Hello. My S6 Edge has given up on me. It is completely unresponsive to any form of soft reset combinations and is not showing any signs of receiving charge (light, vibrations) besides getting a little warm. On the last day it worked; it seemed fine. At the end of the day I plugged it into the supplied fast charger to charge overnight. At this point the phone was switched on and had about 20% charge remaining. On the morning I checked the phone and noticed it had turned itself off and the display was black except for an image of a battery in the centre and a blinking green dot below it. The image was showing that it had only charged to 48% overnight. I knew something wasn’t right so I unplugged the phone and tried to turn it on. No response. I then tried the other soft reset button presses I have had to use before but to no avail. In the last few days I have plugged it in for a little while and tried again in the hope that it would spark to life.
A little history about the phone: Started a 24-month contract in September 2015, about 2 months in the fast charge failed and the phone was sent away to fix it. Since then I would endure bootloops that would last a day with me having to perform numerous soft resets. Usually the bootloops would kick off during night-time while I was asleep and the phone was plugged in. It took a while to stop it from looping and during these periods the battery charge would plummet dramatically. Recently, I had to perform a “battery pull” (power + vol down) to get it working again.
I have never been able to pinpoint why it happens and in between the lapses the phone ran perfectly. I have tried the fast charger on another device and it seems fine. I use the fast charger for the majority of the charging, although not exclusively, as I sometimes use my in-car charger. I would be very grateful if you can draw on your expertise to narrow down what this could be (I’m thinking battery-related hardware)and I also welcome any fix you can suggest.
My main concern is that my phone died while I was away on holiday so I have some precious data on it that I wish not to lose. I did not take the time to perform a backup. Hypothetically speaking, will replacing the battery myself cause and loss of data? Technically I could send it away to be fixed under warranty but I don’t want to have a technician perform a wipe on the phone because I really need the data stored on the device.

Solution: Hi Ben. We appreciate your effort in giving us relevant information and history about your device. Not a lot of people who seeks answers from us are not as generous when it comes to giving pertinent details about their problems so we thank you investing time and effort.
Based on your problem description, there’s highly likely that the problem lies on the battery. Although we can’t know for sure what happened during repair, the current behavior of your phone seems to suggest that there’s power- or boot-related issue at hand. We’ve noticed similar symptoms for a bad power IC in the past though so it can also be that.
The most that you can do when it comes to fixing possible (though we don’t think that’s the case) software issue includes factory reset and manual flashing of bootloader. We don’t think flashing stock firmware will make any difference but you can try it if you can manage to turn the phone back on.
Your main goal of course is on how to boot the phone back up. The thing is, we don’t think you can do that yourself. As mentioned above, the causes of the issue can vary and they all require hardware diagnostics, which only a trained technician can do. Even if it’s just a battery problem, you still need to send it in as the battery pack is integrated to the logic board. You don’t want to have poorly-done weld on the contact point between the battery and the motherboard. That same is true if the issue lies on the power IC. Totally different set of problems can develop if repair or part replacement is not done improperly.
In order not to lose data during repair, you should avoid sending the device to Samsung. You can instead ask help from your local service center so you can tell a technician to leave the Nand chip untouched. If you’re lucky and the problem is only on the battery, replacing this part can easily fix the issue.
Replacing the battery yourself will not result to data loss unless you damage the Nand chip during or after the process. If you are 100% sure and confident that you can manage the replacement, then go ahead. We don’t provide hardware troubleshooting and guides for replacing components though so you must find a reliable one using Google.
My Galaxy S6 does not connect to any mobile data network at all. it started when i noticed my phone suddenly appeared in a black screen. i did experience that before so what i did was that i turned it on to a “safe mode” and restarted it. but after that i could no longer connect to mobile internet data/network. i also tried another SIM card/internet SIM inserted in my phone hoping that my SIM card was the one causing the dysfunction. but it still could not connect to network data. i tried wiping cache partition but also did not work. my last resort was to do factory reset but after that it was still a fail. what else could i possibly do? do i need to get my phone checked in a service center? — Chenee
Solution: Hi Chenee. If factory reset did not fix the problem, that’s proof that the issue is not software-related at all. The phone’s mobile data capability may not be working due to a damaged antenna or other hardware component failure.
Sometimes, updates can fix network problems, especially if there’s a new baseband version component to them. Since you can’t obviously check if there’s a pending OTA update at this time, you should use Samsung Smart Switch to do it. Simply install the app to both your S6 and PC and connect them via USB cable. If there’s an available update for your device, Smart Switch should prompt you to install it.
If there’s no update, you should send the phone for repair or replacement.
So my phone was at 17% and I had put it on a charger it’s never been on before. I was still playing on it and it charged a whole 3% and then my screen glitched and went black. For a while, nothing happened. I kept it on the charger and soon enough the light blue LED light was flashing at the top.
Then, whenever I removed the charger or tried turning the phone on, the light went away. Well after trying some of your methods, the volume buttons started making sound and the little buttons on either side of the home key would light up every time I touched the screen, but the screen stayed black. Then I started receiving texts and when I had a friend try to call me, it went straight to voicemail. I never got the call. I’ve had this phone for almost two years and I’ve never had a problem like this with it. Also, when the phone shut off, I took the case off because I noticed that the back was pretty warm, so I thought my phone had shut off from overheating. I never got a warning that the phone needed to cool down, and I wasn’t on it for very long before it did what it did. I could really use some help, thanks. — Qgirl98
Solution: Hi Qgirl98. If you haven’t noticed, almost all of our suggestions for boot- or power-related problems are basic software solutions only. That’s because most of Android problems under this category are due to bad hardware. A lot of times, the first hardware component to go bad is the charging port. Plugging and unplugging of the charger can cause wear and tear that often results to problems faster than anticipated. If a user is not careful, he or she can even damage the part relatively easily. Battery-related problems are also some of the common problems for older Androids simply because Lithium-based batteries degrades even when not in use. The more you discharge and recharge it, the faster that degradation becomes and sometimes, users aren’t simply realizing the fact that their phone’s batteries have simply reached their end-of-life.
The general rule is to do relevant software troubleshooting and to consider repair or replacement if nothing works. If you’ve already tried the basics like wiping the cache partition, booting to safe mode, and factory reset, then you can assume that there’s a hardware malfunction causing the problem. The fact that your phone appears to be overheating is yet another indication of a possible hardware error. Make sure that you do the basic software troubleshooting first, then have the phone repaired or replaced if the problem continues.
Below are the steps on how to do the applicable software troubleshooting in this case.
How to restart an S6 to safe mode
- Press and hold the Volume Down and Power keys for 20 to 30 seconds.
- Once you see the Samsung logo, release the Power key immediately but continue pressing the Volume Down key.
- Your phone should continue booting up and you will be prompted to unlock your phone as usual.
- You will know if the phone successfully booted in safe mode if the text “Safe mode” is displayed at the lower-left corner of the screen.
How to wipe the cache partition of a Galaxy S6
- Turn off the device.
- Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up key, Home key, and Power key.
- When the phone vibrates, release the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key.
- When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.
- Press the Volume Down key to highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
- Press the Power key to select.
- When the wipe cache partition is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
- Press the Power key to restart the device.
How to perform Master Reset on Galaxy S6
- Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge.
- Press and hold the Volume Up, Home and Power keys together.
- When the device powers on and displays ‘Power on logo’, release all keys and the Android icon will appear on the screen.
- Wait until the Android Recovery Screen appears after about 30 seconds.
- Using the Volume Down key, highlight the option, ‘wipe data/factory reset’ and press the Power key to select it.
- Press the Volume Down button again until the option ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted and then press the Power key to select it.
- After the reset is complete, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and hit the Power key to restart the phone.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S6 and I use Chomp SMS as my text messaging app and for some reason I don’t receive all text messages sent to me. I can send texts without any problems but people with various phones (iPhone, HTC) have told me they sent me texts and I didn’t get them. I have done a soft reset, contacted Chomp SMS (who says it’s a network issue) and took the phone to a Sprint store (nothing wrong as texts they sent the phone came through and changed the SIM card) and the issue still isn’t fixed.
I am at my wit’s end and don’t know what else to do. I have researched and tried all tips suggested but still don’t get all my texts. If you could provide some other suggestions to solve this problem I would appreciate it.
I also have an issue where when I am on the phone the phone fades in and out where I can’t hear the person talking for a few seconds or so. Again, I’ve taken the phone to Sprint to get fixed, they’ve cleaned the speaker and the problem still exists. Any help would be appreciated as I’m ready to throw this phone out the window. — Ellen
Solution: Hi Ellen. There’s no direct way to fix an issue like this. The best thing that you can do in this case is hope that you can narrow down the possible factors and eventually pinpoint the true cause. Frankly, there’s nothing much that a third party support team like us can do to help you. This domain must be addressed by your carrier because a majority of the moving parts in this case concerns them. The only suggestion that we can give you includes phone troubleshooting steps. Bear in mind though that phone troubleshooting won’t be able to fix things if they are network- or account-related. This is why the primary support should come from your carrier’s technical department team.
Phone troubleshooting in this case consists of the following:
- using a different messaging app and observing how SMS works for a few days
- updating relevant network information on the phone (details must be provided by your carrier)
- wiping the cache partition
- restarting the phone to safe mode (you should use the stock messaging app) and observing how SMS works for a few days
- factory reset
If there’s no improvement in the situation after doing these things, you can bet the problems are network related. You must work closely with your carrier on how to fix it. Repair or replacement won’t help you either as the cause is on the quality of service and not on the device.
Good morning The Droid Guy. I have serious issues with my Galaxy S6 Edge. Yesterday when I woke up, I noticed it would startup until the first screen (the one that says Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Powered by Android). I already tried Emergency recovery with Smart Switch, and installing the latest version of stock ROM with Odin, but nothing works. I am also unable to boot into recovery, I have the stock recovery. Nothing worked. Something also very weird, is that the screen has horizontal black lines. I’m unable to boot into anything but download mode. BTW: The device is not rooted or anything. — Lhndz94
Solution: Hi Lhndz94. Try to reflash the bootloader and see if it will solve the problem. Below are the general steps on how to do it. Exact steps may vary so be sure to find the correct steps on how to do it on your phone first. The steps below should only be used as reference to give you an idea on what to do in a general sense. The exact way to do it on your phone model may be slightly different that the ones provided here:
- Look for the correct firmware for your phone model and download it. Make sure that select the right one. It should be the same exact firmware that ran previously on your device. We assume that you list down the firmware version somewhere. If you did not take note of it before, there’s a chance that you may pick the wrong one. As you may know now, using an incorrect firmware can cause complications so good luck with that.
- Let’s now say that you have identified the correct firmware. You then want to download it to your computer. The firmware file should have a bunch of files in it like AP_, BL_, CSC_, etc.
- Look for the file that starts with a label BL; this should be the corresponding bootloader file for this firmware. Once you’ve identified the bootloader file, copy it to your computer’s desktop or to any other folder that you can easily access.
- Proceed with the rest of the flashing procedure using the Odin program.
- In Odin, click on the BL tab and make sure to use the bootloader file you’ve identified earlier.
- Now, make sure that the “Device Added” status and its “ID:COM box” has turned blue before hitting the START button. This will initiate the flashing of your phone’s bootloader.
- Restart the phone once the procedure is finished.
Hi. Last night my phone was working as normal. I put it on charge when I went to bed using a charging pad. When I woke up this morning, the LED light was flashing indicating that I had notifications but when I went to press the Home button to enter password my screen didn’t turn on. I have tried shutting it down by holding the power button but still no response. I am unable to tell you what Android Version as I can’t get into my phone. I have tried using different charging cables but still no response. I’m not sure if you can help but I’m currently at work and can’t get to a service centre. — Marina
Solution: Hi Marina. Try to do a soft reset first and see if that will restart the phone. Here’s how:
- Press and hold the Power and Volume down buttons for 12 seconds.
- Use the Volume down button to scroll to the Power Down option.
- Press the Home key to select.
We don’t know what happened to your phone but if soft reset procedure fails to restart the phone, your main task at this time is to try to see if you can boot it up to other modes so you can do follow up troubleshooting. Below are the steps on what you need to do:
Boot in Recovery mode:
- Charge the phone for at least 30 minutes.
- Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key.
- When the Samsung Galaxy S7 shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
- When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds.
- Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
- You can either wipe the cache partition or do a factory reset when in this mode.
Boot in Download Mode:
- Charge the phone for at least 30 minutes.
- Press and then hold the Home and Volume DOWN keys, then press and hold the Power key.
- When the Samsung Galaxy S7 shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume DOWN keys.
- Wait until the Download screen appears.
- If you can boot the phone in download mode but not in other modes, that means that your only way out may be to flash a stock or custom firmware.
- Use Google to look for a guide on how to do it.
Boot in safe mode:
- Charge the phone for at least 30 minutes.
- Press and hold the Power button.
- Once the ‘Samsung Galaxy S7’ logo appears, release the Power key and immediately press and hold the Volume Down button.
- Continue holding the button until the phone finishes rebooting.
- Once you see the text “Safe mode” at the bottom left corner of the screen, release the Volume Down button.
- The only difference of safe mode from normal mode is that the former prevents third party apps from running. If you can boot the phone in safe mode but not in normal mode, uninstall all apps until the issue (that prevents you from booting normally) is eliminated.
My phone and car are not properly connecting when it worked fine previously. When I start up the car, the bluetooth sign appears on my dash screen but doesn’t say ‘connection complete,’ so I switch my phone bluetooth off and back on to achieve that. That done connection still not right. I hit my connection button on my steering wheel and speak the number I want, it will find the number and dial it but won’t connect to speaker so the call stays on my phone. Doing it the other way I used to be able to dial the number on my phone and it would go to my car speaker but now it won’t. So in short it is still connecting but can’t get hands free speaker to connect/work anymore. My car is Hyundai ix35. My network is Three. Hope you can help. Regards. — Laura
Solution: Hi Laura. Not all bluetooth devices are using the same standard or protocol so it’s highly likely that the main problem is due to incompatibility. This usually happens after one of the connected devices install an update, making older connection setup suddenly out-of-sync. There may be a device-specific solution to the problem but we can’t tell you what it is because we don’t have enough information to work with. You should contact your car maker or the manufacturer of the bluetooth car system for more assistance. Sometimes, a simple software update can fix bluetooth incompatibility issues while in some cases, sync problems will never be resolved at all.
To troubleshoot the issue on your end, you first want to delete the old bluetooth pairing from both devices so you can try to pair them again. This often resolves bluetooth connectivity issues as well so make sure not to skip it.
If nothing changes after you’ve wiped the old pairing, the next thing that you can do is to refresh both devices so they run clean firmware. This means that you factory reset both the phone and your car’s bluetooth system. If you are not sure how to factory reset your car’s bluetooth system, contact your car dealer, or do a search online.
Once both devices have been factory reset, try to pair them again. If this won’t work either, have your car’s bluetooth system updated.
