This allows app and menu use, but prevents voice or Internet use.

How to set up mobile hotspot on your Galaxy S8+

Step 1: Check that Wi-Fi and Smartphone Mobile Hotspot are turned off. Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot settings cannot be changed when Wi-Fi sharing is turned on.

Step 2: From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.

Step 3: Tap Settings > Connections.

Step 4: Tap Mobile HotSpot and Tethering.

Step 5: Tap Mobile HotSpot.

Step 6: Move the slider to the ON position and then tap on the Mobile Hotspot words to access the setup menu and complete the following steps:

  1. Create a Wi-Fi password
    1. Tap the Password field.
    2. Enter the password (passwords must be at least eight characters).
    3. Tap Save.
  2. 3 dot icon > Allowed devices.       
    1. ADD
    2. Allowed devices only (ON/OFF)
  3. 3 dot icon >  Configure Mobile Hotspot > adjust the following:     
    1. Network name     
    2. Broadcast network name (SSID) (ON/OFF)
    3. Security             
      1. Open
      2. WPA2 PSK
    4. Password
    5. Show advanced options             
      1. Broadcast channel                     
        • Use 5 GHz band when available
      2. Maximum connections                     
        • Select from 1 to 8
      3. Timeout settings                     
        • Never timeout
        • 5 minutes
        • 10 minutes
        • 20 minutes
        • 30 minutes
        • 60 minutes

Step 7: Once finished adjusting settings, tap SAVE.

Step 8: Tap the Mobile HotSpot Switch to turn on.

Step 9: If desired, tap OK to read the First Time Use details or tap Cancel to proceed.

Step 10: The Mobile HotSpot Switch slides right and turns green.

How to turn on / off Samsung Galaxy S8+ USB tethering, install computer drivers if necessary

Aside from the mobile hotspot, you can also share your connection to your desktop or laptop computers through USB tethering wherein the phone should be physically connected to the computer using the data cable and this is how you do it…

  1. From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
  2. Tap Settings > Connections.
  3. Tap Mobile HotSpot and Tethering.
  4. Connect your phone to your computer via USB cable. For best results, use the cable that came with the phone.
  5. To share your connection, move the switch for the USB tethering to ON.
  6. Tap OK if you would like to learn more about tethering.
  7. Once connected, Tethered appears under USB tethering and the check box is selected.

Computer drivers

And just in case your computer can’t detect or recognize your new S8+, here’s what you need to do…

  1. Download and install Samsung Smart Switch that is compatible with your computer from https://www.samsung.com/us/support/smart-switch-support/#!/.
  2. Connect the cable to a compatible USB port on your computer.
  3. Connect the other end of the cable to your mobile device.
  4. Allow your computer to install any required drivers for your device. This process may take a few minutes.

How to reset network settings on your Samsung Galaxy S8+

Resetting network settings resets all data connections back to the out of the box factory defaults. The following changes will occur by performing a Reset of network settings.

  1. Stored Wi-Fi networks will be deleted.
  2. Paired Bluetooth devices will be deleted.
  3. Background data sync settings will be turned on.
  4. Data restrictive settings in applications that were manually turned on/off by the customer will be reset to the default setting.
  5. Network selection mode will be set to automatic.

The following device connections status will default to when the device was being powered on for the first time.

  • Airplane mode: OFF
  • Bluetooth: OFF
  • Data roaming: OFF
  • Mobile hotspot: OFF
  • VPN: OFF
  • Mobile data: ON
  • Wi-Fi: OFF

To perform a Network reset, follow these steps.

  1. From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
  2. Tap General Management > Reset > Reset network settings.
  3. Tap Reset settings.
  4. If you have set up a PIN, enter it.
  5. Tap Reset settings. Once complete a confirmation window will appear.
