How to block / unblock calls on Samsung Galaxy S8

Each of us has his own reason why we need to block some numbers or someone from calling or texting us. I think this is a very important feature anyone should use to make sure numbers from we people we consider “spammers” can’t take up much of our time. In this section, I will walk you through in blocking calls from your Galaxy S8.

TIP: To block any incoming call that is not added to the reject list, touch the red Phone icon and drag it to the left. To block the call but provide a message, touch Reject call with message and drag up.

Now, here’s how you block a certain number from calling yours…

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Phone icon.
  2. Tap 3 dots > Settings.
  3. Tap Block numbers and choose from the following:
    1. To enter the number manually:
      1. Enter the number.
      2. If desired, choose a Match criteria option:
        • Exactly the same as (default)
        • Starts with
        • Ends with
        • Includes
    2. To search for the number:
      1. Tap the Contacts icon.
      2. Tap Recents or Contacts.
      3. Tap the number to reject or contact to add to the reject list.
    3. To block unknown callers, move the slide under Block unknown callers to ON

Now, to unblock numbers you previously blocked, follow these steps…

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Phone icon.
  2. Tap 3 dots > Settings.
  3. Tap Block numbers.
  4. Tap the minus sign next to the contact name or number to remove from the list.

How to make use of Samsung Galaxy S8 Call Forwarding feature

There are two types of call forwarding you can enjoy; there’s the Call Forwarding Unconditional (CFU), which immediately forwards all calls to another phone number without allowing the device to ring and Call Forwarding Conditional (CFC), which forwards incoming calls to another phone number if you do not or cannot answer them (no reply, busy, unavailable).

Galaxy S8 Call Forwarding Unconditional

  1. From any Home screen, tap Phone.
  2. Tap 3 dots > Settings.
  3. Tap More settings.
  4. Tap Call forwarding.
  5. Tap Always forward.
  6. Enter the phone number to forward your calls to.
  7. Tap TURN ON.

Galaxy S8 Call Forwarding Conditional

  1. From any Home screen, tap Phone.
  2. Tap 3 dots > Settings.
  3. Tap More settings.
  4. Tap Call forwarding.
  5. Tap the desired option:
    • Forward when busy
    • Forward when unanswered
    • Forward when unreachable
  6. Enter the phone number to forward your calls to.
  7. Tap TURN ON.

Depending on your carrier or service provider, your phone is set to have a default voicemail number. If you change this number, calls for the desired option will no longer forward to voicemail.

If you want to cancel call forwarding, this is how you do it:

  1. From any Home screen, tap Phone.
  2. Tap 3 dots > Settings.
  3. Tap More settings.
  4. Tap Call forwarding.
  5. Tap Always forward.
  6. Tap Turn off.

Caller ID settings in Samsung Galaxy S8

The caller identification basically consists of the phone number and the designated name but not all service providers allow their subscribers to enjoy this feature for free. Some offer this feature for a monthly fee so the steps on how to setup caller ID on your Galaxy S8 may not work.

  1. From any Home screen, tap Phone.
  2. Tap 3 dots > Settings.
  3. Tap More settings.
  4. Tap Show my caller ID and select one of the following options:
    • Network default
    • Hide number
    • Show number

How to reset call log on your Galaxy S8

Every phone has this wherein all calls are logged and arranged chronologically based on date and time they happened. While the log doesn’t actually cause any issues with your phone, for privacy sake it’s better you reset it from time to time especially if you have calls you don’t want anybody to know and here’s how you do it:

  1. From any Home screen, tap the green Phone icon.
  2. Tap the Recents tab.
  3. Tap 3 dots > Delete.
  4. Select the individual logs you want to delete or place a check in the ALL option.
  5. Tap DELETE.

To view the call log, this is how you do it:

  1. From any Home screen, tap the green Phone icon.
  2. Tap the Recents tab to view the call logs.
  3. Tap any call listed to see more details about that number.

I hope that these tutorials will be able to help you master your device.

  1. Also, when you want to block a call from the “recent’ calls area, click on the number, hit the “i” (Details) circle, then, in the upper right (next to SHARE) hit the 3 dots and select “Block Number.” You will be asked to verify that you want to block, click “Block” again, and the number will be blocked.

I used to be able to do this by simply holding my finger on the number and selecting the option of “Add to reject list,” but that doesn’t appear to exist anymore.

  2. I receive a TON of spam calls from numbers with the same area code and exchange. According to the directions noted above. I should be able under the Phone app, Tap 3 dots > Settings.
Tap Block numbers and choose from the following:
    To enter the number manually:
    Enter the number.
If desired, choose a Match criteria option:
    Exactly the same as (default)
    Starts with
    Ends with
    Includes
I can enter a number manually but I can’t figure out how to get to the 2nd part where I could have it block number that start with the particular area code and exchange. I have an S8+. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  3. This reply is for “Ralph” who commented on April 27, 2017.

This is why people should not comment unless they know what they are talking about. You said Mr. Hisona, who wrote this article, was all wrong and gave incorrect information. You further said he should do his research before giving advice. In fact Ralph, YOU are all wrong in criticizing this article. I have an S8+ and I followed the directions given in the article. Voila! my offending caller was instantly blocked, and my phone correctly said I would not be receiving calls from this caller.

Then I read further down and ran across your comment. I thought, okay, let’s try it Ralphie’s way. Guess what happened? When I tried to block the caller using your method, my phone gave only one option: it asked if I wanted to UNBLOCK this offending number, clearly indicating that the number was already blocked using Mr. Hisona’s advice and instructions. Eat an egg Ralphie.

  4. When i click on number to block the only choice is to delete. If i click on 3 dots before go to block calls i have to enter the number manually

  5. (S8) I would love blocking ALL callers/numbers that are NOT stored as contacts….this USED to be able to be done….Any suggestions?

  6. I’m having an issue with my Caller ID app also. I need to make a very important phone call and I cannot make the call. Please help

  7. I have the same problem as Rodney Even, the ‘Caller ID keeps stopping’ tap on X twice and it goes back to home screen, can’t call or receive phone calls.

  8. I keep getting a “caller id has stopped working ” twice and then closes. Can’t make any calls!!!

  9. When I tap Phone on my Samsung 8, a message that says “Caller ID keep stopping” twice and then it closes completely. I cannot dial any numbers or anything. Please advise.

  10. this doesn’t make a lot of sense, it doesn’t block anything, the caller will go to your voice mail, blocking a call, means the call would be shut down, I am using the Samsung s8 plus, and I am with Verizon

  11. There is no “call forwarding” option under “more settings” on my S8+! I am discovering that it doesn’t quite work with Google Voice, which I’ve used for years on HTC and other phones. …Grrr…

  12. I want to block calls only from a contact but not their text messages…..how do I set that up on my s8 device?

  13. This is all bad info on blocking a number.
    1. Under recent calls, click the number you wish to block. Select the details icon. THEN click the 3 dots. Finally, click block number.

  14. Where did the option go to add a number in recents to the auto reject list??? You expect me to write down or remember the number to: rom the Home screen, tap the Phone icon.
    Tap 3 dots > Settings.
Tap Block numbers and choose from the following:
    To enter the number manually:
    Enter the number.
If desired, choose a Match criteria option:
    Exactly the same as (default)
    Starts with
    Ends with
    Includes

  15. your information to block call on the galaxy is incorrect you did not do your research.
    1. Go to the 3 dots
    2. Tap settings then tap Block numbers under call setting
