Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus keeps showing “Warning: Camera failed” error [Troubleshooting Guide]

The error “Warning: Camera failed” is one of the two most common camera-related problems many #Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ (#S6EdgePlus) owners encountered. The other one is “Unfortunately, Camera has stopped” and between these two, the former is more complex as based on reports from our readers, it may be a hardware problem; meaning, the camera sensor might have some issues. The latter, however, is more of an app-related issue and while it might have been caused by other apps, at least, you know that it’s the Camera app that’s crashing.

In this post, I will tackle the “Camera failed” error as it seems like we’ve gotten a lot of complaints from our readers. The Galaxy S6 Edge+ units have recently received minor updates as a preparation for the upcoming roll out of the Android Nougat update. We have a reason to believe that some of the cases reported to us might have been due to updates; maybe some caches or data got corrupted during the process. Read on as I will show you what to do when this happens.

Troubleshooting Galaxy S6 Edge+ that pops up “Warning: Camera failed” error

The camera is probably the feature that’s often used by the owners especially if the output has really good quality like what the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus offers. But aside from that, in the background, there are also a lot of things that happen when you take some photos or record videos.

For instance, when you launch the Camera app, the sensor and the services running in the background also initializes and all these things happen in split second. When you finally hit the capture button, the sensor will register the image and all other services will work the way the should and the Camera app will call on the Gallery to manage the image. If one of them failed to do the task, an error may occur and the one we’re tackling here is just one of them.

Let’s now try to troubleshoot your phone but just before that, here’s one of the complaints we received from our readers that best describes this problem…

Problem: Hi guys! How are you doing? I have a problem with my phone that’s preventing me from using the camera. My device is an S6 Edge+ which I’ve been using for several months now and the error that’s preventing me from using the camera is “Warning: Camera failed.” This shows up every time I open the camera of my phone to take some pictures or record videos. I don’t understand why this happens in the first place and I don’t even know what to do to get rid of this error to be able to use my phone like before again. So, if you guys can help me out, that would be great. Thanks a lot!

Troubleshooting: In troubleshooting this problem, it’s imperative that we try to rule out each possibility starting from the easiest ones to a more complex troubleshooting procedure. That being said, here’s what you have to do to try to fix this problem…

Step 1: Reboot your phone a couple of times

This will rule out the possibility that the problem is caused by a glitch in the firmware or hardware. Glitches happen all the time and while they may seem like serious issues, they’re often not. In fact, all it takes is a reboot to fix a glitch, so try to reboot your phone and if that won’t work, try to reboot one more time. Of course, if the problem remains, then move on to the next step as the problem might be more than just a glitch.

Step 2: Clear the cache and data of the Camera app

The rule of thumb is to reset the app that’s explicitly mentioned in the error and in this case, it’s the Camera. This problem can also be a result of a misconfiguration that’s why it’s imperative you reset it first before you move on to the next step. Don’t worry though as none of your pictures will be deleted. Here’s how you reset the camera app…

  1. From any Home screen, tap Apps.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Scroll to ‘APPLICATIONS,’ then tap Application manager.
  4. Swipe right to the ALL screen.
  5. Scroll to and tap Camera.
  6. Tap Clear cache.
  7. Tap Clear data button, then OK.

There are also times that this error message shows up when you try to view pictures using Gallery or Photos so depending on which app triggers it, clear its cache and data just like what you did with the Camera.

Step 3: Isolate the problem by booting your phone up in Safe mode

After clearing the cache and data of the Camera app and the error still occurs, it’s time to find out if your third-party apps have something to do with it. Reboot your phone in safe mode to temporarily disable all third-party apps. The reason is that when the error is triggered by one or some of your downloaded apps, then it shouldn’t show up when in this mode and you may be able to use your camera without being greeted by the error. This is how you start your phone up in safe mode…

  1. Press and hold the Volume Down and Power keys for 20 to 30 seconds.
  2. Once you see the Samsung logo, release the Power key immediately but continue pressing the Volume Down key.
  3. Your phone should continue booting up and you will be prompted to unlock your phone as usual.
  4. You will know if the phone successfully booted in safe mode if the text “Safe mode” is displayed at the lower-left corner of the screen.

While in this mode, try to trigger the error once more and if it does show up, then you have to move on to the next step, otherwise, you need to find the third-party app that’s causing the problem. When the error doesn’t show up in safe mode, it’s obvious that one of the apps you downloaded is causing the problem, so you need to find that app and then reset it and if that doesn’t work, you need to uninstall it.

  1. From any Home screen, tap Apps.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Scroll to ‘APPLICATIONS,’ then tap Application manager.
  4. Swipe right to the ALL screen.
  5. Scroll to and tap suspected app.
  6. Tap Clear cache.
  7. Tap Clear data button, then OK.

To uninstall, follow the same steps but hit uninstall.

Step 4: Delete the system caches so they’ll be replaced

System caches get corrupted more often than you think and when it happens, performance-related issues may occur with some apps crashing. While this error may mean that it’s the sensor that stopped working, we still have to rule out the possibility that it crashed due to a corrupt cache.

You don’t have access to the caches that’s why you need to wipe off the entire contents of the directory where all caches are saved and this is how you do it:

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up key, Home key, and Power key.
  3. When the phone vibrates, release the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key.
  4. When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.
  5. Press the Volume Down key to highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  6. Press the Power key to select.
  7. When the wipe cache partition is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  8. Press the Power key to restart the device.

The reboot may be longer than usual but wait for the phone to become active before doing anything. Once the phone has successfully rebooted, try to trigger the error again by opening the camera and if it still shows up, you have no other choice but to do the next step.

Step 5: Reset your Galaxy S6 Edge+ to bring it back to default settings

This is your last resort in ruling out the possibility that your phone is suffering from a serious firmware issue that’s why the error is showing up. After doing this and the error still shows up, you need to have to send it to a tech and have it checked. But before you actually reset your phone, make sure you backup every personal file and data you have that you don’t want to lose. This is how you reset your phone:

  1. Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up, Home and Power keys together.
  3. When the device powers on and displays ‘Power on logo’, release all keys and the Android icon will appear on the screen.
  4. Wait until the Android Recovery Screen appears after about 30 seconds.
  5. Using the Volume Down key, highlight the option, ‘wipe data/factory reset’ and press the Power key to select it.
  6. Press the Vol Down button again until the option ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted and then press the Power key to select it.
  7. After the reset is complete, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and hit the Power key to restart the phone.
